So the story on this car is that it has been around the site before. It had 3 owners, sat for 5 years with an older gentlemen, was driven up to November 2015, it was a Texas car. 60K on the odometer.

Burn seems to have started in the transmission area JUST LIKE this one>
http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12444
(Hmmm,..a 92' burn problem??)
damage is almost identical to the damage in thread above, with only difference being LESS damage to the wiring bundle and the engine rear.
Plan?
1.Gloss up the black exterior
2. Change Black to RED interior(Blk interior is in great condition aside from one of the door panels, seats are awesome, with tiny blemishes)
3. Pulling the engine and doing a soft rebuild(UDATED!...368-415 build)
4. Powdercoat of top end with blade silver.
5. secondaries DELETE!!
6. wire bundle may need to be replaced(UPDATED!..minor 8 wire transplant)
7. Transmission will have a short shifter installed
8. Exhaust is completely stock...hmmmm
9. memcal burn with mods in mind.
10. Dyno run
ALL subject to change....

OK...so the burn wasn't sooo small....:censored:
entire area you see is brittle to paper-strong...
I am going to SMC the entire side and sand/paint to perfection...OR cut the whole thing and replace it with a donor piece,
melted **** everywhere, water in the floorboards, ect. standard F%ked up car..
I am dyna-matting the whole interior(Like the white car)
This car WILL dominate!!!...just going to take a few months..and about 200 hrs of work..

The speedo-gear was melted and leaking..this MAY have led to the burn, due to the destruction(most of it anyway) was right next to and above.

After the tranny, came the engine removal...so far a decent amount of fiberglass damage, burned wires, a **** ton of halon fire retardant and a cracked cam cover. NOT TOO BAD :dancing

Wow that looks like a heck of a project! Cleaning all that mess alone is gonna take some hours. Is the trans good still or did the fire kill it? And I would think that cam cover could be TIG welded, and since you were going to refinish anyway it should look like it never even happened..

So......I am not sure what to make of the cam cover.....

****Also....the Broken cam cover was NOT the original....the PO installed the cam cover and along with the crack/hack job on the cam cover, the rear-outboard cam journal was galled and damaged from the pressure applied from using the WRONG cam cover.!
Due to this I will NOT be using these heads on this engine during the big-cube "Dragon Heart" build
oricale
02-05-2016, 11:44 PM
Update: Once I got the engine out, I was faced with the standard "frosting" of oil and grime. Note: seems like the oil was from the corner of the passenger cam cover that the PO had mistakenly got electric tape in between the cover and the head...

After a bit...(ok alot of thought...I have decided with the much needed help of Phil and Pete to build the 92' into the big cube engine. We will be using the 4" components from phil and after a bit of discussion we will either build the 368 or a bigger displacement.

Sooo... In place of the big cube engine for now(depending on crank time on anything bigger than a 368) after we finish the interior and wiring, I will go ahead and drop in the Chrome 91' engine I built in 14':
*Ported plenum and IH's
*plenum coolant mod
*52K on the block/internals

When it comes to the rebuild of these cars I will be posting under the website

Finished up the Rubber and Dyna-matting!..
So for the interior and underside, after the repair to the fiberglass, we:
*sanded and rubberized the underside and Dyna-matted floor joint.
*Removed the compromised joint glue, and re-glued with a black silicone bonding agent(that goop on the right floorboard is OEM...not me)
*Topside was sanded, rubberized the entire floorboard and trans tunnel
*Re-sealed the manual boot ring with the black silicone
*Dyna-matted the floor boards

SO after much interest, The cause of the fire seem to be the VSS, which ether shorted and caught fire or leaked and caught fire. (The 92' that had the same issue had the same type of VSS and was burned in the Exact same area), then once it caught fire it melted/burned the rubber boot around the lower shifter causing the fiberglass damage, as well as traveled up the harness to burn the fwd areas just under the front of the tunnel, until the fire was put out with must have been the entire amount of halon powder allowed in texas:mad:.
SOO..I realize it may be a very small portion of vehicles to have this issue ,..however to alleviate any issue that may arise,
To those who still have stock manifolds,..I would recommend:
*Checking the wires(VSS,Reverse lockout ect) to make sure they are not fraying, touching the exhaust, melted ect.
*Put a simple fire barrier in the trans tunnel(dyna-mat, fyre barrier ect)

