Hey has anyone dealt with K & B products in Alpharetta GA ? I called them last week after talking to the ZR1 Specialist about having my ecm rebuilt . They said it takes 4-6 weeks , send it to us . So I sent it , they got the ecm on Monday , I get it back today with a note saying they can't test it , nor do they have parts for it at this time . Uuuuum whats wrong with this picture ?

Not surprising and never heard of them. Z ECMS are becoming hens teeth items that you can only find from a parted out Z. I have been told these CAN be repairable but not always. Not much help but it's the no so pretty truth. Did you contact Jerry ?
That's where I had my ECM rebuilt. The guy is definitely not very sociable but for me at least, it worked. He told me they have about a 2/3 success rate so it's a roll of the dice. If you didn't get charged then you're money ahead but you may have to find a new ECM. He actually send them to an ex corvette engineer who does the rebuild, which is why it takes so long. Lots of times it gets sent off, repair attempted, and it still fails. These things are getting old and fragile so no guarantees. I got lucky but I know a couple others who didn't.
You might ping Russ McBride on this forum. He's got a megasquirt running in his, probably the future for keeping these cars on the road.

I'm having the same trouble. It's been a few months now and no feedback on how this thing is going to work out. Meanwhile it sits. You would think that it would be straight forward whether it's fixable or. It and how?

Kurt White has one on Ebay but it has a core requirement. At least it has a price.

No idea.. All I know is not a lot of options unless a part out occurs. next to the DIS module truly the Achilles heal of the LT5. At least its possible to rebuild the ECM or go the mega quirt route I guess. Still not for the meek cost wise. GC

Well, just heard back that the ECM is back from the repairer, now lets hope she works anew!

Last I knew they were working out ALDL Issues, also it is listed 91-95 and there is to be a different 1990 part number.. I provided some ALDL INfo, but it seems this is a lower priority for them (and I understand, not many cars made, so not much sales potential there)
I have a feeling it will not be less than $1000.. which is unfortunate..

The ALDL issues were worked out. I believe the only thing that remained unsolved was the fuel mileage calculator and they weren't sure that would ever be solved.
There are two different part numbers. 90 and 91 and up. I couldn't get a great answer on the difference.
They have pricing. No, it isn't less than 1000. Where have you seen an aftermarket, laptop tuneable, application specific, preprogrammed ECU that controls 16 injectors for less than 1000? While I'm sure we could all wish for that, it's just not realistic. And the 1500-1800 dollar units are for engines like the LS where they are going to sell 5-10k units a year. Not 3-5.
Final price was to be 2500. I know I got a deal on mine because they were doing a run of them. I sure that could be arranged in the future.

As a side note, the DIY Auto Tune guys told me one of the challenges with their LT-5 ECU is the connectors needed to make it plug-n-play. They're no longer available new and they haven't been able to find anyone to make them for a reasonable cost. That means they have to get them from junk yards. Luckily, there were a few other '90's GM cars that use the same connectors (but not a lot - not that easy to find them in very good condition).

Perhaps you could see if those connectors fit into your LT-5's ECU. Or call DIY Auto Tune and ask them. If yes, they might like that information.

What are the most reputable rebuild places?

What are the most reputable rebuild places?I don't know, but if I had this question...
I'd be tempted to call one of our reputable builder/vendors, such as, Marc or Jerry. My hunch is they have investigated options and may know which ones offer the best results.

This is a stretch as I'm sure they have checked for connectors but I've used TERMINAL SUPPLY and MOUSER for OEM GM connectors in the past.

when I was querying them about the cmn I ask about connectors..
Their response:
We have at least worked out a way to source the connectors used, but it would be good if we found a way to buy them new. A lot of late '80s and early '90s GM products used the same connector.

I think the part they want is the large female piece that accepts the male plugs.

Correct the 4 main connectors.. I have 2 or 3 L98 ECMs with the same connectors

I searched 19152968 and came up with a few sites that claim to have them. This number came from Marc's site as a remanufactured unit. I don't know enough about these to know if this is really what we need for the correct ECM. Is anyone familiar with what this is? Rockauto.com also has a listing for the ECM.
Thanks,
Bill

If it is a number on Marc's site then it is correct. If I ordered from anywhere. I would pay the core fee until I knew I had the correct ECM in my possession and it worked..
