IMPORTANT INFO
You MUST tech your car before participating in the Mountain Run. Tires, brakes, brake fluid, oil, coolant, etc. etc. Failure to properly prepare usually results in a major headache (or worse). That said, we always have knowledgeable mechanics on the run with the tools to handle most mishaps that might occur.

QUESTIONS
If you have any questions, post here or contact Robert DeMarco, Paul Workman, or Gunny via PM or email. Have any special requests for a certain road or particular stop? let us know and if it's possible to accommodate within the existing maps' framework we will do so.

OK, YOU'RE DEFINITELY GOING ON MR5 ... WHAT NEXT?
* Post here and/or contact Gunny via PM or email.
* Make your hotel reservations (2 locations)
* Let Gunny know how many will be on the New Belgium tour
I will email all participants with additional info as well as request updated info from participants. Don't post your info publicly - we'll do this via email. If you don't know Gunny's email send him a message HERE (http://www.zrwon.com/contact/index.html).

NEW BELGIUM BREWERY TOUR
This is a free tour but spaces will be at a premium & may not be guaranteed. You will need to sign up with me no later than March 10. First come, first served.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST
If you've been on at least one mountain run then you already know what it's all about. If you've never been on a mountain run, then you need to try it. We try hard to have something for everyone and to have a wonderful and safe trip through some spectacular mountains and roads. Rod, do a follow up call to the Blowing Rock front desk -- sometimes they don't provide all the particulars to every employee. If they don't have it right, I'm sure they will make the correction ASAP. Better now than on May 14th.

Thanks Gunny for getting back to me via PM. Talking with wife now about logistics on this end which leads to another question. So the plan is, on the final day, to drive up to BG see museum then head back without an overnite?

I may contemplate staying overnite in BG too. I may also pass on the Brewery tour since not a beer drinker. What's the alternate for those not doing the Brewery tour?

Robert

George, How long does the brewery tour take?

How many drivers in the aggressive group plan on taking in the brewery tour?

The brewery tour (free) takes approx. 1 hour, followed by a visit to the tasting room (optional and not free). The first tour is at 11:30 AM, second tour at 12:00, and so on with a maximum of 20 in each tour. I don't yet have a total count of how many are planning on the brewery tour much less broken down to aggressive group. The brewery tour is on Monday, a day where we all have the same route and less conducive to breaking down into different groups. We can chat about that in a couple of weeks after I return home (currently on a road trip out west).

To recap the brewery scenario: assuming 40 taking the tour, the first 20 starts at 11:30 followed by the second 20 at 12:00. Following the tour and possibly a quick stop at the tasting room, we can either walk a short distance to a nearby restaurant (or drive) for lunch, then depart for Gatlinburg.

Not certain I'm understanding your first question but will try. The final day, Wednesday, is the run from Gatlinburg to BG with the purpose of attending the annual C4 Gathering at the NCM (there's another thread on the forums about this event). Most, but not all, mountain run participants go to BG, stay at the Holiday Inn University Plaza, and participate in the various activities/events of the C4 Gathering (there will be some really good track time on the new NCM track). The C4 Gathering ends on Saturday night. So if you do both, you have a full week of Corvette activities. Anyone not wishing to make the Wed. trek to BG would be free to drive back home, spend another day in the mountains, or do whatever their schedule permits.

The brewery tour is quite interesting in that you see the entire behind the scenes operation of a significant craft brewery that is state of the art, having just been built within the last year. The tasting room is only one aspect and, especially since we are driving to Gatlinburg, we would expect everyone who does visit the tasting room, to do so in a responsible manner. Should you not want to do the brewery tour you are about 5 minutes from downtown Asheville which is very interesting to visit ... you could take an hour to sightsee and then meet the group for lunch before we make the afternoon run to Gatlinburg.

Sorry to hear that you can't make the Monday events. No problem participating in the remainder of MR5 ... be sure you have a reservation at the Park Vista for Monday & Tuesday nights. Try to arrive in Gatlinburg early enough Monday afternoon to join us for dinner. At that point we'll go over the details of Tuesday's run that you would have received at Sunday's driver's meeting. I'll try to take care of most of that via email prior to MR5 so that you will be on the same page as everyone else. Glad you can make Tuesday's run ... you will have a blast.

Dominic suggested replacing wiper blades - if we haven't already done so by then. Considering our track record for that week with the weather, it is an excellent suggestion. (In fact, I added it to my checklist:

8-2202 = AC Delco low profile 90-94 C4s*

20-2 = 90-94 Trico Flex Beam (20")*

8-2204 = AC Delco 95-96 C4s*

*The part numbers have not been verified by me personally. So, if anyone has purchased any low profile blades, feel free to make part number corrections!

... I have a handheld CB radio if that works...

We will be using FRS radios on MR5. Google FRS radio or FRS walkie-talkie and you will find plenty of info and places to buy. Some brands are Cobra, Motorola, Midland, etc. I've had decent luck with Motorola. You need one that has 22 channels with additional sub-channels (privacy channels). All the newer radios w/22 channels have the sub-channels, so that shouldn't be an issue.

DITOS on the Motorola FRS radios. Over the MRs, the Moto's always seemed to work - and some of the other brands were OK. But, the Moto's worked reliably and were the easiest to set up (Ch. 5, sub chan 3 is what we've used and had minimal issues with other users).

CORRECTION...:o Channel 3, sub chan 5. (My bad:nono:

There are two types of these radios that operate over some of the same channels with different rules.

FRS or Family radio service is limited to 0.5 watt power. This limits the range over which one can effectively communicate. The other type is General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) which is limited to 5.0 watts power, ten times greater than FRS.

