Hey guys, CRS has hit me and I need some help. Somewhere on the forum someone posted the part number for the antenna mast assy and the grommet. I think is was from Mid America but not sure. My problem is I still hear the motor but antenna not moving. Should I just replace whole assy? Wanted to get grommet just in case. Thanks guys. Btw, 1990.

Grommet for ZR-1 is different from non-ZR-1 C4 vettes. To make sure you do not damage the grommet, I would remove the antenna assembly from the car, replace mast and reinstall. When you remove the antenna bracket to the body, antenna drops down.

Doing mine right now. Got the antenna mast from TheAntennaSource.com although I got from their eBay ad. $30. Nice people been in business a long time. I was on the phone with them for tech help just today. The antenna mast is easily removed from the top without removing the whole assembly. Just grab it as someone else turns the radio on and pull it out, cable and all. As long as the cable you remove is the same length as the replacement (nothing broke off inside) the new one is fed in when someone turns the radio off. If broken you do have to go in and fish out the pieces. Problem I ran into was that the base of the replacement was larger than the original. It would not go in. With their help over the phone we figured out that I had a replacement assembly from a 91 or later. Go figure. They are exchanging the mast for me.

Btw if you do order, order from eBay or call in the order, their website is under construction and not working well.
Good luck,
H

Hey Mike! Let me get my transmission back from Bill Boudreaux and installed and then bring your '90 over and we can get it done on the lift. I did one in my '93 LT-1 years ago. Not too bad..

Hey thanks Steve, I'll take you up on that. I was going to have my mechanics do it but nervous about that as they know nothing about these things. I still have to find the parts. When I turn key on I still hear motor running, so it may just be antenna mast. Do you think I should just replace whole assy? Btw if you need any help with tranny when u get it back, just call me. Glad to help.

Mike,

if the motor is running just buy the mast. I need to rebuild mine (I have a spare) but the running motor is a good sign

Agree with Jeff to buy the mast inly to start.. trans should be back in a couple of weeks. Went back to Dual Mass FW. Finishing that install before the transmission gets here.

I know they were tough to find a couple of years ago when I needed one. I imagine that they're about nonexistent now. The good news is I bought two. I used one and sent my other one to a forum member so he could get them made. I'll have to send him a message and see if he's still interested. If not maybe he can send it to Jerry. Hopefully we can get them remade one way or another.

If the motor is running that tells me the mast is broken and the thing needs to come apart. One person can install the mast with the antenna housing in the car but it's a bit tricky. And also, nobody mentioned that there is a nut at the top of the housing that needs to come off in order to get the new mast in the housing and this nut takes a special socket to get it off,it usually comes with a new mast. Also,an antenna from a 93-96 will work in an earlier car but the wiring needs to be switched around. Early has external relay later has internal relay.

Mike,

If you can wait until I get my '91 off the lift we can easily pull the assembly from you '90 and put it on the bench to diagnose..

Not funny. Relative location of antenna on standard vette vs. ZR-1 is different. Top of grommet for ZR-1 is near perpendicular to the vertical neck. Standard vette grommet is at an angle relative to vertical neck. Gurantee you that standard grommet will not work on our Zs.

You are correct. The standard grommet is angled slightly back about 33 Degrees. The ZR-1 Grommet is vertical as is the mast.

I used the standard and ground it flat, so its almost good enough but not really, because it is also smaller in diameter. But if you do this it will at least protect the antenna and not stick up above the fender.

The are ABSOLUTELY NOT the same part.

Ok, does the antenna come out of quarter panel or bumper?
It has been so long since my Z had an antenna that I don't remember!
I have my stock bumper some where.

Quarter panel and it's easier with the rear wheel off
