Doing a little trunk freshen up on my car, and I had thought the rear shade clips could use a little optimization.

Pulled the old ones out and drew up a version that captures the shade better. Printed using a blend of PLA plastic with 30% carbon fiber.

Works great, and should last a while!

Picture below of the old and the new.

Good morning Paul,
What is the point?
3D printing has been used for over twenty years for prototyping parts.
These parts already exist; would this not be patent infringement?

I don't think they exist with reinforced carbon fiber for add rigidity. As you can see in the pics the ones he replaced are cracked at one of the screw attachment points. The only replacement available are only plastic as well. So build a better mousetrap.....

So well done OP hopefully these last a while. Other them making them out of metal or billet adding a little strengthening material to them hopefully will have the desired end result.

Cool still would not work in my car; the roll-bar is in the way.

Carbon Fiber breaks easily.
Carbon Kevlar is much stronger.

What do test engineers know anyway. The "Point" is john its stronger than plastic alone.

Patent infringement? Maybe if he sold a boat load but who is going to squeal?

I know!
In the early eighty's I given carbon fiber infused nycon parts to use on my speedskates; they worked quite well and never failed.

Man, you guys have to stop messing with the time / space continuum, or whatever that is.

This is America by gosh!

And as said in Animal House, Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.........

And being a wonderful country, we are allowed to buy crappy foreign made parts that break, so that we can buy more of the same crappy part, and everybody makes money along the way........................

Yes, I would happily pay double for a part that might actually last, and that was really "Made in America"!

It is just near-impossible to find such things.

Interesting points, all.

Seems like some of the other designs have more features to guide the shade in and lock it in place...tough to say how significantly different a design is from another. Intellectual property stuff is messy, especially with the accessibility of consumer 3D printing.

Not planning on selling, but looking forward to easily replacing these if they break.

The point for me is that it was fun to flex the 3D drawing skills and make something practical. I've got enough desktop doo-dads haha.

Great job and there is nothing negative about your creation. I recently bought the junk one from China on EBay and wish I had your talent and resources. Thanks for sharing.