Actually, if I remember correctly, Evan had said the original owner of the '92 you are referring to that I worked on, put the fire out with one of those giant big gulp type sodas that he happened to have on him. Lol! :-D

Epilogue:
I honestly REALLY didn't think I could get the engine in the car with what seemed like 3 foot long manifolds on, let alone without damaging SOMETHING in the process....
The only provisions I made was disconnecting the hood to get another 2" of space, then covering everything with towels and cardboard.
One of most difficult things was to get the motor mounts lined up with the frame mounts...Especially with the stock manifolds!AFTER an hour of "motivating" the engine....(THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ERROR)
..other than a mark on the AC canister.....success...

When I put the LT5 back in the '90 Z I used to own, I tried it with the injector housings on, but it wouldn't clear the crossbar in the front. I didn't have the exhaust manifolds on either. I had to not only remove the IH's, but also the wiper motor from the firewall to get the necessary clearance.
That was with the harmonic balancer on too. If that was off, would have more clearance, but putting the HB on with the engine installed looks like a giant pain in the a$$.
EDIT: I see you got it in, wow, I'm surprised. I wonder why I had so much trouble with mine?

Finesse my man,...finesse....:-D
I actually had to work it inch by inch and remove the driver side IH(to not damage the wiper-motor plastic...although the stock manifolds with their GIGANTIC CC's were touching EVERYTHING!
I think if I had another pair of hands, it may have been a bit quicker.;)

If I ever get around to it, I have new red carpet & red interior pieces that will be installed but I am going to keep my black seats. I think it will look fine with black seats.

So The engine is sorted and running pretty good!, brakes have new pads, re-did all the vacuum lines. Classic B&M Ripper is installed and shifting good. The full RED interior came in and will be putting that in pretty quick.
Now, in preparation for future race-prep with this car we eliminated the spare tire and are running the straight-piped exhaust through the rear panels(modded with aluminum and riveting)(like a beast!)
After a hopefully successful run at the "Tail" we will be stepping this car from NA-to-NOS-to-TT.
So with ANY luck we'll have this car at the TOD.

Hello all,!
Last time I left this thread, I was taking the car to the tail of the dragon!...
The tail was awesome!...ran it really well, all had a great time!.
http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad18/oricale/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-05/20160512_112650_zpsskqsh9gq.jpg (http://s917.photobucket.com/user/oricale/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-05/20160512_112650_zpsskqsh9gq.jpg.html)
However in NC I pulled into a gas station and got gas, upon finishing my fill up we tried to start the car, car started up Perfect!...except for NO oil pressure to the tensioners. Upon troubleshooting we eliminated many of the common issues that would cause this. Meanwhile in the hotel room I went ahead and studied the FSM and found the likely culprit.
Within the oil pressure system, there is an oil pressure regulation valve,..unfortunately to get it out of the of the engine and inspected, the engine MUST come out.

As you can see, the regulator on the left is the failed one and a smooth bored NOS is on the right.
Diagnosis!: When I built the engine I had the top end powder coated chrome. Upon media blasting of the parts, the company failed to remove all of the silica from the top end, when installed, Upon tear down I found approx 1 OZ of silica in the filter and oil pan. The damage to the regulator valve kept the plunger from collapsing. (The regulator spring as well as the friction caused by the many grooves on the bore)The initial oil pressure from the pump could not overcome the friction and bypassed directly back into the pan.
During this initial failure I ran the car approx 12 seconds over about 5 starts.
Upon removal and rebuild of the engine we found NO other issues affecting the engine and it sub-parts. However we decided to replace ALL bearings, seals and gaskets.

Dempster, nice work brother. Make sure you put a little mat on the back side so the harmonics don't make vibration noises.

what up!...yeah roger that, actually on the 3 of these that I have done, two of the cars were Dynamated on the inside and then I also utilize a DEI mat in the ring where the muffler meets the fender. this DEI has a heat shielding of over 900+degrees!.
