Lyndi and I are on our way to Canada heading for a final destination in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have planned a 28 day, 5100 mile trip, getting back to Westminster just in time for Corvettes at Carlisle.

The first part of the trip will take us to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/Newfoundland%20Trip%20First%20Half%20Map_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/Newfoundland%20Trip%20First%20Half%20Map_1.jpg.htm l)

We will take a ferry across from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. While we are there we will take a ferry over to Labrador, visit Gander and St John's, then take a ferry back to Nova Scotia:

The final phase of the road trip will take us to Acadia National Park and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area:

We hope you will join us for the ride.

On Tuesday morning we left Westminster, Maryland heading to Erie, Pennsylvania. For this trip, we are the most organized we have ever been. The trip preparations went smoothly and I am confident that we will have an enjoyable trip. Since this is only a ~5,000 mile trip, we will be doing more sight seeing and less days of long hours of driving.

The departure pic from our home. Lyndi is accepting volunteers to pull weeds while we are gone.

We crossed Pennsylvania heading northwest to Erie, PA. Along the way we enjoyed beautiful scenes of Pennsylvania farms and the rolling hills of the Alleghany Mountains:

Our first stop was Penn State University, my alma mater.

Here is the dorm that I lived in for 2 years, top floor second from the right:

The dorm rooms seemed a lot smaller than I remember and I was flashing back to being a freshman again:

We visited the Student Book Store and I found some great study aids:

Any visit to Penn State has to include a visit to the Creamery for an ice cream cone:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0091.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0091.jpg.html)

Continuing northwest, we stopped in Mercer, PA for a nice visit with Mike and Betty, Corvette enthusiasts who we met on the Mountain Run 4.

When we arrived in Erie we found a Tuesday Evening Cruise In. We parked next to a nice red 1993 convertible and enjoyed looking at the cars:

We drove out to Presque Isle for a view of Lake Erie. There is a wonderful State Park and views of the Lake were beautiful:

Jim, your return trip takes you right through my backyard in Concord NH. Let me know if there is anything you need while in the area, be it a garage to work on your car, a hot meal, or a quick beer along the road.
Safe travels, and as always, thanks for taking us along. - Steve

Safe travels to you and Lyndi, Jim. Like the rest of the Brotherhood, Linda and I will are looking forward to your log. With both of us having been raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, we'll be looking even more closely at the photos than usual. Glad you were able to drop in on Betty and Mike - class people!

You guys will love Quebec City!
When you get to the MA/NH border, you might consider going a few miles into MA to Essex
(Rt133) and check out Woodman's for lunch. They invented the fried clam!
Have a safe trip!

Jim,
Been quite a while since I posted here but have read your previous adventures. Live in Toronto but also have family in Halifax and Newfoundland. Felt I would mention a few things since I have travelled all the Canadian miles you are doing a couple times.
1) either before or after the Ferry you should consider making time to drive the Cabot Trail. Likely one of the top drives in North America and our Canadian version of the Pacific Coast Highway.
2) keep an eye on Ferry bookings this time of year. Can book up fast. A couple years ago we got stuck on the island when one ferry went out of service and within hours you couldn't book a return trip for 2 weeks. The alternative is to go standby but even that can result in 12-24 hours of sleeping in your car at a ferry dock until you get on.
3) great whale and bird watching options within 30 minutes of St John's
4) I believe there is still a Ferry from Nova Scotia to Maine if you are more interested in seeing the Western part of the Province
5) if you like a little more adventure there is excellent Zip Line at the Corner Brook ski hill.
That's a few ideas and look forward to the pictures.

Day 2 - We left Erie and drove east to Buffalo and then took I-190 north toward Niagara Falls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0054.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0054.jpg.html)

Along the way we found some interesting bridges. This Bascule Bridge is just like the one on my Lionel Train layout:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0059.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0059.jpg.html)

Then we found this center-pivot rotating bridge that not only crosses a river, but also the traffic lane:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0064.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0064.jpg.html)

This is the 299th Engineer Combat Battalion Memorial Bridge. It is a very graceful design and a pretty blue color:

Both Lyndi and I have never visited Niagara Falls before so we were very surprised by the visual and audible impact of the falls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0093.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0093.jpg.html)

We both agreed that we had to go up close and personal with the falls, so we took a trip on the Maid of the Mist:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0021.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0021.jpg.html)

We did get a little damp, but it was a lot of fun:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0146.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0146.jpg.html)

We celebrated with lunch at The Hard Rock Café:

After lunch, we drove across the border to Canada and headed for Toronto. It was a pleasant drive and the traffic was light until we got to Toronto. The late afternoon, downtown gridlock was terrible. We had to abandon plans to visit the St Lawrence Market. In stead we decided to walk to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO):

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0375.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0375.jpg.html)

This is one of the most striking art museums I have ever visited. We enjoyed the exhibition of works by Lawrence Harris, one of The Group of Seven artists form the first half of the 20th Century:

We just got back from NF 2 weeks ago and I saw that Bascule Bridge on 190 north and couldn't figure out what the heck it was.

I will be following your journey closely. The friend we were visiting in NH just mentioned coming back and taking the ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland next year.

Hi John,

Thank you for the advice. We drove the Cabot Trail in 2011 from east to west. This trip we will drive it from west to east.

I know what you mean about the ferry schedules. I had to revise some plans because I assumed that the schedules were the same every year. But I have reserved and confirmed all my ferry trips.

