Nice to have the dates this far in advance. The other activities would be nice to know by end of year, just so some can justify the time for the trip, especially if your vacation time from work is a premium

There will be usual pizza and brew reception @ Holiday Inn University Plaza on Wed nite - always very popular.
The 25 mile caravan ride to Frnklin for BBQ on Thursday nite was very well received - so we'll try for that again. (It was fun to see ~ 30ish Vettes in a line, cruising the expressway to the "Oasis"!)
As mentioned, the Motor Sports Park (high speed) touring laps are popular.
The go carting was a big success - participants had a ball
The presentations and videos were well received (Doug Rippy's segment on the insides of the ZR-1 racing was quite...revealing!)
And, there's talk of an NCM Track-X event and Autocross.

All in all 2017 was a very good gathering, and well attended. There were some last minute changes - there always are: additions and deletions out of our control. Tho having a complete agenda as early as the first of the year would be ideal, a certain amount of fluidity remains up to and even during the Gathering - some details don't get filled in until check in time. But, the big pieces - dates and major activities - are in place, AND seeing old friends and meeting new ones is the real attraction. "It's the PEOPLE", as Kevin says, that is the main attraction!

So, for those that missed it, you missed a "goodun!" Hope this early heads-up helps everyone get ready, mark your calendars!

Next gathering: Carlisle!! August 24-27th. THAT is a Vette cruise-in to end all! New and old, un-molested and wildly modified and everywhere in between! The scale boggles the mind!

But, as always, its the comradery within the Club - in the setting of a grand exhibition - that is the biggest attraction of all.=D>.

Robert, I'll check out both. Of course, this was a rhetorical question.
You know the issues. If I can find an opening, we'll need the numbers
to put up the $$ PRIOR so the club isn't left with the bill when only 6 cars
show up for an event.

Joe, I am not doing anything to the GS, She has an 8 yr./56K mile bumper to bumper.
If the new ZR1 has a LT5 I am going to buy one, If it has a bigger supercharger I will buy a C6 ZR-1.

Ted, Autocross is $20.00 a car paid for by participants, Drag racing can be covered by donations and participants, Neither of which will cost the ZR-1 Net Registry members anything.

All,

It’s Time for the Gathering! We are getting excited as the upcoming Gathering at the National Corvette Museum is getting closer. Registration for the ZR-1 / GSR / Gathering is now open on the National Corvette Museum’s website, and ends Monday May 7th. All event sign-ups are available on the same link (MSP Track, Karting and Banquet). Lodging is still available under the ZR-1 Net / GS Registry’s block of rooms at the Holiday Inn University Plaza, block code ZR5, or simply click the below link ZR-1 Net / GSR Registry. Included with our block is breakfast at the hotel’s café – If you have previously booked without using the ZR5 code, please contact the hotel and let them know you are with the ZR-1 Net Registry. Also, if you have any problems, please feel free to contact myself or Ted Feder (events@zr1netregistry.com)

There will be multiple road trips and seminars, but we’d like to highlight a few items:

Track Day at the Motorsports Park: No matter what your skill is on a motorsports track, we can accommodate you! There will be multiple run groups for beginners, intermediate and advanced drivers. The morning prior to our time on the track, we will conduct a driving session at the National Corvette Museum in order to make you a safer and better prepared driver for the event. Want to know what it’s like on the track? Take a short ride with Mike Rivet (Former Pro Escort Series race driver) and I around the NCM’s Motorsports Park track during a prior year’s touring lap session. Mike will also be instructing at the NCM prior to our track event.

Karting at the Motorsports Park: Think you’re a great driver? Let’s really go all out and find out who is the fastest on the Motorsport Park’s ¼ mile Karting track. This is great fun for everyone, from those who want to see what Karting is all about, to those who can’t get enough of the smell of gas and burning rubber! We’ll meet up at the Kartplex, form into racing teams, and let the fun begin! Can’t get enough? There are multiple sessions throughout the afternoon for those who want to spend more time on the track – you will not be disappointed!

