View Full Version : Who can read my unknown chip?

Hi,

I've posted it a few times here but I think it's worth its own thread now.

I bought my '91 ZR-1 last fall and I discovered it has a performance chip. However, I don't know what's in the chip so I feel it is pretty useless.

Anybody know where it's from? Or who can read it?

Thanks!

Looks like Ron Zimmer's writing to me so I'd guess Z industries chip.

MuRCieLaGo, do you have access to a chassis dyno?

If yes, you should go, do a run and have them log air fuel/ratio before sending your chip off. That way, the reader/tuner can also make changes if needed.

Or, you may see that your AFR is pretty good and your chip is fine as is.

Thanks a lot, I just sent an email to Z-Industries. However, it seems they are in California, and the car spent its life in Ohio...

Hum, serious?

I hope the email they provide on the website is good...

I've got access to a local dyno. I'll probably end up buying a chip from Marc Haibeck because I'm installing headers at the moment. Does he really want to know my AFR?

Z-Industries answered my email and they are convinced they never touched this chip.

<snip> Does he really want to know my AFR?Nah. That was if you were using your current chip as a starting point. If you're getting a new chip from Marc (a great idea), he'll probably suggest a good starting point based on what you tell him about your car. There's a good chance he'll get it pretty close.

I just sent him the chip this morning, he told me he was going to read it. So from now on my ZR-1 is officially out of service (and I don't like it).

Yeah, unfortunately that's one of the disadvantages of tuning via postal mail. That's why I suggested going to the dyno as a first step to see how close your chip was to ideal AFR. You might have found out it was fine, or at least would have learned which direction you needed to go, and at what RPMs.

But, having said that, there's probably no one better than Marc to get it right.

There's quite a bit more involved to getting the optimum tune and many gallons of fuel, and miles of data logging. When u get it right, you understand that "good enough" isn't good enough.

I agree, if there is a stopwatch involved in measuring your performance.

For many of us, assuming our driving is 99+% on public roads, a few more or less HP wont make a big difference in how much we enjoy our cars.

It has nothing to do w a stopwatch. I'm talking about driveability, mpg, emissions, startup, acceleration. The areas of the tune that control 99.9% of the time we drive our cars.