On Day 3 of our trip, visited the Toronto Zoo:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0044_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0044_1.jpg.html)

The big attractions at the zoo are two baby Panda cubs, the White Lion cubs, and the polar bear cub. The panda cubs are the first ever born in Canada. They are very cute and well cared for by their Mother:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0052_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0052_1.jpg.html)

The white lions are not albino lions, but a white species from Southern Africa:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0143_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0143_1.jpg.html)

All of the animal exhibits at the Toronto Zoo are very well designed. The animals were easy to observe and seemed to well adjusted to their habitats. I have never been this close to a cheetah before:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0347.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0347.jpg.html)

It was a real pleasure to watch this adult polar bear swimming under water. He was very playful:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0655.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0655.jpg.html)

Here is the polar bear cub getting some medicine:

The Toronto Zoo is the best zoo that Lyndi and I have visited. We were very impressed with the collection there and with the quality of the exhibits and habitats.

After visiting the Zoo, we drove east to Peterborough, Ontario to see the Peterborough Lift Lock. The Lift Lock is a very special lock on the Trent-Severn waterway that runs through Eastern Canada.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0316%202.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0316%202.jpg.html)

The lock was built about 100 years ago to raise and lower boats 65 feet to allow the building a canal past Peterborough. The lock consists of two basins that are moved vertically by large hydraulic rams in the ground under each basin.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0152.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0152.jpg.html)

Here is a view of the top of the lift lock:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0184.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0184.jpg.html)

While we were visiting the lock, we were thrilled to see the lock in action to convey a pleasure boat down to the lower canal:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0186.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0186.jpg.html)

Once the boat was in the upper basin a door is shut sealing the basin containing the water and boat. Then the weight of the upper basin is transferred to the lower basin through two hydraulic rams. One goes down and the other goes up:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0194.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0194.jpg.html)

to be continued...

QB93Z

After the lift completes the movement, the door on the lower basin is opened and the boat can sail out. The transfer took about 5 minutes.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0217.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0217.jpg.html)

The Lift Lock is used by pleasure boats and tour boats about 20 times a day in the summer. In the winter, the lower canal is used as a ice skating rink.

Just down stream from the Lift Lock is the next obstacle to travel on the waterway. A large swing bridge:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230%202.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230%202.jpg.html)

The swing bridge is a railroad bridge and we got to watch a train cross the bridge while the boat waited and then the bridge was operated to allow the boat to continue down stream.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0266.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0266.jpg.html)

After the train cleared the bridge, the crew used a very large wrench to manually disengage the locks that aligned the rails at each end of the bridge:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0282.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0282.jpg.html)

Then a relatively small electric drill was placed on a shaft in the center of the bridge to turn it:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0296.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0296.jpg.html)

Once the bridge was clear, the boat proceeded:

Thursday was a good day on the road. The weather was pleasant and we got to see some interesting things.

On Day 4 of our trip, we left Peterborough and drove east to Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada. The entire route was on Ontario Route 7, a rural 2-lane through numerous small cities and farmland. It was a pleasant drive, no too much traffic and plenty of beautiful scenery.

As you probably know, I like trains. So, in Havelock, ON we found a yellow CP Caboose on display:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0027.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0027.jpg.html)

We were not really sure about this sign, so we waited a while to see if there was any cross traffic:

Some parts of the route suffered from the shifting economy and faster modes of transportation. This Esso Gas Station had been abandoned for some time:

When we got to Ottawa, we parked at City Hall to see an art exhibit on display in the lobby. In front of City Hall RibFest was in full swing so we had some ribs and a beer.

Ottawa is a beautiful city. We enjoyed walking to all the downtown sights we had scheduled and it is easy to get around. We found the US Embassy:

Here is the Ministry of Defense Building, the equivalent of the Pentagon in Washington:

We went to the National Gallery of Canada:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0264.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0264.jpg.html)

The National Gallery is a very nice art gallery. The permanent collection
is impressive. We enjoyed the Canadian Artists of the 1910 to 1930's.

After the art gallery, we walked over to see the Canadian Parliament Building. It is very impressive, situated on a hill on the Ottawa River so there is nothing in view behind the building:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0424.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0424.jpg.html)

We even found some more locks:

These locks are on the Rideau Waterway that connects the Ottawa River with city of Kingston, ON on Lake Ontario. The locks are fairly small and are manually operated:

Day 5 of our trip continued our easterly trip across Canada. We drove from Ottawa to Montreal. The day was a little cooler and the sky was clear and blue. It was a nice drive. Southeastern Ontario has a lot of prosperous farms.

In Montreal we visited the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0068.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0068.jpg.html)

We specifically wanted to see the exhibit of Toulouse Lautrec's lithographs, and we were not disappointed. We also got to see an original of one of Lyndi's favorite posters, Chat Noir by Steinlen:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0109.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0109.jpg.html)

I liked a painting by Bouguereau:

There is a beautiful blown glass sculpture by Chuhuly in front of the building:

We visited the Old Toronto section of the city. The traffic wasn't as bad as we had experienced in Toronto, but we did get passed by a horse and carriage:

Day six of our trip was the drive from Montreal to Quebec. Once again the weather was perfect for a Sunday drive. We were heading east but this truck made us wonder where we were headed:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0001_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0001_1.jpg.html)

We took CA-40 to Quebec and then took CA-440 around Quebec to visit Montmorency Falls Park (Chute is Falls in French):

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0044_2.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0044_2.jpg.html)

The falls are accessible from three points. Above the falls on a bridge, beside the falls from the Maison Montmorency and from the bottom. We parked at the bottom and got a picture with the PurpleZ:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0056.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0056.jpg.html)

