Hi,

I like to browse Dynomite's threads and the transmission oil that you guys recommend is BMW's Castrol Edge 10W-60 but the product is discontinued. In 2016, which oil should I use instead?

You can get all the BMW's Castrol Edge 10W-60 you want on Ebay :p

Castrol 10w-60 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=castrol+10w60+motorsport&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xcastrol+1 0w60+.TRS0&_nkw=castrol+10w60+&_sacat=0)

Both Castrol Edge and Castrol Motorsport say BMW and Both are 10W-60 Difference between Castrol Edge and Castrol Motorsport (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=926080)

zfdoc says BMW 10w-60 for the ZF S6-40 Transmission (http://www.zfdoc.com/techinfo.htm)

Thanks Dynomite! So they still recommend Castrol Edge over Amsoil Synchromesh...

I just switched over from the BMW Castrol to Amsoil Synchromesh. Have not found any issues with it. Shifting is same effort, and my perception is that the trans is a bit quieter after the oil has heated up, i.e. After a hot long run.
It's also a bit less expensive.

I am using Lucas synthetic stabilizer with a touch of non synthetic Lucas oil stabilizer. Seems to be working just fine. Cost is about the same as Castrol oil.

What is BMW using for motor oil now?

I linked over to that Castrol oil comparison thread. It's a bit confusing. Here is what I concluded (and please feel free to comment if you don't agree - I'm just trying to provide clarity, and hoping I interpreted it correctly).

The newest/best/cheapest is Edge Professional TWS.

You don't need/want the "Sport" or "Motorsports" versions.

You don't need to pay for the extra "Genuine BMW" version.

Note: That thread started in late 2013. I'm not sure if it is still current.

Our cars need 2.2 qts.

It's a bit different in Canada. It's pretty hard to get Edge Professional TWS, and shipping from eBay is expensive. But I'll do it if it's a must...

However, my local NAPA store suggest me to put Pennzoil Synchromesh or Liqui Moly 10w60.

What do you guys think?

On Marc Haibeck's suggestion, I switched to Red Line Heavy Shockproof (synthetic) Gear Oil.

And, I also replaced the differential with Red Line (and added a 2oz bottle of GM's friction modifier for limited slip differentials.

It always shifted nice, except for the syncro in 5th gear is on its way out: crunches when the oil is cold and I shift into 5th aggressively. With the Red Line the 5th gear crunching seems to have quieted down some, compared to the TWS.

No complaints. And, I can get it at almost any automotive supply store.

Oh! Not related specifically, but I drilled and tapped the differential to accept a small drain plug. It really simplifies changing the differential oil!

2. Differential case drain installation
Installed an aftermarket Differential Case Drain Plug for easy fluid change.
The kit is available from Corvette Central (http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000050f~Z5Z5Z511097~ P66.95~~~~S3KN0L4RZ016625032824n~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000 050F)
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/dynomite007/ZR1%20Modified/DiffCaseDrain3.jpg
The kit provides a template that puts the hole just left of the center bolt in the valley of the differential.

The tap size is 1/8-27 pipe and it installs easily with drill (11/32) and tap supplied in the kit.
I drilled the bottom flange just under the ring gear and let the old fluid drain (which drained in about 10 minutes). I then tapped the drilled hole for the 1/8 inch allen pipe plug. When you tap the hole, try the pipe plug several times as you tap so you end up with the pipe plug out maybe 1/16 inch when tight .
I pumped in a pint of Mobile 1 75W-90 and let that drain cleaning out a lot of old oil and any tap debris. 1/8 inch Aluminum Allen Head NPT pipe plugs (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1485r)
I inserted the 1/8 inch allen pipe plug and pumped in a bit over 3 pints of Mobile 1 75W-90 into the fill port on the North side of the differential (Z facing West)
The Differential case can be COMPLETELY drained and flushed with new oil using this method as compared to trying to suck out the old oil.
