Comments on My First Time Behind the Wheel of a ZR-1
When we initially went to view the car, Tripler took it out with the owner as he had far more experience with the C4 configuration having raced them back in the late Eighties. So, it wasn't until we picked up the car today that I actually got behind the wheel for the first time.
O.k. no eye-rolling please, but I literally burst into tears as I headed down the road for the first time and started putting her through the gears. It was the sound that got to me more than the power, etc., it was wonderful. As I noted in my first post we have been working on getting a Z for 3 years and there were times when I never thought it would happen.
On the highway it was magic. It was everything I thought it would be and more. It is so easy to drive. I am blessed that I am one of those people who can just jump behind the wheel of pretty much any vehicle and feel comfortable, but this was amazing.
No doubt about it - this car is a beast.
I Love It!!!

Welcome! The Z is a fun car for sure. I just kinda ended up with mine in a trade for a 71 SS Nova I had. Not much research, just a "Hey would you trade your Nova straight up for this" kinda deal. Glad I did for sure!
Wish I could go to BG this year (Or any year for that matter  ), but lack of $ and time off work means not this year either. Would be great to meet you. I have some good friends in Keswick, Ontario. Haven't been up to see them in 4 years...

Congratulations indeed from another Canuck. Hope to see you in Bowling Green in May; it's a great way to meet fellow ZR-1 owners and share the passion.

Today we drive the car down the highway for a bit to use up old fuel and add some new stuff . Hoping to go through 2 tanks which I am sure we will do easily . Doing a stop and go highway run first heading east , then a westward 2 hr freeway run back home .

Well I was so surprised . That car gets amazing gas mileage . I think we were able to at least use up one tank and a bit more of fuel . We were babying the car tho because we are ZR-1 newbs lol . A few more drives and I think I'll get the hang of it . All that rubber really moves the car around . I settled on Sport being the best all round setting for highway and street driving .
I have only ever driven 4 and 5 speed transmissions and they were all Honda's / Hyundai's and Susuki's so bit of a huge difference right there . The visual out of the car is quite something . I was going to install a backup camera but there is no need . Backing up is quite easy and there are literally no blind spots with this vehicle . The last C4 I drove had a roll cage in it so with a cage not being there I was very impressed with line of site .
Other than that the drive was great . Some 2 lane roads to our destination and home via the 401 . Kinda tired now . Probably from the excitement of being in a ZR-1 and not from the drive lol ...

Congrats on the new to you Beast!! Everyone knows that the Polo Green ones are the fastest :) I babied mine for the first couple of drives as well. But then said to myself, you gotta exercise those secondaries, and stretch her legs now and then. Every time I get in mine I smile.....Welcome to the club and congrats on the beautiful Z. You will find people turn their heads, pull even with you on the highway to get a look. Even pumping gas you will get " awesome Corvette or is that really a ZR-1?"

Greens are the fastest eh ! I knew it ;) Awesome ...
I did my first little tuneup to the car just a few days before we picked it up . The usual culprit of the torn gas fill location boot . Very easy to do but I was so nervous , my hands were shaking because I was actually working on a ZR-1 . A very simple task . 4 screws , lift off the fill lid , remove the torn ruuber fill boot , install new one and not forget drain hose to remove rain water so as not to go inside the fuel filler . There was a little bit of rust around the fuel gauge/filtre bolt assembly so I laced it with some WD40 and let that soak in a bit before I placed the new rubber ...

I installed our Mark Haibeck chip 2 days ago that we won at the NCM auction and wow !!! What a difference . It starts much smoother now and idles smoother also . Easy peasy to install after a short chat with Mark . All 16 injectors on startup . Loved seeing the full key light on without touching it . Thanks again Mark for building this awesome chip .

Beeeeautiful car!! Des need not be concerned about getting teary-eyed behind the wheel. That happens, along with a good case of permagrin!:dancing
Gotta Q about the chip. Did you have to tie the secondary Port Throttles (SPT) open, or does the chip simply switch to FULL ENGINE POWER and open them on start-up?

Hi Paul: It opens them on start up. The "Full" light comes on immediately.;)

Paul, 91 and later are different from our 90 cars.. in 1990 you set the key and forget it ( stock function). if I have it is Full power it is always there.
in 91- later, in stock form, every time you start the car you need to turn the key (spring loaded) to engage full power mode.
So in Riviera's car, the chip defaults the car to full power mode at start (stock defaulted to valet) it does not 'open' the secondaries at start , but rather allows for full function of them without having to turn the power key at every start up