At the falls, a cable car is available to take a ride up then cliff to the Maison Montmorency:

We walked out to the base of the falls which are higher than Niagara Falls:

For even more fun there is a zip Line that runs across the top of the falls:

After enjoying the Falls, we drove for about 15 minutes back to downtown Quebec City. Our hotel is inside the walled area of Quebec City near the Chateau Frontenac. The downtown area of Quebec City is amazing. The buildings are all stone or brick. The city is easy to get around in and the compact downtown area is ideal for sightseeing on foot. We stopped in front of our hotel and unloaded from the street:

Jim/Landing make sure you go inside the Chateau Frontenac. My favourite hotel in Quebec City. If you have a chance take the Funicular to the lower town. Lastly outside of the walls is the oldest continually running store in North America. Oh yes, Tripler says make sure you have some French Fries. THEY ARE THE BEST

On Monday, our 7th day of the trip, we stayed in Quebec City for a second day. Our first adventure was to see the changing of the Regimental Guard at the Royal 22nd Regimental Headquarters at the Citadel of Quebec:

The 22nd Regiment is a Royal Regiment which means that the Queen of England has recognized their performance and presented the Regiment with a Goat:

Day 8: Today we left Quebec and headed east along the St Lawrence River. The plan for today was to drive about 130 miles and use the day to relax, see some lighthouses and do some "housekeeping". We left early and passed through the defensive wall that was built to defend Quebec:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0004.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0004.jpg.html)

The first stop was to get the car washed. After some searching, we found a touchless wash and got the PurpleZ shined up:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0040_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0040_1.jpg.html)

We crossed to the south side of the St Lawrence River and stopped in Levis to get a view of Quebec from across the river:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0110_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0110_1.jpg.html)

Instead of taking the Highway (QC-20), we drove along the coast on RT-132. After we left the Quebec metropolitan area the route was relatively flat and very agricultural:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0360.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0360.jpg.html)

We arrived at Riviere du Loup early in the afternoon to have time to do some laundry. We have perfected our luggage and packing system so that we can easily go eight days and then quickly get the laundry done. Instead of packing in suitcases, we now use small organizer bags to manage our clothing. Here is the weeks worth of clothing and the laundry supplies:

Day 9: We left Riviere du Loup and drove northeast along the shore of the St Lawrence River to Rimourski, QC to see the Point au Pere Lighthouse and the Canadian Submarine HMCS Onandaga SS-73:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0180.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0180.jpg.html)

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0298.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0298.jpg.html)

The HMCS Onandaga is a retired Canadian diesel electric submarine that served with distinction from 1965 to 2000. It is now a museum ship. Lyndi and I took a tour of the sub and found it to be in very good condition and well presented.

This is the Maneuvering Room where the electric motors that propel the submarine are controlled:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230.jpg.html)

The Commanding Officer's Stateroom is smaller than the stateroom on my submarine. But the wood work furnishing are a nice touch that we didn't have on US submarines:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0253.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0253.jpg.html)

In the Control Room, I brought back some memories with a turn around the periscope:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0258.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0258.jpg.html)

The HMCS Onandaga museum was very nice but I had two disappointments. There is no connection at the display with the submariners that served on the ship. None were named and there isn't any log or records of the crews. Secondly, there has been an attempt to broaden the audience for the museum by making a connection to the "Yellow Submarine" made popular in a Beatles song. The bow of the HMCS Onondaga has been painted with cartoon characters and a peace symbol.

The western shore of Cape Breton Island is very scenic. There are many small coves and harbors, home to numerous fishing and excursion boats:

The Cabot Trail is one of the most beautiful and scenic routes I have driven. This was our second time to do the drive and we still were awed by the scenery. The road is in fairly good condition, with some maintenance in progress to upgrade the road. There are numerous pull outs and over looks. It is worth the trip to Nova Scotia to make the drive.

We stopped at an Information Station for brochures and I found a parking space appropriate for the ZR-1:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/File%20Aug%2005%2020%2006%2031.jpeg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/File%20Aug%2005%2020%2006%2031.jpeg.html)

We have driven 2,500 miles on this trip so far and the PurpleZ is performing flawlessly. We have gotten many nice comments about the ZR-1 from people we have met. There are very few Corvettes on the road here.

Day 9: We left Riviere du Loup and drove northeast along the shore of the St Lawrence River to Rimourski, QC to see the Point au Pere Lighthouse and the Canadian Submarine HMCS Onandaga SS-73:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0180.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0180.jpg.html)

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0298.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0298.jpg.html)

The HMCS Onandaga is a retired Canadian diesel electric submarine that served with distinction from 1965 to 2000. It is now a museum ship. Lyndi and I took a tour of the sub and found it to be in very good condition and well presented.

This is the Maneuvering Room where the electric motors that propel the submarine are controlled:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0230.jpg.html)

The Commanding Officer's Stateroom is smaller than the stateroom on my submarine. But the wood work furnishing are a nice touch that we didn't have on US submarines:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0253.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0253.jpg.html)

In the Control Room, I brought back some memories with a turn around the periscope:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0258.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0258.jpg.html)

The HMCS Onandaga museum was very nice but I had two disappointments. There is no connection at the display with the submariners that served on the ship. None were named and there isn't any log or records of the crews. Secondly, there has been an attempt to broaden the audience for the museum by making a connection to the "Yellow Submarine" made popular in a Beatles song. The bow of the HMCS Onondaga has been painted with cartoon characters and a peace symbol.

to be continued....

