1990 ZR1: Started engine but after about 2 minutes it stalled. Tried to restart but no luck. Smelled gas and found large puddle at front of car. Removed air filter and found large amount of fuel coming out of the plenum. Any suggestions? Please?

Fuel pressure regulator might be bad or stuck injector pull the spark plugs out to purge out the raw gas so you dont bend a valve

When that happened to my car it was the fuel pressure regulator, leaking.

Thanks for the info. I'll try the pressure regulator first. Anybody else seen this happen?

I had a similar issue. Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator also.

Hi,
I see two part numbers:
1990 to 1992 is 17112220
1993 to 1995 is 17069632
Are they interchangeable?

Thanks,
Bill

Is there any way to replace the diaphragm in the regulator?
That's pretty much the only part in them that could go bad...

Jagdpanzer cut one up to see if it was serviceable - can't do.

It's very possible there are other fuel regulators that might meet the specs, Just thinking(:

I would say yes, it doesn't matter. On both sites mentioned, Jerrys and Rock auto, they both show the unit for 90-95. Jerrys site mentions the "220" number and Rock Auto mentions both the "220" & the "632" numbers. So there should not be a problem. They are in a few $$ of each other, but they should both work just fine.

BTW Bill, I see you are in Warminster, I am right next door in Warrington, have to get together sometime.....

Did you just change out the regulator or was there something else you had to do to complete the repair?

FYI: When this repair is complete I will be posting the car for sale on this site with more info and pics: $15,900 or best offer.

It actually happened to the previous owner of my car before he shipped the car but yes I think they put a used regulator in place of the leaking one. You should do an oil change afterwards too, just in case any gas got in the oil.

Others her have cautioned against cranking the engine due to likely damage by hydrolocking

After you replace the FPR, change the oil as there's likely fuel in the oil pan.

On my NO START cars, on my red car I got battery charged up in the car for 24 hrs, then I jump in with the key, it cranks over 1-2 turns and fires right up ! But after 10 seconds it dies. This was after sitting for 6 months.
So then I try again, all dead, then I press that little button on ignition switch...the key release button, and then the starter connects and cranks over again.
But nothing fires. So I now learning the key switch release button has to be wiggled at same time as turning key in order to get started to engage. But engine still won't fire again.
Anyone else experience this ? Also the speedometer /gas gauge not lighting , but as the key turns there is a quick flash of the fuel gauge for 1 second.
Should I be changing out the ignition switch before I go any further in trying to start this beast ? Is that a hard job ?