Black Widow ZR-1s: The 25th Anniversary of the Black Widow Corvette will be celebrated. These special Corvettes will be on display within the National Corvette Museum, as well as seminars conducted by key members of DRM Motorsports, MerCruiser and Lotus to share with us the aggressive endeavor of creating a RPO concept 475HP ZR-1 for Chevrolet in 1993. Find why these special cars are so historically important to the history of the C4 Corvette ZR-1, and how they came to be. More importantly, if accepted as a RPO, they would have been the most powerful naturally aspirated Corvette ever made; more powerful than today’s Corvette, 25 years later.

Attention DRM-500 / 600 Owners: I’m looking to get in contact with all DRM owners. If I have not already identified your GSR as a DRM and spoken with you, please contact me.

Questions: If you have any questions regarding the event, please feel free to contact Karen Renfrow (270-467-8804) or Bryce Burklow (270-777-4506) regarding event registration at our National Corvette Museum; or the ZR-1 Net's Events Chairman, Ted Feder, at events@zr1netregistry.

Safety: Lastly, if you are registering to participate on the Motorsports Park track, please prepare now to ensure your GSR is prepared, both for the trip and the track. I can’t emphasize enough the need to flush brake fluid annually and that tires are in good condition. We want to ensure everyone has a great time on the track, and a good trip home.

We look forward to seeing you at the Gathering! Travel safe.

You guys are Killing me!

My wife is having surgery that weekend so we aren’t going to make it this year. We debated moving it so we could go but it is something that needs to happen so we kept the appointment. (Nothing crazy, or life threatening, but necessary.)

And the Haibeck picnic on the 27th? That’s the weekend of the Indy500! I have to work that weekend!

Seriously though take a ton of pictures We look forward to living vicariously through all of you at the gathering, and hoping the best in terms of scheduling for 2019!

Hi Bob,

We've been requested not to share the seminars from the Gathering - that's the lure of coming to the Gathering event. I'm amazed each year how much more I learn about the ZR-1 and C4s in general, and I consider myself pretty smart on our C4/ZR-1 history.

Last year with Doug Rippie was pretty....WOW.... We learned how to make C4s fast. Drivetrain makes your ZR-1 go fast, but the chassis is mostly overlooked when we talk about fast cars. Doug showed us how he made his Escort / Corvette Challenge / World Challenge so fast. Wow! That's why I value most of the DRM 500/600 ZR-1s so high over many other tuner cars... and it has nothing to do with coil-overs as some might think. ......Doug will be there again this year, and for the price of a drink, you might get a few golden C4 nuggets out of him!

First I've heard about the Karting - it is still on the registration schedule as well as the Motorsport Park's calendar - I'll call and find out if something has changed. We had a full 2 sessions last year, unless they are changing the venue.

With regard to the agenda, it is posted on the NCM's website. The big items:

Getting together - the absolute best part of the Gathering!!!

Okay, the schedule (big items):

Wed Evening - Beer / Pizza Reception at the U-Plaza.

Thursday morning, Driving Instruction by Escort Series Pro Driver Mike Rivet and HPDE instructor Ray Davis from the GSR. I'll throw in my $.02 in there too as I hold a racing comp license and currently run in the vintage sprint series. This is all about how to make your car go fast safely - this is our 4th year conducting the seminar, and last year was standing room only. Then we'll head over to the track by noon to get the required safety briefing, and begin our touring laps throughout the afternoon. Perfect as you'll actually have the opportunity to practice what we've been taught in the driving seminar..... Touring Laps are run in skill groups, and I believe everyone who has run with us as not been at all disappointed. Take a peek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIsgvb9USUo
If you would like an instructor to ride with you, one may be available!
Following our time on track, we'll head down to Franklin, KY for Dinner. It's quite a sight. Last year we had cars pulling off the highway to take photos of all of us coming down the highway. It was a pretty cool experience, and dinner with everyone was great. I recommend sitting with someone you don't know, and make a new good friend!