I live in Rimouski and I enjoyed your pictures! Funny to see another ZR-1 in Rimouski! The painting on the Onondaga is beyond stupid I totally agree with you. It didn't need that paint.

Great pictures though, I asked some local car guys if they saw you and nobody seems to have spotted you...

We travelled from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland on the Marine Atlantic ferry MV Leif Ericson. The boarding process was very easy:

On the ferry there were 5 levels for parking vehicles. 2 of the levels are below the main deck. After the cars drive down the ramp, the ramp is raised and cars parked on top:

Day 13: For our first day in Newfoundland we started out by driving east from Port aux Basque to see the oldest granite construction lighthouse. The terrain on the southern coast of Newfoundland is amazing. There is only a small amount of scrub plants and lots of rock. There are many standing pools of water:

Jim, on these long trips like this and Alaska how much do you preplan and how much is just off the cuff? Every time we plan one out we end up missing stuff because we have to get somewhere. We always do better just winging it.

Hi Dave, our trips are very carefully and completely planned. Back in 2009, Lyndi and I went on a trip where we tried to ad lib on the go. It did not work out well for us. The burden on the non-driver, Lyndi, to search for a hotel or attraction and then contact for reservations while we were traveling was too hard. We do better when we have a firm, planned structure. Typically, I will program the Pioneer GPS with the destination for the day and then add waypoints for the planned attractions. Then we can use the calculated arrival time at the hotel to evaluate if we have time to take a "add on" attraction.

A few times we have changed hotel reservations when we come up with something we want to add. We may do that on this trip because we have been talking to fellow travelers we meet on the road, and we have some come up with some new "must see" things.

On Monday, Day 14, our second day at Gros Morne National Park, we started the day with a visit to the Tablelands. This large geological feature is very unique. About 450 million years ago the forces of plate tectonics caused the continent of ancient North America to collide with Gondwana. As the two plates squeezed together, the Appalachian mountains were formed and a portion of the earth's mantle was pushed above the Earth's crust in the process. The mantle is usually deep below the crust. After millions of years of erosion, the rocks of Tableland were exposed.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0265.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0265.jpg.html)

The rocks of the Tablelands area were formed in the earth's mantle and have a different chemical composition than rocks formed in the crust. The result is that the Tablelands rocks do not support the plants that thrive on the surrounding mountains. The characteristic ochre-color rocks remain seemingly barren.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0268.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0268.jpg.html)

We left the Tablelands and drove back toward the bay:

Next we drove north of Rocky Harbor to see the amazing mountain formations of the Western Stream Pond area. We took a 3-kilometer hike across a marshy area to get to the excursion boat dock:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0600.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0600.jpg.html)

The tour boat took us across the Western Stream Pond to see the canyons formed by the glaciers that shaped the Gros Morne mountain areas:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0633.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0633.jpg.html)

The mountains that surround the pond are up to 2000 feet tall and the pond is about 600 feet deep. The glacial period that formed the pond was about 15,000 years ago, and all the glaciers were gone about 9,000 years ago. The lake was originally a fiord, but when the glaciers melted, the island of Newfoundland rose and a land bridge formed isolating the pond from the sea. The pond is now 30' above sea level.

Along the shore line we discovered a bear foraging:

The crossing from Newfoundland to Labrador (really the eastern edge of Quebec where then terminal is) took about 1.5 hours and was very smooth. We ate lunch on board and relaxed. Upon arrival at Blanc-Sablon the unloading started, but they directed me to move to the opposite side while some heavier trucks and busses were unloaded. The crew wanted to raise the vessel a little to get a better angle on the ramp before I drove off:

You may be wondering who took the pictures of the ZR-1 being unloaded. Lyndi volunteered to disembark with the walk-on passengers so she could take the pictures.

After a quick look around at the eastern-most point in Quebec Provence, we crossed into Labrador:

Our arrival in Labrador was one of the high points for this road trip. After 15 months of planning and 3,000 miles of driving we accomplished a major goal to reach such a remote place in a ZR-1.

After a gray and rainy day getting to Labrador, Day 16 dawned with absolutely beautiful weather:

As we were getting ready to load the Z, Lyndi took a moment to photograph what we carry in and out of the hotel each day. We use one backpack each, the camera bag, a case for two notebook computers, and a cooler to load with beverages for the next day. My backpack holds all the electronic components:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0006.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0006.jpg.html)

We left our hotel in West St Modest, NL and drove north on the Trans Labrador Highway to Red Bay, a small cove village on the coast of Labrador.

The significance of Red Bay to us is that it is the end of the pavement. All travel north of Red Bay is on gravel. All the way for 486 miles. Almost all the way to Goose Bay. Since our ZR-1 was not set up to drive 486 miles of gravel, we turned back and headed for the ferry to return to Newfoundland:

On the way south we stopped at Point Armour Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in Canada:

We arrived back at the Marine Atlantic Ferry terminal in time to watch a pallet of frozen herring that was about to be loaded onto a truck get a close inspection by the sea gulls:

The ferry was loaded and underway without incident and once again we relaxed to watch the water:

Back on Newfoundland, we drove north up the west coast. We passed a lot of uninterrupted forest, rocky coastline and small villages:

The character of the terrain changed several times demonstrating the diversity of Newfoundland:

My last post for Wednesday got lost so I will repeat it. After the ferry ride from Labrador and the 85 mile drive to the north end of Newfoundland's western peninsula we visited L'Anse aux Meadows, the site of a Viking settlement dating to about 1000 AD.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0497.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0497.jpg.html)

The Vikings had well established settlements in western Greenland under the leadership of Leif Ericson. A group of Vikings sailed west and south and found a protected harbor with available wood, fishing, a bog, and animals to trap. They built a settlement on the north tip of what is now Newfoundland.

