Wasn’t sure I’d be doing this, but life changes…in a good way! I’m posting my 1990 ZR-1 for sale, asking $17,000 for a very clean, original, well-maintained car that you can drive across this country tomorrow, take to an autocross and know it’s been set up right, take your significant other out to dinner and get the attention of the valet, or go for a beautiful mountain drive with the leaves changing. The one thing you CAN’T do is leave it in the garage and stare at it. This car was meant to be driven and enjoyed, currently with about 64k miles but I do drive it!

I bought it in October 2013 from the second owner. He only owned it for a few months, and was good friends with the original owner. In fact this was the car he had learned to drive in, and it was his dream to own it someday. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for him, but it has been a wonderful car for me. When I got it, it had been sitting in a warehouse for 13 years and because of that, it had some needs. It was super-clean and original, but cars don’t take kindly to sitting for a long time. It took me a few months to debug everything, and since then it has been an absolute rock. EVERYTHING works exactly like it should. Here’s a partial list of the things I’ve done.

Water pump
Serpentine belt
Tensioner rebuilt by Haibeck
Throttle body rebuilt by Haibeck
All new intake and throttle body gaskets from Jerry’s Gaskets
Fuel and air filters
All coolant hoses
Idle control valve
Plugs, wires, coil packs
O2 sensors
Clutch master
Clutch slave
Brake Fluid is fresh ATE
Akebono brake pads with about 3000 miles on them
VATS security override
Reconditioned HVAC head unit
Replaced driver’s window lift frame/motor
New door switches
4-wheel precision alignment, settings halfway between street and off-road aggressive

I drive it everywhere, not afraid of leaving it at the airport, or going on long road trips. I believe in driving a car and maintaining it properly, and keeping it clean and sharp for the local shows too. I just returned from a trip to South Carolina where it performed beautifully, and I’ll take it to Florida soon if someone doesn’t buy it. You might ask why I'm selling such a great car. Well I mentioned life changes, and this is something my wife and I have been working towards for years now. The 308 has already been sold and now the ZR-1 needs a new home, because we just picked up this beauty. The house will be rented and we are hitting the road. I can't wait!

Sad to hear about the decision to sell the ZR-1. I'm sure tit (er, I mean "it") wasn't an easy decision. It's a great car. It was good that it went to you after storage. You've done a great job with it.

Couldn't you buy a tow bar for it and pull it behind the RV? :-)

Nice, fully sorted, proven running great car, with pristine set of wheels...the easy decision in this case will be for the buyer for sure.

Believe me I considered it! But part of the plan is doing some offroading out west, and I don't think the ZR-1 is the right vehicle to hit Moab. I really considered storing it because this seriously is one of the best cars I've owned. But then I'd be doing it the same disservice the original owner did when he stored it for 13 years. This car should be driven and enjoyed. Hey it would look great next to yours, you'd have a Georgia Tech thing going. You need a black one....

LOL me too. The wheels aren't pristine, but they are good. They do have some dings and smudges that the pics don't show, but I'm happy with them. This would be an outstanding car for anyone, turnkey, ready to go anywhere.

Thanks Tom, the next couple months are definitely different. Talk about prepping for a big change, but it's going to be a lot of fun. I just hope someone will buy this car and enjoy it the way I have.

Thanks! It's a new adventure for sure, but something we have been wanting to do. I'll keep driving it until it sells, but FYI I have a guy who is very interested right now and might get it next week. It will be a tough day when it goes, definitely one of the best cars I've owned.

Bump for the new year. I've got a couple of very interested parties, but no one has taken the leap yet. I would love to find a good home for my car because I don't like storage. But if it doesn't sell I will store it, and have a great ZR-1 waiting for me when we get off the road!

8cam good luck on the sale of your car. I managed to sell mine but it was not easy. I consigned it and it cost me 1500.00 in ebay fees, auction fees etc...etc.. professional photo shoot..etc... I was not the worst deal in my car life but my second worst deal. In my worst car deal fyi.. I lost 50k!!! Unfortunately the c4 zr-1 is not respected by car collectors and dont bring the money. If I had know that I would get so little I would have parted it out. My car was totally 100% in great working condition with refinished engine etc.... mint... If you get anything close to 17... take it. my advice to you.

Keep it!!! Voice of experience! When u get some motor home miles under your belt you will have a yearning for another z and most likely won't be able to replace yours for 17000! 6 months storage doesn't hurt a thing.

Problem is it won't be 6 months. We'll be on the road a minimum of 18 months to 2 years, and who knows maybe longer. There's so much of this country we want to see and it will take a while. Storing a car for that long just isn't good for it, but if it doesn't find a home then I'll find a place for it.

I have had a ZR-1 for 25 years.

I cannot recall ever feeling that my car was ever disrespected by anybody.
There was that C-5 Z06 that thought he would leave me in his wake way back on 02, but he quickly became educated about reality.

Low-balling happens regardless of which collector car you have, or for that matter, with any car.
Low-balling works because some sellers actually take the silly offers.
Me, I just smile and say, I'll take two more at that price!

