Interesting car that has been for sale for a few years now. I wonder what it will bring? It would have also been nice to see some interior and engine pictures too.

That looks to be a very, very early pre-production ZR-1 model. That's interesting.....you can tell by the digital gauges and the rear wheels. With the rears having center caps covering the off-set lugs. Wow talk about a true sleeper........It would of been nice to see a picture of the engine

Do the digital gauges read that high on the tach in these cars? Also wonder what is going on with the rear end and how high off the ground it is.

The 89 ZR1s did have the high rpm tach.

This car has me intrigued....I think it is a very rare ZR-1. It caught my eye because of the wheels, which are exactly the same as on this preproduction Z........

I believe this car is as close as a production ready 89 that there is. This car is-was owned by a collector for years. All pre-production ZR-1s meaning anything before model year 1990 would look pretty much like this car. The earliest pre-production cars had an LT5 emblem where the ZR-1 emblem is on the bumper. I believe this maybe only a handful, meaning you could count on one hand production ready cars like this that are in public hands. I could be wrong on some of the facts here.

I think you maybe right. But the interior on the car for sale, is a '89 interior. Which is the same interior on the car in the book. I'd love to know the history of this car, or cars like it. Which as you said, must only be a handful......

All pre 90 cars had this interior. What makes this car extremely rare is the fact that it is factory fresh minus all the miles it has. And has been in private hands.I believe at one point the car was for sale at around $200,000. There are some here that know the history of the car and owner but you would have to ask about it in the GENERAL section to get someone's attention. I myself would like to know how it got sold to a private individual.

I dont think there is anything cooler than a digi dash zr-1. This car was packaged with two other c6 zr1s, but the seller wanted like 600k+ for all 3. Would love to own one, or the "snake skinner".

I am pretty sure this car was sold when GM sold off a bunch of their cars in 2009. It looks like this car sold for 198K when the buyers fee is included. I would like to know more about the overall condition of the car and what paperwork it has from GM. Interesting car for sure. I don't see it bringing 200K especially if it has been for sale for years at Nelson auto and has not sold during that time. That said, with an auction, you never know what will happen.

I don't believe this car was in the 2009 sale. The cars sold at that time were the Purple Smash car,Snake Skinner, the Dark Blue car that was used by a vocational school, maybe one of the narrow body convertible. Probably forgetting some here. An interisting note on the Purple Smash car,it's believed to be the Red car in a lot of the GM publicly photos including the solid Red car in this thread and the guy that bought the Purple car also bought the Dark Blue car that was used by a school somewhere.

According to the website, this is #78 out of 83. A production run of 1989s that must of all had the 1989 interior with the digital gauges and those wheels with the lug covers. I also wonder what documentation from GM is still with the car, and what its overall story is.......Does any member on here own one of the 83 produced?

This is an investment grade ZR-1. Someone may get it for a great price - given the current market and under-appreciation that currently exists.

Does anyone know the history behind why the rims were switched from having covers in 1989 to exposed lug nuts in 1990?

Simple styling change - the base cars dictated the ZR-1 wheels.

Most were destroyed. Other than the Yellow Geneva car in the NCM this is the only original pre production ZR-1 I've seen. There's a few more but none as nice as this one.

I haven't seen this car and know very little about it other than what's been discussed on the internet. I do know very few production ready pre 1990 cars are in public hands. A few years ago one of the U.K. crushed cars was resurrected and was for sale for I believe $200,000. It would be the White car. A few years ago I did see #3 and it's the same type 89-production ready as the one in this thread.

Most of these cars are long gone. From what i understand, they were built over a spread of time. I have the build sheet from car 10, and it is hand annotated from March of 88. This one is much later.

Tyler Townsley, Brett Henderson and Eric Jackson would be the experts in this area. Tyler and Brett have prototypes and Eric owns two 89's from the Heritage collection.
This 89 was also at the 2010 Gathering.

Both restored using donor cars, thats a little misleading isn't it? I would think as much of the original car was used as possible.

I am that guy. I was looking for a Callaway but for whatever reason, I never received any pictures from the sellers of two cars that I had serious interest in. I have had my eye on this car for years and with the help of a friend and some going back and forth, a deal was made. Even though it's more than I wanted to spend, it really was the car that I wanted all along.
Congratulations on the purchase.
Thank you.