Archeological evidence has been gathered at the site since it was discovered in 1963. The evidence is very compelling that the Europeans settled in North America 490 years before Columbus sailed.

We saw the remains of many buildings. Each was well labeled and explained. There are homes, ship repair, forges, furnaces, carpentry and others. There were also reconstructions of the buildings that presented a good example of the settlement.

We awoke on day 17 to a light rain.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0027_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0027_1.jpg.html)

Since today was our chance to try and see an iceberg we checked IcebergFinder.com and decided to drive to St Anthony, NL and see if any tour boats had tours to see a berg.

St Anthony is on the eastern side of the tip of the peninsula:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0033.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0033.jpg.html)

Our first stop was to see Fog Point Light House. The rain had stopped, but the day was still gray:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0056_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0056_1.jpg.html)

After Lyndi photographed the lighthouse, she turned to an old stone building and the shoreline behind it. In the shot she noticed she had found the iceberg at the far end of the harbor.:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0073_2.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0073_2.jpg.html)

The small ice berg is all that is left of what is likely the last berg of the season. We drove along the south side of the harbor and got some distant views of the ice berg:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0169.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0169.jpg.html)

As we circled the harbor, we got a photo of this fishing boat departing the harbor:

We got a shot with the Z and the ice berg:

We circled the harbor and went to a side road to St Anthony's Bight, the closest access to the harbor. We found the iceberg again:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0426.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0426.jpg.html)

We found a trail and walked to the shoreline for our best view:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0503.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0503.jpg.html)

We met another group that we have seen twice before as our paths crossed on the island. Lyndi convinced the children that they could walk out and get pieces of the ice:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0481.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0481.jpg.html)

The kids presented me with a piece of the ice and I did what I do and held a training session about glacial ice:

I also placed a few of the ice chips in a small bottle to save for my collection of exotic water. It will be proudly displayed next to the water I have from under the ice cap at the North Pole:

We left St Anthony and drove 220 miles back down the peninsula to Rocky Harbor. Along the way, we stopped at Arches Provincial Park:

While we were in St Anthony, we discovered that the rear tires of the ZR-1 are having very accelerated thread wear on the rear tires. My assessment is that we will not be able to drive the rest of the trip on these tires.

I do not know the cause of the wear yet. It is not from burn outs at lights, I have been driving very conservatively.

We determined that there are no 315/35/17 tires of any brand in Newfoundland. We searched Nova Scotia and discovered that there are also no tires in Nova Scotia. The best I could find was a 2 week delivery of Goodyear tires to a tire store in Halifax. We searched the US and bought Sumitomas from TireRack for rapid shipment to a tire store in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

We will complete our plan for seeing Newfoundland, take the ferry back to North Sydney and then wait in Sydney for the tires. If the tires arrive as scheduled, we will be able to catch up to our original plan.

The tire wear affects both rear tires with a little more wear on the right side. The wear is uniform across the left tire and slightly more on the outer edge of the right tire. All tire pressures are proper.

I replaced both rear wheel bearings last spring and got a 4-wheel alignment at that time.

Any ideas about what I should check for when I get the new tires install will be appreciated.

Jim what is that building exactly? And how was it constructed? Looks really interesting I've never seen one like that...

The buildings are interesting. The walls are constructed of blocks of peat cut from a bog. They are composed of roots and twigs embedded in a peat moss-like material. There is an interior frame of logs about 5 inches in diameter, with an arched overhead that supports a wooden mat of sticks and branches, then soil and grass. There are wooden plank doors that are mounted on a pole that twists in a rock carved with a shallow dish shape.

There are vents at the top for interior fire pits. Some of the "craft" buildings had a roof vent that could be closed. The inside is dark because there are no windows. They used shallow stone bowls to burn lard or tallow for light.

The sleeping platforms are against the walls and the central space was used for living and working space.

The guides said that the buildings will not last more that about 25 years without rebuilding. At L'Anse aux Meadows there is no archeological evidence that the buildings were rebuilt. This creates a limit on how long the settlement was used.

The large building Lyndi is in front of, could house 30 people.

Good news! We found a tire dealer in Deer Lake, NL that took the time to figure out what we needed and found an acceptable substitute tire that will get us to Sydney, NS safely. Our new tires should be there when we get there.

Very special thanks to Simmons Tire in Deer Lake, NL

Friday, Day 18: We started the day by reclaiming a Nikon Camera battery charger that we let in our cabin by mistake two days ago. Luckily, the cleaning staff had found the charger and our itinerary took us past the cabins again.

We drove east to Deer Lake to get our tire problem solved. Andy Simmons, the owner of Simmons Tire Company did everything he could for us. First we tried a possible substitute tire on one of my rims, but the rim was too wide for the tire. Next he found some standard size rims and some discontinued tires that met our needs. They don't look very good on the ZR-1, but they will get us back on the road and I will be able to drive to Sydney, NS without risk of a blowout.

The issue then became: Could we fit my rear rims in to the car with all out luggage and stuff?

Well, we did it. Because we use the small zipper bags for our clothes, we were able to put the two rims in the back and then fit everything we had in and around them. The tire crew was amazed.

Here is the result: (Caution, the image below may be disturbing to ZR-1 fans.)

