Was bored today and it had been a while since Blue has gotten to stretch her legs, so I warmed her up and did the nickel test. Out of 6 tries, 3 were about 3-5 seconds, 2 were about 8-10, and 1 was about 16 secs. I think my garage floor needs leveling.

Try using a brand new shiny nickel with a nice crisp edge, they work best.
Different places on the plenum give different results. I found that toward the back of the plenum and just off to one side the nickel would just stand there and just look at you.
My best time was about 1.5 minutes.

I wondered about that, thanks for the tip Tom...I kept trying to stand the .05 up right in the middle of the plenum, I'll have to try towards the back next time.

Cow tipping is reserved for Friday's, on Saturday nights I go in the back yard and try to pee the ZR-1 logo in the snow until the #@!% crap is gone.

As mentioned in the book "Heart of the Beast":

At a press demonstration, Terry Stinson, the LT5 project engineer at Mercury Marine, balanced a nickel on its edge on the engine plenum in a completed ..

A nickel will balance on the plenum of a well tuned, good running LT5 engine.

Only 30-60 seconds which is short compared to some posted results.

Hey Steve!
There was a nickel standing on the plenum when I purchased my car this summer. I've driven it about 2500 miles since then. Just looked last night and it's still standing.=D>

68,000 miles. 2021 nickel on the map sensor plate. At idle 3 seconds. 2,000 plus rpm 30 seconds. Unbelievable how the nickel rotates on its axis. Just replaced coils, wires, plugs, crank sensor. Injectors a year ago. Checked and pulled fuel pumps for inspection. Quasar is just now broken in. Smooooth. Did someone mention NCM ?touring ? laps? I am ready.

Yeah, who has nickels lying around anymore? Now you will have to get a Bitcoin and see if it will stay balanced. BTW, I remember going to Bloomington Gold in 1993 and watched a GM guy do the nickel balance thing on a new ZR-1. It stayed up a long time and was very impressive. Made me want to get a ZR-1--which I did the next year. --Bob

Pete phased my cams and Ami's Z also has his cams. Neither will stand a nickel for very long! :)