On Friday morning, we'll have a seminar with Marc Haibeck on Tuning the LT5, where we'll walk you through the basics of tuning, such as the process of tuning and all the software and equipment needed. A few attendees requested time from Marc to show them what tuning is all about - we've made it a full seminar, and I'm sure it will be well attended. It's always awesome to have the opportunity to speak with Marc out of the shop and learn from him.... hard to do when Marc is back at the shop.... he has a business to run, and the honored responsibility to keep our LT5s going (faster!) In the afternoon, we'll head back over to the MSP track for the Karting sessions. These aren't slow by any means, and the track is a full 1/4 mile. I have to say that driving these cars will give you a great workout. Again, be as competitive as you want - we'll form teams, race against each other, and have a ton of fun! Friday evening is dinner on your own, then we'll convene at the U-Plaza where we'll kick the keg from Wednesday night, and talk about our time on the track, and buy drinks for our guest speakers until they share a few untold stories to us regarding how they were able to get things done.... such as pillaging someone's ZR-1 in the parking lot of Daytona International Speedway in order to put a certain ZR-1 race car back on track to finish the IMSA endurance series race.

Saturday we'll have a morning seminar with Marc Haibeck regarding C4 performance issues, then photos of all of us, membership meeting of the ZR-1 Net Registry, then the main attraction - the Black Widow - featuring Gary Cline, Doug Rippie, Graham Behan and Greg VanDeventer. With this group, you'll get the no kidding insight of how this incredible project occurred, and the trials and tribulations to getting MerCruiser's race engines (already producing for Tommy Morrison and Kim Baker) into 8 ZR-1s as a proof of concept for a limited 100 car RPO that would have make a 50-state legal 475hp LT5 available to enthusiasts back in 1993. It would have destroyed it's Viper competition during that time period. Upon the conclusion of the seminar, we'll go out into the boulevard for a guided tour of the Black Widow ZR-1s. (remember, DRM made these ZR-1s fast, so ask a lot of questions!).

We'll conclude the event with the banquet, and have asked our guest speakers to tie in to the theme of the event with the evolution of LT5 performance.... how R&D did MerCruiser and/or Lotus do to find another few hundred HP out of the existing engine platform, and how did these engines find their way to the race track? How did Doug Rippie and John Lingenfelter find their way to becoming the great LT5 tuners? They were both super busy with their shops and setting records at every corner. You will be surprised to learn their relationships came to be, and discover the people whose work led to the ZR-1 filling pages of automotive racing / performance / enthusiast magazines and television shows for years after the initial hype of the ZR-1 diminished. The last part of the evening will be the conclusion of the silent auction where we will have some fantastic items provided by our sponsors of the Gathering event - DRM Motorsports, Jerry's Gaskets, Haibeck Automotive, ZF Doc, etc., as well as the live auction of 2 event banners - which I think are spectacular. Oh, did I mention that we will have specially minted pewter Black Widow coins available for ZR-1 member attendees of this special event. I can't tell you how much time and effort has gone just into the design and CAD relief of the raised plenum incorporated into the design of this special 1 3/4" 3D coin.

So, it's not too late if you have not already signed up to come on out and join us!

Marc, so sorry we'll miss you and Shannon, but we are planning on seeing you at Indy (Vintage races) shortly after the Gathering!

Regards,
Mark

I love the Black Widow cars... but LS7????

To clarify, the comparison was to today's C7 Corvette (460hp), not the C6 Z06 (LS7 is 505hp). That said, the Black Widow proof of concept cars presented Chevrolet with completed 50-state legal 525hp / 500hp / 475hp and 465hp variants of the LT5 to choose from, which is even more impressive.

Mark

Interesting!

And, according to Young (HOTB), GM poo poo'ed the Gen III LT5 because 1) it would have to go through emissions certification, and because the LS1 was in final stages of development and (FRANKLY) 475 hp would have crushed the launching of the base C5 offering, and then the argument the LT5 wouldn't fit under the C5 hood (but when they needed room for the C7 ZR1 supercharger, a little "bump" in the hood line...NO PROBLEM!!.

Oh, well:blahblah::blahblah:.........:censored:

It is our first try. It will be July 19-22. We are staying in canyon city the first night and will cross the royal gorge bridge then will end up in Blackhawk at the casino to stay the rest of the days. We will do day drives each day. Final routes are still being worked out but may include Rocky Mountain National Park, Breckinridge area, possibly Bandimere if they are racing. Pikes peak isn’t open for driving this summer.

Hi ZR1Assassin. You have asked a couple of questions, that no one appears to have answered for you so here goes. Please work enough time into your schedule to go to the NCM to register and pick up your credentials before you do anything else. The credentials are imprinted with what you have registered for i.e. Karting, Touring Laps and you will not be allowed in to the events without them. The NCM track/Go Kart track is literally "across the highway" from the NCM. The tour of the Corvette Museum is free as you are registered for the event and you can do it on your own time. Hope this helps.