Back on the road, we headed east toward Gander in the interior of Newfoundland. The terrain was hilly with pines, fir, and birch trees. There were still some marshy areas. We traveled on TCH:

TCH-1 across Newfoundland is primarily a two lane road with many passing lanes. The road is in good condition:

Gander's primary commerce is related to the international airport. The population is about 11,000 people. We found the people to be friendly and welcoming. During World War II, more than 20,000 military aircraft used Gander as a refueling stop on the way to Great Britain for the war effort.

We visited the Aircraft Museum and enjoyed the exhibits.

I'd bet the weight in the rear is changing the suspension geometry...effectively rendering an out of alignment situation.

BMW would place weights in the car to align my M-5. You may consider leaving it loaded to check alignment--I bet it'll be off. Here's why I say this: when I installed coilovers & lowered the car it required a significant adjustment.

My suggestion - Have the car aligned with the normal amount of "stuff" that you have in your Z on a daily basis not with your trip gear. If you do it fully loaded with all your trip items you are setting up an artificial situation which will throw the alignment off when you remove the load. Unless what you are carrying in your Z is in excess of the suggested weight that the car should carry an alignment done when the car is empty should not affect the alignment or suspension. If it is I would say it is an indicator of a larger problem.

Racinfan83

This is an "in general" observation - not that I know about Vette alignment in general. If you change ride height you change alignment. If your gear etc is lowering the ride height - then you are changing geometry. I would think it would change the rear geometry on a independent suspension vehicle just as it changes the front geometry on a regular vehicle. For instance I just put 3/4 ton leafs and coils on my 1/2 ton 4x4 solid axle truck. The change in height created a toe issue that had to be realigned. I have had other vehicles I have "jacked up" in the rear (muscle car days) and every time I had to change front alignment because the added weight to the front changed the alignment. I would leave most or all of your travel gear in the car. You didn't have an issue with it until this trip right? So either something moved that shouldn't have or the added weight is affecting it.... Day 19, Saturday. We continued our drive on Trans Canadian Highway 1, going east towards St John's, NL. We took a side trip up the Bonavista Peninsula to see the north coast.

The coastal area around Bonavista is the most rugged, steep and rocky we have seen. Obviously more recent geological forces this area:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0598_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0598_1.jpg.html)

The lighthouse at Cape Bonavista is a much larger structure than we have seen before:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0548.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0548.jpg.html)

While we were at the cape we discovered a small colony of Puffins on the nearby rock:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0692.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0692.jpg.html)

While we were watching the Puffins, Lyndi spotted a whale broaching further out in the ocean:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0818.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0818.jpg.html)

We had a nice lunch of Fish cakes and fries at a local eatery. Fish cakes are made with chunks of Cod and mashed potatoes and then lightly fried. We told the owner that we wanted to split a three fish cake meal. She gave us four fish cakes and enough fries to fee an army. It was very good.

We returned to the Highway and continued our 210 mile drive to the east coast. We stopped south of St John's, at Cape Spear. The original lighthouse at Cape Spear has been replaced with a smaller tower and the original has been restored.

Cape Spear is the furthest east point in North America.

We celebrated our last stop in Newfoundland at the hotel lounge and some Iceberg Beers. Iceberg Beer is made for "20,000 year old glacial water":

I doubt some travel luggage would change alignment. Get 4 wooden yard sticks and check toe with and without the luggage. Something must have slipped or moved in the original adjustment or the original adjustment was way off. Also check camber when you are at it for each wheel on a level surface. Check both front and rear wheels.

Good points . perhaps adjustment bolts were not tightened during the alignment ...Or there alignment machine was way off ...

I believe that if I were to do a trip like "QB93Z" Jim & Lyndi and if I had a relationship with an alignment facility I'd load it up similar to the anticipated load and check the alignment before I left.

I'd think what might be interesting for Jim to do NOW is get the car scaled with what's "loaded" NOW including he and Lyndi. Important? I'd think maybe so.

Upon return I think you have the shop (if you've a relationship) check the alignment while it's still loaded OR simulate the weight reflected on the scale report.

Jim's familiar with all of the suspension components so I believe you just eyeball everything and in the future maybe scribe the camber eccentrics for a very easy visual if you wanted.

****

I'd also think that maybe someone in "the inner circle" edit this thread and move the related comments to maybe a separate thread and leave "THE TRIP" alone. I resisted posting to it until I saw many others doing it.

The right rear tire had 1'16 tread remaining with more wear on the outside half. The left rear tire had 1/8 tread left with more wear on the inside half.

Jim
Strange wear patterns ... not indicative of out-of-spec toe-in or camber.
Probably each side has its own out-of-spec alignment. Factory alignment specs are based on an empty vehicle with a full (I think) tank of gas.
I think the allowed load is two 150# passengers and 150# of luggage,
so if you are significantly over that weight, some abnormal tire wear could be expected. When you get back home, have the alignment checked and post the numbers so we can take a look.

Happy trails to you ...

So if the wear is that way , would that not mean the back is not following the front in a straight line ? Just a my 3 cents ...

Oh and just amazing pictures also ...

Day 20: We spent the day sight seeing in St John's and the surrounding area.

