I've kind of run out of garage space since I added a Ferrari Testarossa and had thought about selling my ZR1. I bought it a few years ago for just under $30,000 and have spent maybe $15,000 in parts making it better. Retail is probably $20-25,000 for the car. It doesn't make any sense to sell it. Better to add garage space and enjoy the car. But it is sad to see the ZR1 prices languishing. I have always thought it was the best of the Vettes and yet the market obviously disagrees.

Same here ,I thought about selling mine ,I havent had it out of the garage in over a year..Work work work and time flies ... But me too I'm not giving it away..
The collectors market as a whole is down. Cars are selling for a lot less than they did just 2 years ago. Apparently people are investing their money elsewhere.

With the stock market at almost 21,000 it's probably obvious where people are putting there money....Agreed that car prices are down all over.....Now that the ZR-1 is getting to be antique age , prices may start slowly to come around..

I drove mine to work everyday while living in Florida. But I had reserved free indoor parking. The Z was 25 years old, so we both retired that year. The Z has 82K miles. Just replace the worn out items like brakes, tires and batteries. Enjoy it. Life is too short not to enjoy every day driving a Z. You might collect a few tickets once in awhile, so what!

My 91 Zr1 has "morphed" into my everyday driver.
My new "occasional driver" is a 2015 Challenger Scat Pack. It is a ridiculously fun car and the ZR1 is just a tiny bit cooler.

Hi, James. Thanks. Believe it or not I just finished some serious upgrades to the Rx7 and it is going in for a bare metal respray next week. I still absolutely love the car. All the refinements were just to make it nicer. Power is still from the 350 wheel hp NA 3 rotor, but the motor is much better now. Smoother. Better idle. Better sound through the new exhaust. (Sorry to go on about it...)

Well, since it makes no sense to sell the ZR1, I decided to improve it a bit. Had the engine painted. Put on new A-arms and bushes. New shocks. So, I'm keeping it and building a separate garage for the motorcycles...

Saw on Fleabay a 91 with 31K miles sold for $11,300 but was in Hawaii and would cost about $3,500 to ship back to the states (talk about seeing sight unseen other than pics).
I thought I bought my 91 on sale last year at $17K from another ZR1 Registry owner, but I guess not. Interesting to see all the ZR1's for sale on the Registry asking more and better top $'s.
Maybe with the new LT5 mid engine coming out soon that will spirit more talk of the C4 ZR1 and higher appreciation values!

The car in Hawaii did not sell (even though the site says it did; cancelled by owner)... the owner just decided to keep it, which I think is a great decision on his part. That car is worth more than the auction indicated. I was seriously considering buying that car but like you pointed out, the shipping costs were just too high.

Some people need the money and will just unload a car regardless of what it is depending on there circumstances I'm guessing....
Since the ZR-1 was priced at 60K to roughly 73K at the end of there run, what were there prices used from let's say 2000-2005 a decade later? 30-35K maybe for a fine example?
Take the Z06 C6......73K-81K roughly for them new from 06-12 maybe....Now you can get a nice example from 33K-42K a decade later for a good used one..
What I'm trying to get at is even though they are Corvettes some just seem to lose value, or don't hold the value you think they should...

The thing is that the fundamentals for the ZR1 being highly collectible are all there. It is a bit odd that they have apparently fallen in value so much. My 1990 M3 went from about $22,000 in 2006 to about $150,000 or more today. My Rx7 has gone up in value over the same period. So, I'm scratching my head a bit.

Ah. You may be asking a serious question. That car has 296,000 miles on it! Non-stock wheels. Engine compartment suggests motor may run. May not. Interior shot. Says he has new seats to replace the torn up ones in the pictures. This one belongs in a junk yard, but he can get $45,000 for it. Here are some links to the nicer M3's like mine.

Not to be rude, Henry, but you don't know the market. Whether you have seen them selling at this or that point or not is pretty irrelevant, isn't it? And, if you have a good condition E30 M3 for sale personally at $40,000, I will be happy to provide a link to the M3 SIG Group and it should sell very quickly. What I don't get is how a 1990 bimmer beemer whatever - that is roached except for the cheap paint job - is worth $42k? For a 4 banger? 290k+ miles? REALLY? And I bet parts for those are two or three times higher then even Z parts.. People are crazy.. There are BMW's all over craigslist for under $10k and I wouldn't buy one if my life depended on it...
I'm still ahead $ on my Z - but that's because I got a great deal on it (for those who don't know I traded a 71 Nova SS for it) and I haven't spent thousands on mods. I don't have time to drive it much so miles are still at 21k. It shows well - I've won class in 7 of 9 shows. I can get it out and have a 10 mile blast of fun and put it back away. I would love for it to be worth more - yes - but if it was I probably still wouldn't sell. Some Vette owners are financially able to just wheel and deal and buy/sell whatever they want - but some, like me, have less liquid assets then what their Vette is worth. So for now mine sits in the garage waiting for the opportunity to go terrorize the freeway once in awhile or get to go to a show. I'm not really worried about if it's worth $17k or $25k. If I have to sell it I will get what I get. I hope I don't have to. But this is a fact: if this site were to go away the value would decrease on all our Z's. Where else can we go to diagnose and repair issues - and find hard to find parts? This site is what helps us all maintain our cars...:salute:

much of the stuff can be cross referenced with other models (like i am finding with most of these marques). the condenser fan (NLA) went out on mine and it turns out the 318 fan is the same thing with a different plug.
i believe the e30 m3 is the most successful race car of all time... so people hang their hats on that. but at 7k+ made, they are not low production cars.
hopping out of the m3 into a zr1 for a drive is an eye opener....

how could anybody compare the boxy ugly bmw's to the sleek and beautiful corvette?? bmw's are ugly as hell. square german boxes. zero styling and puny performance. expensive to buy and expensive to maintain. my friend bought a 2003 m3 new and had it for 5 years until warranty almost ran out and unloaded that pile to some moron who I am sure is now paying lots in maintenance. German's in general make ugly sports cars. I like the amg slr mercedes and thats it.. it takes a lot of American tradition like side pipes, big engine with long front end styling.. its almost like a American engineer styled it. The rest of the Mercedes and bmw's are grandma cars.
Lets talk Corvette... shall we.

Well it's obvious the reason why they sold at such high prices is the anemic
amount of miles each one had.....I owned a 90 Fox body and a 95 convertible..
These cars were no big deal...Nice, but nothing over the top..Not to safe in the rain also...
Put the same amount of ZR-1s against it with similar miles and you will see how they compare......Thing is, I gaurantee not one would sell at what they were going for new......They would fetch decent prices but not the percentage wise those Mustangs sold for ......
Example: what did a fox body mustang sell for new? 20K I have no idea...Now a few of his cars sold for 3-4 times the amount they went for new?
Picture a ZR-1 bringing in three times the amount as they were new.....
Not going to happen....

Buddy do what you like. Resale is going to suck so just make it the way you like it. Life is too short and then we die. Enjoy your ride and forget about it. Some people luck out and for some reason make money on there fun time sports cars. Some dont. I still dont know how somebody can buy a bmw anything. Ugly square slow boxes...over priced...stiff riding...upright uncomfortable turds. There are lots of people who just go with the crowd so its cool to be a yuppie and be a fan of the beemers, the cubbies,, anything that is socially acceptable and is chic for the time. There is nothing more exhilarating than to beat up on a beemer or any german car. Enjoy your car and make it your own. If I felt this strong about my zr1 I would not have sold it. I sold it because of lack of mechanics in my state so I did not want to be retired and dealing with shipping the car all over the place. Good luck with your ride and enjoy it.

That Countach is one ugly SOB,always has been. If I had money to burn I wouldn't take one for half of what they go for. I could never understand the appeal of the thing. That BMW M3 that's getting crazy money, can't understand that either.
I wouldn't own a Countach for half price either. Most over-rated supercar ever. Its got a great motor and a pretty body. Everything else sucks. Terrible to try to drive if you can manage to get in. Pre-90's BMW's on the other hand may be boxes, but they are great drives. I have an early M3 that has become the cult favorite and it is genuinely fast and feels good like very little else. I wouldn't own a new BMW if you gave it to me.

I would get an M2 at this time. Its what the M3 used to be.

I had an 850 6 speed as DD for 10+ years. Absolutely beautiful, great cars. I see you have one of the very few CSI's. That's a keeper for sure!

Probably best looking car BMW ever built. They really need to get out of the rut they're in now styling wise.

Sure. Here's a picture of my new exhaust and a video of it running. I've been spending a lot of time building a new version of my exhaust and refining the engine and tune.

I want to make something clear. I built this car as a sophisticated sports/gt car that would have a great-sounding, linear rotary motor, but one that would be completely reliable, because it's NA. Although the motor has a lot more torque than 2 rotor single turbo motors, it only makes 360 to the wheels. That's a lot less than the 450 I had in my last FD, but, in a 2750 pound car it's still 7.6 pounds per hp. And, the power is there from maybe 2000 rpm through 8500 rpm and it will never pop. Again, not a numbers, bragging rights motor.
