All of us have some BHAG(Big Hair *** Goal). Mine has always been a dream of touring Europe in my Corvette culminating in a stop in Southern Italy (Puglia) where my parents came from after WWII. We have a number of registry members and ZR-1 afficianados in Europe and they have been good enough t visit us here in the States, I've dreamt of returning that favor by visiting them.
But with a difference. I think they would be excited to have some of us visit them w the ZRs they have heard and read about. Some ZRs from the States.
A European tour visiting our brethren in England, France, Germany, and Italy would be the ultimate trip. Would love to have Jim Voter along to do one of his great chronicles.
Sam,
Whaddya think about that?

Wow ByeBye, that is really tempting. I know you can get to Greece by ferry near my ancestral town of Bari. Not sure I have enough to time to plan it this year. And I have a new job that started less than a year ago. However, I posted this to see if we could arrange things perhaps for 2017. I'm thinking September would be a better time of year when the rest of the tourists have left, but the weather is still great.
Another thought I had was to go to Europe right about the time of the
24Heures du LeMan. Wow that would be awesome. Visit Normandy also.
Have you shipped vehicles w anyone? Obviously we need an outfit truly reliable and on-time, not to mention trustworthy.

I have used Wallenius Lines in the past...out of Port Newark NJ in the past
They are the people that import Volvos,Jaguars, Saabs etc from N. Europe into N.America
Very professional n reliable outfit: usually around 3 weeks to N. European ports
You should see all the American Iron that goes overseas:from Hummers to Fin Caddies etc
Getting insurance on the other side will be a bigger issue for only 1-2 months
....n get ready to D R I V E !!...they don't play around in the Autobahn !

I was going to ship a Corvette to Germany in April but was unable to get insurance for more than 30 days once it arrived there without paying 19 % VAT and than has to get it inspected. Emmisions are very strict there, not aure it would pass.
So instead of shipping my car there I just purchased an Audi and it will be delivered to me in Germany.

You might want to check a non exclusive ZR-1 Corvette Club that might participate with your European trip efforts. Here's a web site you may want to look at and investigate if you wish to include others in your plans. www.belgiancorvetteclub.be

Don,
I just got a call yesterday from Audi with a tentative date of June 1 to picked up in Nectarsuhm, about 35 minutes from wher I live. I thought I was to pick it from Ingelstadt. They told me that all RS 7,with the racing package are hand build cars and built at Nectarsuhm. Take's about 4 months from start to finnish . They are going to do the euro tune to about 707 hp, if i picked it up here in the states it wioukd only 606 hp.i bought the extra insurce package that cover 2 additions months liability insurance, and drive using a German tag.

My client search a stock ZR-1 in the colours red/black or torch-red/torch-red, turquoise, charcoal, bright aqua, admiral blue. A yellow 1990 would be fantastic. Max mileage about 70'000. Model Year doesn't matter. Price max. 25'000 Euros. The car has to be brought to Germany. Cash payer.

Here is some info my friend gave me. He is the VP of the Bayern Corvette Club.
My biggest problem was trying to get an insurance provider in Germany without haveing the car inspected. I could not take a chance to get there and have some problem where it would sit for a few months.
i was in the market anyway for a new car, so I order an Audi. they provide me a German tag and 89 days of insurance and is good all over Europe and down to Greece.
German requirements
You have to pay a so-called customs security guarantee. That is in case you sell the car in Germany or stay longer then six months. The guarantee sum is normally 10% of the car value. Summarized: you can go with your license plate, you have to procure liability insurance, you have to pass customs and maybe pay a security guarantee and you must leave Germany within six months. The guy of ADAC also told me to ask for regulations six weeks prior to the import again because regulations may change during a year.
He also said that after 30 days you would have to have your car inspected and than past the emission test. You also have to pay 19% VAT. This would be returned to me after the car was shipped. They would not give me a time on how long it would take to receive the VAT back.
A neighbor who has a 73 Corvette told me this.
It is not required to change tail lights in Germany. I changed the one you saw in the video to the Original ones. The only thing to do is to adjust additional cat's eyes. - You can go with a German license plate to any other country. The only thing I need as a "green card" which is an additional insurance paper which shows the agreement of my insurance company to travel abroad. - Corvettes have to pass inspections every other year after their first inspection in Germany. They also need to pass a emission inspection which is really hard to get. Every time we do it we have to turn down the the revolution speed to a minimum which makes the engine wiggling and wobbling and shaking the car like a wild horse in a rodeo. First thing after being back from the inspection is turning up the revs to a normal status which is about 800 revs per minute.
I took the 73 to South Tyrol in the Alps and did not change anything. But the petrol consumption went up to about 7 gallons for about 60 miles. Normal consumption is about 4 gallons. - Of course Germans like old and new Corvettes. I recognized envy especially in big towns like Munich but as soon as you are outside Munich people love to see and hear Corvettes. And Germans love to touch cars. When you have polished the car and go for a show you will have fingerprints all over the car after only an hour. - There are 4 C4's ZR1s in Germany, that I know of one also in our club, the Corvette Club Bayern. - I think the vettes Germans like most are C1 to C3. - There are quite a lot Corvette clubs in Europe, the Corvette Club Bayern is the oldest one. - You can find high octane petrol in Germany up to 100 octane. - It is not so easy to rent a suitable garage in and around Munich. But I promise if you need to store your Corvette somewhere for a longer time and not on your farm we definitely will find a place. It's just asking the guys in our club.

Dom,
I will be leaving Monday for a couple of months in Europe. I wish I would be driving one of my corvettes, but this year I will be driving an Audi RS 7.
I am going to go to the German consulate in Berlin and also customs in Bremerhaven to find out about the insurance requirements and the VAT tax. I was able to get the insurance on the Audi for 3 months for about $700, but will have to pay additional fee when I take the car to the Nurburgring.

Sam,
That's what I was thinking. Perhaps some of us can come over and be joined by some of our European brethren. We would make stops in places where our
European ZR-1 friends are and spend a few days at each.
My thoughts were to land car at Southhampton, perhaps meet up w some colleges in Britain, then Chunnel to France. Would love to visit Normandy and Paris. Then possibly Spain, onto Switzerland, Germany, then down to Italy(Milan, Como), gotta stop by Maranello, Puglia in the South where I have friends and family.
Any thoughts on that?

So Sam, what would be a good time of year to come to Europe for those gatherings?
I will have an EU passport by this year as I get dual citizenship as an Italian citizen.
Nelson,
Do you know if t is possible to pick up your car at one port and drop it off at another, so as to avoid doubling back on your trip?