St John's is a nice city. We felt comfortable visiting the urban areas and the people are friendly. Tourism is a big part of St John's economy.
There are many areas of St John's that are painted bright colors, a pleasant décor:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0017.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0017.jpg.html)

Another strong economic influence is the oil industry support services. A large part of the water front area is dedicated to the support ships:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0086_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0086_1.jpg.html)

The support ships were busy, even on Sunday morning. We watched the MV Atlantic Hawk get underway and head out to sea:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0106.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0106.jpg.html)

We drove out to the north side of the harbor, up onto the highest ground surrounding the harbor to Signal Hill:

The view of St John's harbor from Signal Hill is stunning:

Across the harbor entrance from Signal Hill, on the southern coast of the harbor is Amherst Lighthouse:

Just north of the downtown area of St John's is a small bay known as Quidi Vidi. It is a picturesque fishing village. We watched several local fisherman cleaning the morning catch to the delight of the seagulls:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0643.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0643.jpg.html)

The area is also home to the Quidi Vidi Brewery, the brewery that makes Iceberg Beer:

After lunch, we drove about 30 minutes south of St John's to Bay Bulls to board a Whale and Puffin Tour Ship:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0983.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0983.jpg.html)

In Bay Bull Harbor we saw more oil industry support services. A large support ship, the MV Seven Waves was loading equipment:

As we left the harbor on our tour boat, we had a wonderful view of the rocky coast:

Along the coast near Bay Bulls, the rock formations clearly show the result of the forces that shape the land:

The tour boat took us just down the coast to the Witless Bay Islands Preserve. The three protected sea bird breeding islands are home to an estimated one half million birds of many different species. Our interest was the Puffins:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0186_2.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0186_2.jpg.html)

Lyndi caught this Puffin on the water between dives under the water to catch fish to take back to the chick on the island:

After circumnavigating Witless Island, we set out to look for the whales that are commonly found feeding near the coast. We didn't find any whales but we did see a group of White Side Dolphins:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0714.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0714.jpg.html)

After a busy afternoon on the high seas, we returned to our hotel to relax. For our last day in Newfoundland, I booked a deluxe suite at the downtown Marriott. we found out how deluxe when I went to the ice machine:

Glad to see you made it to my old hometown (St. John's) safely, Jim and Lyndi. I wish I were still there to host you. When you started this trip, I envisioned a picture of the purple Zee in front of the Cabot Tower on Signal Hill; I didn't expect it to have black, rear wheels. Compliments to you both for persevering and carrying on - safely! You mentioned Quidi Vidi village - you just missed the oldest sporting event in North America there - the St. John's regatta, by a week. The locals will be happy to share the highlights of the 2016 edition. If you get a chance, you should have a drink on George Street too; it's an iconic social mecca for Canadians visiting "the Rock".

Look forward to more of your exploits.

Jim

I love my Sumitomas....Very smooth and quiet tire. Not the best for hooking up any kind of traction, but great road tire. I love the pictures, especially of the submarine. That thing is HUGE!! I had no idea.....I've seen an aircraft carrier in person, but wow that is crazy!!

I finally have a chance to catch up on posting some photos. Getting to the ferry and then getting the tires replaced and aligned kept us pretty busy.

So stepping back a little, Day 21, Monday, was our last day in St John's, NL. We took a drive along the water front and noticed a new arrival since the day before. The USNS Zeus:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0037.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0037.jpg.html)

The Zeus is a Navy owned, contractor operated cable laying ship. It was built in 1984 and is a one of a kind ship. We drove down to the waterfront to see if we could get a better look. We parked near the ships and walked to the Zeus. Security was in place so we couldn't get very close, but we were looking at another ship nearby, the MV Strait Signet:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0147.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0147.jpg.html)

A crew member invited us aboard to talk and we accepted:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0049.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0049.jpg.html)

As we talked, he said that the Strait Signet used to be a US Navy ship called USNS Sub Sig II:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0116.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0116.jpg.html)

He said that there were still some photos of the submarines the Sub Sig II had worked with on display in the crew's mess. We got a tour of the ship. Here is the Galley:

In the Crew's Mess there were a collection of pictures of US Navy submarines. It was an amazing collection. There were two sister ships of the subs that I was XO and CO of:

There was the USS Buffalo that I road for exercises out of Pearl Harbor in 1987:

There was the USS New York City which my brother Rich was Engineer on in the 80's.

There was a picture of a test launch of a Poseidon Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0088.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0088.jpg.html)

There was a plaque for the USS Batfish, a sub I had orders to in 1979, but the orders got changed.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0094.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0094.jpg.html)

The Sub Sig II was navy owned and operated by Raytheon to monitor the acoustic signature of US Submarines for research purposes and to verify the submarine was quiet enough to deploy. The Sub Sig II also was a support ship for the Navy submerged missile launches.

After our tour, we were able to get a picture of the bow of the Zeus:

Earlier in the morning we had watched a container ship enter the harbor. We found the wharf where it was being unloaded:

We drove around to the south side of St John's harbor for a last look:

Bidding farewell to St John's, we drove 85 miles across the Avalon Peninsula to the Maritime Atlantic Ferry terminal in Argentia, NL.

We stopped at Castle Hill to see the remains of the fortifications that were built over the years to defend the important fishing grounds and shore areas:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0427_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0427_1.jpg.html)

On the high ground overlooking the present day town of Placentia, the remains of several fortifications are visible. The first construction date from 1693. By the early 19th century, the forts became irrelevant and they decayed.

On Day 22, Tuesday, we arrived in North Sydney, NS. The process of unloading the cars and trucks was very efficient:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0109_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0109_1.jpg.html)

We drove directly to Breton Tire Company, the shop that was coordinating with us to receive shipment of the Tire Rack tires. Breton Tire was not a fancy tire store. In fact we were initially worried that the shop couldn't handle the job. But my fears we put aside after meeting the mechanics and noting that the Sydney Police Department uses Breton Tire.

