Swapping pulleys on alternators

OK, thought this would be easy. Put the alternator fan in a vice just snug enough to hold and had my father hold it. 15/16 socket on breaker bar and with great force the nut and shaft appear to rotate together. Not loosening.Now what?

Breakaway oil and an air impact wrench?

You need an impact gun - air or electric.
Take it to a mechanic near you. Slip him a $5 and ask to borrow an impact.

The easiest way to accomplish this go to a service establishment where they have an air wrench. Tire place, Pep Boys, etc. and have them change out the pulleys for you. Will cost you a few dollars....

I ended up buying an electric corded impact wrench from Lowes, which did just fine. But I also have more use for the purchase.
You still need to prevent the fan from turning when loosening or to tighten the nut. I used a small crow bar for that purpose, just to wedge between the fan blades. Worked for me...

Or you can follow Dynomite's suggestion in post #84 & 85 in the link below with the alternator installed on the vehicle, and modifying the tools suggested....

OK, just realized the inside of the shaft is an allen.Can't use a socket,have to use a 15/16 offset box wrench and hold the shaft still with the allen. Of course I have all off sets to 7/8 so off to NAPA and hopefully they have one.

Pulleys swapped and alternator in. Soon as the battery is charged up I'll get my final grade.

Using a 15/16 offset box wrench on the nut and an allen in the shaft I was able to loosen the nut.The new alternator nut came off using a socket and breaker bar.Just swapped the spacer, pulley and washer from my old alternator to the new alternator. Started up and everything seems to be working correctly.Pulley and belt are spinning tru and the alternator fan is spinning tru(not hitting the alternator).I'll take it out for some real world testing tomorrow morning.

Most towns have old-time "generator/alternator rebuild shops".
If your town does not; send me a pm and I can get you the particulars of a shop that we have used for years that happily and competently rebuilds our units when we are striving for originality.
They don't wear smocks or white lab coats, and they have no "technicians", but they sure restore them to as new performance!

Gary, how did your 'real world testing' go??? Finished my install yesterday and all went well...No noise and happy about that, still have to get out on the road, but after I finish my panel project...