If someone does not like or appreciate my car, that is their problem, not mine, as I really do not care what they might think.
I like nearly all cars, even if they are not cool. I just like cars.
I taught my son, back when he was 5, to never say anything bad about a car out loud, but rather wait and talk to me about it later.
I have met many, many grown ups who just don't get that simple rule, and feel compelled to voice their opinions of other people's cars, many times not knowing or maybe caring, that the owner is in ear-shot.
It's not my place to fix their stupidity, although I have over the years, told a few that my son knew better than that when he was 5.

ZR-1's were special to me from the beginning.
NOTHING will ever change that; Nothing.
But that is just me.

It is disrespectful when the general collector car community thinks that the zr-1's are not worth the money that they should be worth. I see thousands of cars not worthy of there lofty prices but the collector car community thinks otherwise and makes those 1972 porsche 911 (carmen ghias) worth so much more money than our zr-1's. A 1978 Smokey and the bandit trans am brings 35k with all of its 160 horse and its ridiculous girth but the public feels it has more value than our zr-1. The zr-1 is a extremely undervalued supercar but to most of the collector car community it is not. To me it is pure disrespect to the engineering feat and what it took to develop and produce this fantastic car.

As far as performance, I had a modded zr-1 and it ran very strong. Because it was modded it would walk away from a stock c5z. I now have a modded c5z and I can tell you it would take a big inch lt5 stroker to give it some competition. My zr-1 would make around 405 rwhp. My c5z makes 471 rwhp without a power adder. my goal is to add some induction work and put that total to 500 and call it a day.

At the end of the day, zr-1 and z06 are the monikers GM chose to put on its best performance cars. zr-1 was put on its most powerful street cars and the z06 was first used in 1963 as a pure track racer. Even the c5z is a track car favorite among race drivers. Most like it over the c6z because of its better balance and feel. I did feel my zr1 was very heavy around corners and now that I have a c5z to compare it too, it is no competition as to which car would be a better track car. Two very different cars but all part of the same lineage. Corvette performance.

You know maybe it just comes with age, or maybe it doesn't. But all this worrying about what the collector car people or hobby think about the C4 ZR-1 or any car is really immaterial IMO.
If you buy for investment, then that may be a different story. Any Corvette that I have purchased or currently own was and still is because I wanted that particular Vette to drive, enjoy, and learn about it as much as possible. Doesn't matter to me what others think or say about it. They are not driving or enjoying the Vette, I am. I purchased my ZR-1 because is was affordable for me and I have always wanted one. To me it is a piece of automotive history. My 74 BB Vert is the first BB I have owned, and I purchased because that is what i wanted, not because it may be worth a certain dollar amount or not.
And how does anyone feel that their particular vehicle is getting disrespect because it's not worth what they think it is supposed to be worth???
We all know that we don't have any control over that, the car market does, not the individual.
In the end any vehicle is just as worth what any buyer is willing to pay at that particular point in time.
Just engaging in a good debate, nothing more, nothing less..JMO

point taken. I did not buy my zr1 as an investment. I actually got it at a great price with about 25k in mods easy. Unfortunately for me I could not leave well enough alone and get an exhaust system, a aluminum fly wheel a engine refinish etc... and put another 10k. You would think I could at least get my original investment?? new rims, tires etc.. nope. I lost 15k. I am not a good car investor. I have always bought with my heart except once that I tried to make money without getting emotionally involved and I did make a fast 3k on a mint 1992 corvette. I treated it like a piece of meat and only thought of making money and it worked. I can make money on a car if I look at them like that but I must tell you it is no fun. I like to get emotionally involved with cars which is why I always lose money on them. I now have my last Corvette I will buy. Once it goes.. its over for me.

Now being retired, it is becoming a reality. Not to interested in additional mods on the Z, as the $$$ have being going to the 74. Although I will keep up with regular maintenance like as soon as tomorrow with the plenum pull. As long as the LT5 continues to run as good as it has or better, I am a happy guy.
Hope your Z06 is working out for you. and you have it for a very long time. As I always say, besides the C4 ZR-1, the C5 Z06 are both the buys of the decade.

Didn't mean to start a debate. But I do think the ZR-1 doesn't get the respect it deserves in the collector car world. However, I'm not a collector I'm a driver. And the ZR-1 is without a doubt one of the best-driving cars I have ever owned. From multi-hundred mile road trips, to autocrosses and track work, to running to Home Depot, it's a phenomenal multi-tasker.

Besides, as long as values stay low I'll be able to get another one in the not too distant future!

I will never forget your tree pollen pics. (I think it was tree pollen.) Please keep us filled in on your travels.
My Uncle got a 1983 coach about 10 years ago. It has the Detroit Diesel 8V-71.
He and my Aunt travel all across Canada and the USA. They really enjoy it, as I'm sure you will as well.

I just lived too far away and truck freight charges scared me away. This is the time to enjoy your life and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Enjoy in good health.

He and my Aunt travel all across Canada and the USA. They really enjoy it, as I'm sure you will as well.

It was my daily driver from day one until the day I sold it, with a little time off early on for maintenance items and the last month or so since we bought the coach. I've had lots of interesting daily drivers through the years, Porsches (911, 951, 928x2, 914x2), BMW (535, 525, M3), MINI JCW, several Rx-7s and Z-cars, Mercedes, Jeep and Subaru...and the ZR-1 just might be the best one of them all. It's at least tied with the 911, and a totally different car so it's hard to compare.

It says a lot that I owned and loved a Ferrari 308 GTB for six years, and I miss the ZR-1 more. :flag:
