1990 ZR-1 'Active' EX5881

This Z also sold in 2009 during the great GM heritage dump. It hammered at $137K ($150.7K with fees). Bob Johnson was the high bidder that Tuesday. I was a bidder but got out early when the number skyrocketed. I had a hard time justifying that much for a "scrap title" Z.

You can watch it cross the block here:

In Palm Beach in 2010 1990 Active EX5886 sold for $60K ($66K with fees) so well bought? well sold? we will know Saturday @9:00PM

Bob is a bigtime BJ VIP. He even is featured in a Reliable commercial:

1989 ZR-1 "Pre Production" #0078

https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1989-CHEVROLET-CORVETTE-ZR1-201422

#0078 also sold in the BJ Scottsdale 2009 auction. I was not a bidder having won #74 Tuesday night. It hammered for $180K ($198K with fees) I was out in the audience:

https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1989-CHEVROLET-CORVETTE-ZR-1-COUPE-71862

my view:

Was a blurry shot. To nervous to hold camera steady!

In my opinion, this 89 ZR-1 is only second to the Geneva Show car in overall quality and originality.

Although I know these cars from 2009, I am excited to get a second chance to look at them. Some of the info I am going to get, hopefully is a picture of the SPI from the Active and the MM LT5 engine numbers from both of them.

The SPI should confirm what the original VIN number would have been. That way I can get the build sheet for it.

List of known MM#s

EX5023 will be for sale this Fall. I'm hoping for an appreciation of what it is and what it started from the beginning. There is a chance that it will cross the block in Scottsdale next January.

It will have to bring more than the 89's mentioned here or it will come home. Not doing a No Reserve auction. If BJ won't do it, it'll sell someplace else.

Brett, This will be a real nail bitter for me too. I'm hoping the room appreciates these two. There is no better judge of the top of the market then BJ on Saturday afternoon/night.

Amazing pieces of history. Would LOVE to have either of them in my garage...especially the Active car. But as Eric stated, you've gotta be a special kind of serious ZR-1 collector to drop that kind of coin on a scrap title.

I found the cars yesterday at the auction. I managed to get a glimpse of #0078's SPI but searched in vein for the SPI on the Active. It did not have one.

I know most of us on here didn't buy our Beasts to be long term investments. Rather to be enjoyed for what they are. But last night, I was watching a Mecum auction. And a red on black 1995 ZR-1 went across the block......I think it had under 15,000 miles and looked amazing. But what caught my ear was the announcers. When the ZR-1 came on the screen, they immediately started gushing about ZR-1s :)........They said that the market on C4 ZR-1s, will one day soon go stratospheric. Future prices will be big on any Z, but the 1990, the 93 Rubies, and the 95s will be the ones that appreciate. And they continue to scratch their heads on why the market is what it is. The car ended up selling for $28,000, and they said that is where the market is......BUT they also said if you want one, now is the time to buy. Because they see the market going nowhere but up.

Yes the 9PM slot has more to do with Bob Johnson the consignor then the car IMHO.

Does the car run?
Is the "Active" active?
Can you license this car for the road?

It was fully functional in 2009. Not sure about now. Scrap title is very very very x 10 hard to get properly registered. Not impossible but almost

I could have sworn that in earlier pics I've seen of this car, it had some sort of rectangular gauge installed under the stereo, to the right of the power key. Wonder why that's not there.

I was on this one to but stepped out.

Both ran (although #78 had a dead battery).

Glad one of them is back in the family!
