View Full Version : What are the widest tires street legal that can fit a ZR-1 (with aftermarket wheels)?

Can't find the information anywhere. I'm not really interested in buying new rims, but I'm curious to know what are the widest tires you've seen on a ZR-1. *Without fender flares*.

By street legal I mean legal tires AND the wheels can't get passed the fenders.

This garbage would be illegal for example, because the wheels are passed the fenders:

Several on this forum have 345s. I'm getting ready to do the same using Z06 wheels. That's a 13.2" tire.

I have Michelin 335x30 18s on 12" wide Shelby Series 1 Wheels. They are perfect. I guess some 345's may fit, but I think they would be too much.

Would like to replace my Michelins on my stock '90. Fronts are available from Michelin ( 275/40/17) but rear ( 315/35/17) are not . Michelin can supply rear 335/35/17.
Anyone had experience going from 315 to 335 ??
thanks:

A lot of guys here including myself have run 335/35/17 Michelin Pilots with no issues except for a little more traction.

I put the Michelins on the stock 17" rims and they are great tires, albeit not inexpensive. Got mine at Costco with their great service and warranty it was the best local purchase + install deal. Much more traction and, as new tires, a more comfortable ride. Stock size up front and 335s in back. More traction for sure over the (replaced) Sumis that came on the car when purchased.-Bob

Its a 12" wide wheel, so the tire is at least that, probably closer to 13" wide. I think the 345's are on 19" wheels. My brother had them on his 06 Z06. The 345's end up with a bit larger diameter that threw off his traction control system and ABS. The same thing could happen with our cars?

335 Michelins on my 1990 and I drove them from from WA state to bowling green, ( the May gathering) heibeck's shop and back to WA. 4700 miles. They ride and handle great.

Ps. Cruise set at 103 mph on the trip for a short distant and wife never woke up. Smooth tires.

I am running with that exact configuration, Pilot Sport PS2's. I checked with Michelin tech and they said that they would be fine on my stock '93 wheels. The fit well, no sidewall bulge, they perform perfectly. I used to use Goodyear GS-D3's but they were unavailable at the time. Comparing the two, I'll stick with these. I must admit that the Goodyear's are better in wet conditions, but the rubber got hard pretty quickly. There is a two mile an hour difference in speedometer reading.

Curious about any issues w ABS. I went from 275s up front to 285s due to the

I've run a variety of sizes and degrees of stagger on 2 different C4s and have found the ABS to be very accommodating.

Actually, I thought I was just never triggering it.

Then one day I had a bad hub the day before an event. Only 1 good spare and it was from the other car, bolts up fine but no ABS. I figured that'd be OK since I "never" feel the ABS kick in.

Sure enough I had lockup at every hard brake & turn. Seems I use the hell out of the ABS but never knew it.

PS I've been running 315/335 17's for a long time, and pretty much cantilevered at that - just lacking tread ;). Just a couple small rubs - nothing damaging.

HTH,
- Jeff

335/30/ZR18 Toyo R888 Proxes just barely fit between the lift plates.
:p
If I have it centered perfectly, the tires fit exactly at the same width as my lift plates.

Dom,
If you need them I can turn you out a set of custom count reluctor wheels. Needed them for mine when I went staggered 285/35R18s and 345/30R19s so the ABS and ASR sytem alarm light would stop freaking out after a few miles. I know a few guys who have gone with this tire size combo and did'nt have an issue but I wasn't so lucky. At least I know my ABS and ASR systems are fully functional.

Thanks Phil. Hoping to get rear tires mounted and balanced Saturday. Probably won't know about ASR freak out until a bit later depending on weather. Installed the DRM brackets last week and by next week I hope to have the tie rod end brackets on. Then she'll be ready for an alignment.

Update on the tires. Drove from Chicago to Detroit today w no issues. Had the car aligned last weekend and it appears that w the alignment, it eliminated the rubbing of the inner wheel well on bumps. This is after the installation of the
DRM trailing arm and lower control arm brackets. The rear feels better planted
and any dips are well controlled. I can ride around w TOUR for the ride control setting and still not have interference on rear inner wheel well.
Also, I get no Service light for ABS.