Hi Bob,

We've been requested not to share the seminars from the Gathering - that's the lure of coming to the Gathering event. I'm amazed each year how much more I learn about the ZR-1 and C4s in general, and I consider myself pretty smart on our C4/ZR-1 history.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but who requested that you not record the seminars to get a few more guys to show up at the Gathering? If the issue is attendance, you could embargo the video for a while, (a few months, a year), or just have it accessible on the members section of this site. That might even help sell a few memberships here.

The NCM itself should be recording every historically significant seminar about the Corvette for posterity. Isn't this obvious?
I really don't mean to sound critical, but don't you think that this is an amazingly short sighted approach to Corvette history? These guys have the most detailed, first hand, knowledge of the development of this car, and they're not going to be available forever. Surely you would want to save what they have to offer. I doubt if there would be any proprietary company secrets revealed, or anything that should not be recorded.

You are aware that there are a lot of us that can't come to the Gathering because of family commitments and responsibilities, or simple logistics like living a long distance from Bowling Green... Europe, Hawaii. This thread is full of r.s.v.p's from guys that can't come for good reason.
I've made the decision not to come because of the weather. We are having a big storm front passing through Florida right now, and my whole 900mi. route to the Museum is forecast to be wet and rainy for the rest of the week. With the slick Autocross tires I have on the ZR-1, it's very problematic to make the trip in the rain.
If this policy is the Museum's decision, it's a real shame. Think of the value of having video of the original developers tell the story about the making of this car. Don't you wish we had more of a film record of interviews with Zora and Bill Mitchell, John Lingenfelter, Larry Shinoda, etc., all gone now, that you could access on the web. Either at the NCM website, or on YouTube. What a wealth of knowledge and background on the car. There are a few clips of these guys, but not as much as we'd like.
I've done a couple of ZR-1 specific clips in the past at the Gathering, and put them on YouTube. Like the interview with Lane Goldstein explaining the details of his full race 1/4 mi. car, and the only "in car" video of it racing. And I would sure like to get the inside story of the "Black Widow" project to save for ZR-1 history. But myself, and hundreds, maybe thousands, of others will never get to see it.

If this policy changes I would volunteer to show up at the next Gathering to record whatever seminars are available. Not to do it is a shame.

Bob, I absolutely agree. All of these seminars should be recorded for historical archives and be available to future owners who will love these cars as we did long after we -- and the recorded experts -- are gone. --Bob

I agree with the above comments and could have sworn I saw a video recorder being used at the 2015 Gathering. Beyond that, what "vette guy" actually says is "released" - that does not mean video was not made, just could not be posted to places like youtube.

As a former board member of the NCM, 2010-2014, I thought the museum was recording most of the seminars that occur at the museum, but maybe my recollection is at the bigger events like the Birthday Bash and the Labor/Anniversary events.

I do know that when I was a board member, the museum had a plan to document the stories of some of the legendary developers of the Corvette for prosperity, which included a lot of people affiliated with the ZR-1. Since leaving the board, I haven't kept up with the status of this documentation, but if someone wants to compile a list of ZR-1 specific legends, I don't have a problem making contact with the museum to determine if they have reached out to those folks or not.

Joe,

My recollection is that the NCM retains rights to presentations done on NCM premises and could not be distributed without their permission.

First off, I appreciate the hard work folks on the ZR-1 Net Registry board, like Mark (Vette Guy), and many others voluntarily do... as well as those who've volunteered for work at the NCM. I'm sure it requires a significant amount of work to make excellent events like Gatherings and Mountain Runs happen.

That said, I'm totally with those who see the incredible value - both historically and practically - of recording videos of those who speak at the ZR-1 Gatherings and other venues. However, recording them does not go far enough. It is in the public access to them that the true value can be realized. I will list an example of one I am familiar with.

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) not only has an superb museum, and a huge annual gathering (https://www.eaa.org/en/airventure), but has an excellent video documentation of those who've been a part of aviation history. It's called "Timeless Voices of Aviation." Many, of course, are veterans who flew in our wars. It is not only highly inspirational as to those who have gone before us to preserve our freedoms, but one can learn from the perseverance, challenges, teamwork and character that went into accomplishing the amazing things they did.

If interested, here is the website: https://www.eaa.org/en/eaa-museum/museum-collection/timeless-voices-of-aviation-video-diaries. Click on "Watch Now" and, if desired do a Search (upper right) for a name or an aircraft (e.g. "P-51"), and enjoy.

From what others are saying, it sounds like this is much like the type of historical documentation that's needed. AND WITH PUBLIC ACCESS on the Web. Why does there appear to be such a hesitancy by the NCM to do this? It could only tremendously HELP their cause by generating the excitement and historical appreciation for the Corvette brand and it's Museum, much less our beloved ZR-1.

Furthermore, with video access of speakers who've been a part of Corvette/ZR-1 history, one can also learn from the perseverance, challenges, teamwork and character that went into accomplishing the amazing things they did.

Cheers,
"G"

I don't really know what plans the NCM has for acquiring and preserving historical material pertaining to the Corvette. There is certainly plenty of it around on YouTube. It would be a great service to all of us for the NCM to download, and organize, what's already available for the use of the hobby.

My current concern is, what's going to happen this week? You've got a number of guys that participated in the "Black Widow" effort in the house. It would be smart to take advantage of the opportunity to get that presentation on video.
Modern HD home video cameras are very good. You could even use an iPhone. Just do it.
If anyone is willing to try, contact me, and I will give you some tips to make it easier. I've shot in that venue before.
As far as permissions go, I don't think there would be a problem with the NCM, unless they are already going to record it. If they aren't, as long as you don't disrupt or delay the program. I wouldn't even bring it up.
Of course, you need to talk to the speakers to make sure it's ok with them. But these guys would probably be pleased, and proud, to get this material into the archives.
Good Luck, I wish I was there.

BTW, Anything you shoot is your property, and you need no permissions to govern it's use, unless you want to sell it. But this is a non profit effort.

I could swear I read a post in this thread by Paul Workman. Where'd it go?

PS I agree with the prior comments about preserving these historical presentations.

You did see one, Todd. But, my momma said: "Never write a letter when your angry!" And, I was (still am...just simmering now).

After cooling off a tad (and talking this issue over with other other rational heads) a couple legit things came to light which I hadn't considered.

For example, presentations by special guests (such as yourself, Todd, and other VIP insiders too) delivered to attendees in the NCM (theater) sometimes contain "trade secrets": a juicy perk or two for the attendees perhaps, but guests speakers may NOT want certain things to end up on YouTube or the like.[-X I get that. But, fear NOT! The rest of the info will be preserved and distributed, e.g., HOTB, for just one, AND links to source presenters' web sites like Marc Haibeck's, etc.

Anyway...there are some other unrelated busine$$ 'kinks' with the C4 gatherings in general - that have been brewing for a year or more that need to be worked out...e.g., such as ideas for attracting more of the general C4 participants.

"KEEP THE LEGEND ALIVE" is our moto and concern. The NCM is a business for profit. Somehow the two parties can work together to find ways that are mutually beneficial to BOTH concerns. (In fact, some of those formative discussions w/ the NCM are planned to take place this week during the Gathering.) Some changes and compromises would not be unexpected. But, the goal is to negotiate an business arrangement that promotes the C4, the ZR-1 and Grand Sport Registries' concerns.

Come to the ZR-1 Registry's general meeting (check the agenda for time and place when you arrive). Your ideas on these (or any other) topics are welcome!

Well I and Hans made it back from our first C4 gathering and I have to say we had a great time!! I had the best time meeting people that love the ZR1 and putting a face to the names I see on the forum. Everyone was so welcoming and very eager to talk about their Z and to answer any questions with their knowledge. You can't ask for a better community!! I suggest if you haven't been....make the effort to attend. It's a great way to support the registry and keep the beast alive!

Had a blast with MR6 and BG. Many thanks to all that kept me in the game after losing a brake caliber bolt. It would not be BG without fixing a car in the parking lot. Along with mine, two alternators were replaced as well. I was lucky the bolt came out an hour from the Holiday Inn and did not drop out hours before on the dragon or the next day on the BG track.
