View Full Version : Heater hose coupler on the T-Stat... how to remove?

I've just noted a super small leak coming from one of the heater hoses that connects to the top of the the T-Stat housing. The leak is at the connection area. When I say small, the drip on the ground is about a dime size per day after a run. The leak runs down to the T-Stat then onto the frame then the ground. I've been wiping it with a shop rag.
My question is how does the coupler come apart on the T-Stat housing? It looks like something I've never seen? Also, it look likes the whole hose needs to be replaced all the way back to the fire wall? I just (like a month ago) did a radiator swap and new hoses from Jerry's. FML as there seems to be almost no room to get at this thing!
Although my OCD is on over drive I'm tempted (for a while) to leave it and keep an eye on it. Funny, I had a small lower radiator hose leak on my 82 that did not nearly bug me like this-- and the ZR1 leak is smaller!
Thanks!

Is the leaking coming from the thermostat housing heater nipple?

Thanks- the leak appears to be coming from the coupler and not the T-Stat.
I called Jerry and (he is always helpful) said that my hose was probably OK and that the O ring in the T-Stat is probably going bad due to corrosion. Jerry said that the thermostat assembly should be removed and benched for proper cleaning before installation.
What is the trick to remove the hose(s) from the assembly? There is a little gizmo that seems to hold the hose in place through some recess?

Looks like my heater hose connection is giving up the ghost after 24 years and 164,000 miles. I just ordered a new and improved, Jerry manufactured heater hose fitting.
Are black plastic tabs spread outwards to release the heater hose? Any special trick? Any suggestion in removing the fitting from the housing? I would really prefer not to bungle this. Know what I mean?

I did my Heater Hose and was easy to figure out after I received Jerry's new Heater Hose Connector.
The Heater Hose Connector is threaded into the Thermostat Housing.
As I recall.....I separated the Hose from the Connector and cleaned up the Hose end that fits into the New Connector from Jerry. I think I separated the Thermostat Housing removing all coolant hoses lifting thermostat housing top side.

And a seal is in the fitting? And not on the hose end?

I do not recall any seal on hose end but do recall it was a bit difficult to separate. That is why I brought the assembly too top side with that heater hose connected.

This repair (done almost a year ago) was a royal PITA. The coupling was not the problem but the little "pot metal" nipple fused to the housing. I cried uncle and took it to my trusted shop where they had to remove the entire unit and ended up breaking off the housing with the threads stuck inside. They had to carefully-thread by thread- grind it out with a dremmel so as not to screw up the housing. Assembly was easy (for them!) and no leaks since.

Upon close inspection, it seems heater return hose with make fitting (that connects to Jerry supplied fitting to thermostat housing) is leaking. Anyone know where I can find this hose with male fitting? Looks like the fitting is crimped on.

Yun,
You might find it here. Paste this link into a browser.

Items on pages 26 and 27 look interesting.

Hi Marc!
Tried Dayco website and even found Dayco parts listing for ZR-1. However, for heater hoses, only lists ID dimension.

I ordered heater fitting from Jerry and perhaps take it to hose fabrication shop (hopefully can find one) and see if it can be made.

This is how it's fabricated and I do believe you could use this as a 'trial fit' to Jerry's fitting. Late 90's GM trucks used similar and also others.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=15708623
The link includes what I think is likely for a GM hose and also a Dorman to replace it.
I'd think you would need to remove the entire heater hose assembly to carry to a shop for fabrication after buying an appropriate hose that had a correct 'nipple'.
I'll poke around for maybe a more reasonable approach but this will give you something to look at that's maybe appropriate. I'm not sure if Dayco actually duplicates that heater hose.
Now if you meant the 'other' heater hose that's actually a 'female' attachment I've never tried to duplicate that.
+++There's maybe 20 or so GM pipes that could be used VS the one I linked that could be researched to use. I have likely a list of a few that I could offer YOU!!!

Hi, Dave!
Hope you are doing well.
Rubber hose with crimped on nipple is about 8" long. Rubber hose end is slipped on over 5/8" aluminum pipe (with a hose clamp) which continues to firewall.
I ordered a plastic heater hose connector for late 90s early 2000 GM truck (Tahoe, Yukon, etc.) because it looked like it came with capped off hose end.

I am hoping it's for 5/8" ID hose.

Hello Yun,
Thanks for the 'hello' - maybe next year Carlisle 'a hand-shake'!!
That's nothing but an 800-414 Dorman that you could source locally for an easy return. If you've a hose clamp (not a crimp) to the intermediate pipe my first inclination is that someone has already been there. I've heater hose assemblies here and the intermediate pipe is 'crimped' at every joint to hose. Mine are '90 and '91 assemblies but I thought the assembly usage was continued through end of production.
The hose I linked is for sure 5/8 nipple. The part you've ordered - I've no idea.
The pipe #'s I have for 'other' applications I'd think better solution if you've a failed male nipple.

Hello Yun,
Thanks for the 'hello' - maybe next year Carlisle 'a hand-shake'!!
Truly look forward to that hand shake!
Not so sure if factory or rigged because aluminum pipe end is rolled.
Let me see what shows up first. I was thinking about Dorman 626-105 also.
Right now it's seeping ever so light. I am trying to get all the pieces so that I can knock it out when I do my bi-annual coolant change come spring.

David,
Piece you suggested, Dorman 626-105, fits Jerry supplied fitting.