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0133.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0133.jpg.html)

The tires were delivered by UPS at about the same time we got there. Also a truck with 1800 tires for the shop's inventory arrived. They told us they would have to unload the truck before working on the ZR-1. So we went sightseeing until after lunch:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0236.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0236.jpg.html)

I have to express our heart-felt thanks to Bill, John, Jason, JB and Dawn for everything they did to get the tires on and aligned so we could get back on the road.

On Day 23, We drove 387 miles from Sydney, NS to Saint John, NB. It rained all day, sometimes fairly hard. The new Sumitomo tires did fine in the rain.

In order to get the tire problem resolved, we altered our itinerary to visit Halifax, NS and then take a ferry from Digby to Saint John. Since we didn't have time to drive to Halifax, we had to cancel the Ferry trip.

We drove the Scenic Route around Schoodic Point. Most of the route is one way with plenty of room to stop and look at the rocks and the water:

The water crashing on the rocks was hypnotic:

And after each wave was a waterfall:

One of the fascinating aspects of the coastal rocks of Schoodic point is their geological history. The main body of rock is Schoodic granite, the light tan colored rock. After the granite layers were formed, the area was subject to volcanic forces that cracked the overlaying granite. Lava flowed upward filling the cracks with rock that was darker and softer than the Schoodic Granite. As the rocked aged and weathered, the softer rock eroded faster leaving grooves in the coastline:

As Lyndi was photographing the waves crashing on the rocks, she spotted a seal watching us. The seal hung around for a while then dove and disappeared:

As the tide came in and the swells picked up, the waves became more dramatic:

The seagulls seemed used to the visitors and were happy to pose for the camera:

Wonderful! I do so appreciate you two taking me (us) along on your trips!

Glad the "trip fairy" was watching over your tire issue. (Gonna be interesting to know what caused that unusual wear pattern!)

See you in a week at Carlisle!!

Jim, your return trip takes you right through my backyard in Concord NH. Let me know if there is anything you need while in the area, be it a garage to work on your car, a hot meal, or a quick beer along the road.
Safe travels, and as always, thanks for taking us along. - Steve

Steve, we would like to stop and see you if possible. I will figure out our ETA this evening and let you know. I forgot to add: Saturday.

Saturday, like tomorrow?
Let me know, we're around. You're welcome to crash here, we have a vacant apartment over the garage currently. It has it's own bath and kitchen.
Or, we can meet on the road for pizza and beer.
I have a lift here if you need anything on the car. I've got amsoil if you want to throw an oil change at it.
Plenty of Adams stuff if you want to wash it.
You name it, we'll make it happen.

Day 25 was our second day in Bar Harbor, at Acadia National Park. We got to the park early to get ahead of the crowds. The morning mist revealed a cruise ship in the distance among the islands:

We drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point in the Park with wonderful views in all directions.

Hello from the peak:

We got another view of the cruise ship in the water near Bar Harbor:

Next we visited Sand Beach, one of the few places where there is a sandy coastline. It is a very nice beach, well sheltered by rocky cliffs, and people were enjoying the sand, sun and water:

Day 26 was a travel day for us. We drove from Bar Harbor, Maine to Brattleboro, Vermont, about 350 miles. The weather was hazy along the coast when we left Maine but was clear and hotter as we headed inland. Part of the trip was on the very familiar I-95, a clear signal that we are on the homeward bound part of the trip.

We enjoyed stopping in Concord, New Hampshire and meet up with another Forum member "efnfast":

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0036.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0036.jpg.html)

It was a pleasure to have lunch with Steve and Terry. Thanks for the hospitality:

We then crossed the Connecticut River into Vermont:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0040_2.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0040_2.jpg.html)

Brattleboro, VT is a nice small town. The downtown area is well preserved and there has been a lot of restoration. All of the stores are occupied and there are several upscale areas. One of the best collections of art by local artists we have seen was at the Vermont Artisan Designs Gallery:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0049_1.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0049_1.jpg.html)

We visited the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center which is in the original Union Station building:

http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0058.jpg (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/QB93Z/media/2016%20Newfoundland%20Trip/DSC_0058.jpg.html)

I liked the sculpture that was in front of the museum. I think one of teses will fit the rear wheel hub nut:

Day 27 - Back Home.

We left Brattleboro early on Sunday and drove to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on the New Jersey - Pennsylvania border. After looking around, we decided to cancel our hotel reservation and head for home. We drove another 200 miles and got back to Westminster at 6:30 PM.

The kitties are glad to see us and everything is fine.

The trip over all was 27 days, 6,036 miles, 7 states, 6 Canadian Provinces.

My wife is an incredible "scrapper" (maker of scrapbooks). She has done several of our notable trips and they are just a joy to share with friends & family. Great way to organize photos & mementos with commentary.

I see visions of scrapbooks with all of your trips. Already organized in chronological order, with photos & narrative by way of your forum travel threads. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Congratulations on another successful Jim & Lyndi ZR-1 road trip! I firmly believe you own the record for the most and longest ZR-1 road trips.

Jim - were you able to determine why your tires wore out so quickly? I noticed you said they did an "alignment" when they put your new ones on - was it off somehow that caused it?

Jim - were you able to determine why your tires wore out so quickly? I noticed you said they did an "alignment" when they put your new ones on - was it off somehow that caused it?

The shop that did the alignment had to adjust rear toe in and left chamber angle. However, neither one was grossly misaligned.

I noticed (after I was hypersensitive) that the rear end may not be allowing rear wheel differential rotation on sharp turns. This may happen all the time and would cause abnormal tire wear in normal driving conditions.

I plan to replace the oil in the differential and add the correct GM anti-slip additive, then evaluate the tire wear over time.
