Should I be concerned....

Getting gas at lunch today, and I noticed that rust. Is this a normal C4 Vette thing or any else have this on their Beast? Should I be concerned....6283

Make sure the drain tube at the center of your photo is not plugged up. I use compressed air to keep it clean. If it is plugged water can back up and possibly get pass the gas cap and into the tank.

IMO, I don't think it is a major issue. Follow the advice above, checking your drain tube. To me it may be more of a moisture issue, is the cap always completely tight? If you are concerned, I would change out the fuel filter and then cut open the one you just replaced. That way you would be able to see if there are any particles that were in the tank and caught in the filter. And when changing the filter, if the fuel is that bad, mostly likely you would see a dis colorization and particles come out from the tank line to the filter.

Thanks fellas.....I will check that drain tube before work. And I always crank my gas cap down till I hear a couple of clicks. In the storage unit I keep it in, somedays I will go in and the concrete floor is damp and the car as well.....

Same here until I laid down some insulation. The engine used to be covered in sweat (condensation), and I figured that can't be good!

Mid America Motorworks and others sell fancy floor mats which prevents that. Or, do like I did and pick up a carpet remnant and lay it on the floor. No more sweating!

Thanks Paul! That is exactly what would happen. I'd roll open the door, take the car cover off, and behold sweaty car and engine....I will see if I can find some used carpet or cheap garage mats.

If you have a very cold concrete floor you may get condensation from warm air passing over the cold floor which collects on the underside of the ZR-1. These interlocking 2 ft x 2 ft closed cell EVA 3/8 inch thick foam pads are ideal to add a bit of a moisture barrier between the floor and underside of the ZR1 as well as nice anti slip when working on the LT5 or getting in and out of the ZR-1.

I was going to say too much beach time.... However as others have pointed out the floor coverings and the clearing of the drain tube is really all that is needed. I would clean the underside of the cap, the top of the filler neck and the boot area and add a little dielectric grease were the cap meets the filler neck to see if that resolves the rust issue. Its all from moisture retention. Just some ideas. GC

Thanks everyone for the advice :) I too couldn't remember who had the picture of the garage mats, thank Dynomite!! And does anyone know if a locking gas cap would prevent this in the future?

Remove the rubber and put a rag around the gas filler section and soak it in WD40 spray and wipe down . It will drip a bit so do this over a cement floor or rags under the car . This will slow down the rust a bit and also just wipe off the access oil . I did it on our 1995 last spring and will do it again before winter .
