Can anyone ID whatever kind of spray-on detail gunk was used on my car? It is black and rubbery and scrapes off with my fingernail. It also scrubs off with a Scotchbrite no-scratch pad and some distilled water - it seems to dissolve when scrubbed with H2O.

The car got a light buff at the detail shop after the fender was painted. They took the liberty of spraying the wheel wells and inner fender liners with an aerosol spray that made them black and shiny. I've seen this stuff used before and it is hateful. As mentioned, it is water soluble with a little abrasion, so you can imagine how bad everything looks after driving to Bowling Green and back through hard rain for many hours.

I've been cleaning a couple of hours each night; here's a half-and half look at the hood after three nights:

It's come a long way from where it started. Here's how the inner fender looked after driving back from Bowling Green in hours of rain:

Edit: not sure what is up with the pics, the two that I rotated went all small. Sorry.

Looks like a silicon based shine. as dirt and dust gets to it it accumulates and almost looks like oil underspray.

Appreciate the responses. I've come to believe it is probably paint (!!) and will post a pic showing why. I've been using acetone to strip it off plastic but have had some everyday life setbacks that are slowing the cleanup. Not about to give up though.

Wow ! Possibly a rubber undercoating like Bedliner that they used ? Didn't expect that !

Ha, it was very dismaying. Whatever it is, it'll scrape off flat surfaces in sheets and might be Plasti-Dip after all. It has for sure made my job harder and more time consuming.

Don't look like a detail spray looks like some kind of rubberised undercoating.

Put the LF on a jack stand tonight and cleaned the wheel well and suspension. Acetone to strip whatever this mess is followed by Superclean Degreaser and soft brushes to take off the dirt and accumulated road film underneath. Will be dodging weather the next 5-6 days, it looks like, but work continues.

Take it back and have them clean it off, you did not ask for it to be done.