The GMRS radios will have 2 power settings, 0.5 watt max, and 5.0 watt max. These radios must be on low power (operating FRS and not GMRS) for channels 8-14, as these channels are exclusive to FRS only. In order to legally operate GMRS at max 5.0 watts, must be on channels 1-7 or 15-22, must be licensed, and must use assigned call sign. Licensing cost $85 for 5 years.

Although it is illegal to exceed the 0.5 watt without being licensed, anecdotally, few that operate on the high power are licensed.

Ok so I just had to post up and say a HUGE thank you to all that attended! This was our first year, Nina and I, and might I say.... without a doubt, one of the best planned and best road trips I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of! Not only were the roads great, the scenery great but the people in attendance were top notch and made us feel so welcomed. Although we didn't meet everyone, those who we did meet were awesome to talk to, have lunch with and drive with. We are fully planning on attending next year for MR6 so put us on the list Gunny! And speaking of Gunny, you sir and your wife Kay, are about as perfect as new acquaintances could be! From your knowledge of the roads to your knowledge of the history there.... we fully appreciate it! I will spread the word, as I said I would, to everyone I come in contact with and instead of 40 or so cars this year, there may be twice that! And maybe next year, I'll be "official"....

Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts...

Chris and Nina!

A big thanks to Gunny , Robert and of course Paul for leading me around the mountains on an amazing roller coaster ride of twists , turns and amazing scenery .
A big thanks to Steve also for letting me brrraapp the throttle a few times in his beast of an LT5 so he could hear how his car sounded coming up the steep twisty road to the hotel lol .
So hoping to be able to do this again next year and meet up with such a huge group of great people who have a deep passion for the ZR-1 and Corvettes in general . Best road cars in the world ...

Nice to see all that green. Any evidence of the fires from last year? It look pretty dire on TV.

Yeah, I was surprised too; thoughts of driving among black tree trunks - was what I expected. And, you can see some spots and hilltops where (apparently) the fire was pretty intense - so much so the trees were killed.

There were places where there was evidence of black charring on tree trunks, and there were many trees laid down: didn't have to look hard for signs of the fire. But! Believe it or not, signs of it were subtle, actually. Mother nature is quick to recover, apparently.:dancing

Impression: Beautiful!!! Nothing like spring in the south!!:-D

Hey Mike...this was a fun trip! Glad you guys enjoyed it! It was so good to see you guys and going shopping with Deslie 😊
I am a "looker", love to look at the sights... so unless Paul wants to do a,"Thelma and Louise" over a Blue Ridge Mountain cliff, he'll need to drive, LOL!!!
It was great seeing everyone and I hope everyone (and more) come next year. If you have never been to the mountain runs, you are definitely missing out!
Gunny...great job - as always! I appreciate the hard work/long hours you and Robert (and anyone else working to put this together) put into this. It was wonderful to see Kay...beautiful as always - inside and out ❤
Next year, we bring sunscreen! 😳 LOL

Not posted yet ... I'm almost finished with the photos and will post a link as soon as I have uploaded them to my website. I'm also working on several video clips that I think everyone will enjoy ... the video clips are taking longer to edit than anticipated but I will let everyone know when they are uploaded.

My plate's been a bit loaded since the end of MR5 ... several of you know that I'm the primary caregiver for my 98 year old mother who is dealing with numerous aging issues including dementia. The last few weeks have been a bit rough for her and she's not bouncing back too well ... i.e. family needs have been a higher priority lately.

That said, I hope to have some photos up by week's end.

MR6 has not been formally announced as we are still working on the details. But you can go ahead and block your calendar for May 13-16, 2018. Complete info will be posted in this forum after the first of the year and will also be emailed to participants of any prior mountain run.

Not a firm date, but an educated guess. The MR tradition has been to caravan on the final day to BG for the C4 Gathering that usually occurs the week following Mother's Day. If that tradition continues then MR7 will be May 12-15, 2019.

Are there people that do both the mountain run as well as the corvette caravan? Having never been to the museum before I'm trying to plan my first trip. I'm thinking MR6 would be a great opportunity as opposed to waiting until 2019 for the corvette caravan. For people that do both, I'm assuming the mountain run is more enjoyable because the museum isn't as crowded?

An NCM Caravan is definitely a lot of fun ... but it can be incredibly crowded. I recommend the caravan to anyone simply for the unique experience of being a part of so many Corvettes.

The Mountain Run that we do (the inaugural MR1 consisted of 7 C4 ZR-1's) is certainly smaller than some events and one of the benefits of smaller is not being lost in the crowd. Also, the C4 Gathering (separate event) following the Mountain Run is not as large as one of the national NCM events. Pros & Cons to each. Perhaps previous MR attendees reading this can chime in & provide further insight, opinions, etc.

To whet your appetite for MR6 click HERE (http://www.zrwon.com/cruise/170514/index.html) for photos from MR5.

To view photos from other Vette events (previous mountain runs, 50th Caravan, etc.) visit my website ZRWON (http://www.zrwon.com/index.html) and navigate through the different albums.

Mountain Run 6 is mainly ZR-1 corvettes, but that is certainly not a requirement. We head for the mountains of Tennessee, West Virginia and Georgia. We whip around the mountains for 3 days, then end at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky for the annual gathering of the C4 corvettes. Lots of 90-95 ZR-1's and 96 Grand Sports. The event is mainly these two specialty cars because those are the people passionate about there 'vettes. However, it is the C4 gathering and all are welcome.
AND WE HAVE A GREAT TIME! -Steve
