...in a nose down situation. Pulled out of garage and parked on the driveway for several hours. When I fired it back up it smoked quite a bit. I thought I remember reading somewhere that parked at a decline sometimes they will smoke??

What does it smell like?

Did it eventually clean-up or is the smoking constant? If it cleaned up maybe a valve guide seal or towards the front of the engine is worn, just a guess.

Dave, if yours is a '90, unless you've installed them later, there are no seals on the exhaust valves. A puff of blue is common for 90s on startup. But, there is webbing (cam bearings, etc) surrounding the valves of each cylinder. so I doubt that nose down...even waaay down...is the cause of it.
Just guessing, butI wonder if it was nose-down to the point of oil swamping the crank at the #1, 2 cylinders. Cranking it then might slosh a unusually large amount of oil up onto the cylinder walls...??? :dontknow: Has it done it since (i.e., more than normal) when sitting more or less level??

Also if you are parked nose down on an incline, any condensation in the exhaust system will pool towards the front where it gets hot quicker and produces steam. If the car sits for a while it can build up a surprising amount of condensation. But if that is it, it will evaporate with a little bit of driving to thoroughly heat up the exhaust system. And as Paul noted if your car is a 90 without valve stem seals it might also have a bit of oil in the cylinders at start up.--Bob

It's a '94 and it's never done it before. I backed it back into the garage and shut it off but it seemed to be dissipating as I backed it in. I'm going to see if I can duplicate the issue tomorrow. I'll report back with more detail.
edit - One footnote...It did NOT do it when I started it up to pull it outside. Only once it sat outside all day in a nose down attitude. It's got to be something that has to do with that or it would've done it when I started it to pull it outside.

Not a fluke. It did it again today. Could it be fuel? It has a really rich smell. O2 sensor calling for more fuel for some reason?

Took it out today and it's running really, really well with no smoke. No smoke on start up in the garage or at the diner after breakfast. Corey seems to think it's just oil in the plenum getting into the combustion cycle when parked nose down. At this point I have to accept that as a reasonable assumption. It's just weird that it's never done it before.
