Preparations are underway for Mountain Run 4. If you've already been on one of the previous mountain runs, then you know what it's all about. If you haven't then you really need to consider MR4.

MR4 will begin on Sunday evening, May 8 and end on Wed, May 11 in BG, just in time for pizza at the U-Plaza.

We will be staying at the Park Vista in Gatlinburg for the entire MR4 (scroll down for hotel info). There will be a variety of road trips available each day with something that should be perfect for each & every participant.

For a better idea of what MR4 will be like, click HERE (http://zrwon.com/cruise/index.html) and open the MR1, MR2, and MR3 albums as well as the Tail of the Dragon albums.

Please reply to this post if:

you're definitely going

Going to talk to George in the next couple of days. I like what we did last year Fontana for the first two nights and Alcoa for the third night. I am hearing that most participants would like to stay at Fontana resort all three days.

All at one works 4 me too. But, whatever you two decide is good. Let us know what we can do to help!

I have a slight preference for all days at Fontana, but that's a selfish request from me because we don't plan to go all the way to BG this year. So, like Paul, we'll be fine (and will have fun) with whatever plan you decide. Thanks for organizing this.

For Steve, Doug, Robert, Paul, Russ + others,

I've worked out several tentative routes (I've driven virtually all of the roads in the region but not necessarily on the exact routes that I'm looking at for MR4. I plan to have a variety of routes to pick from including some with the most seat time and some with plenty of "sight-seeing & local stops" ... i.e. something for everyone.

All the routes I've worked on presume Fontana as home base. It is definitely possible to depart Fontana on Wed AM, run the Dragon south to north, and make it to BG by early afternoon. It's also possible to add the Devil's Triangle or other scenic routes and still make BG in time for pizza. Looks like a win-win as far as I'm concerned.

Robert, we need to go ahead and block rooms starting Sunday (Mother's Day) and checking out on Wed AM. FWIW, many participants from last year indicated they really liked the idea of staying at Fontana and since it's very centrally located to all the "good" roads, it seems like the logical thing to do. Depending on how many participants we have we can either opt for a buffet dinner on Tue nite (similar to last year) or do something different. Lots of options.

I would say to subscribe to this thread but I think notifications are not working at the moment, so please check this thread frequently for updates and definitely let us know of your interest, especially if you are definitely planning on attending MR4.

sounds good ... definitely want Hutch in the loop & I'm sure he will be OK with the plan. Past 3 weeks have been rough on the calendar ... hope to get back on track after tomorrow. Planning on going up to the mountains in a couple of weeks. Was going next week but snow is expected, just enough to make the curvy roads more challenging than I wish. Will keep you posted.

MR4 UPDATE - Please Read !!!
Tentative Itinerary
Sun May 8 - 8:00 pm Driver's Meeting in Gatlinburg
Mon May 9 - Day 1 run (choose a route)
Tue May 10 - Day 2 run (choose a route)
Wed May 11 - Day 3 (caravan to BG for pizza)

Driver's Meeting
We will go over final details, answer questions, suggest routes for you to choose, etc. etc. Most (probably all) of the MR4 info will be emailed to each participant at least a week prior to the Driver's Meeting

Tentative Routes
MR4 participants will have a greater choice of routes this year including Wayah Rd that is "new" to the MR routes. Route choices range from 137 miles (3:29 driving time) to 288 miles (7:12). The shorter routes have more scenic stops, plenty of time for lunch, and will be fairly relaxed in nature. A couple of longer routes are available especially for the "iron butts" ... no more complaining about not having enough seat time. Look at all the routes HERE (http://zrwon.com/cruise/mtn16). Contact me with suggestions or additional requests.

Accommodations
The MR4 hotel is the Park Vista in Gatlinburg

Participants
Now's the time to sign up. Let us know you're going.

Contact Info
If you participated in a previous Mountain Run and your email, cell ph#, car info, etc. are unchanged, we should have your contact info on file. If not, please PM or email me the following:
Name
Driving Solo or w/Navigator
Forum Name
Address
City State Zip
Cell Ph
Email Address
Car Info (year/color)

Questions
Post any questions you might have in this thread ... or send me a PM ... or email me by clicking HERE (http://www.zrwon.com/infopage.html) and then clicking the Email box. Remember that you can check out photos & more from previous Mountain Runs by visiting my website (link in my signature below).

MR1 had the original Magnificent 7 ZR-1's; MR2 had 15 cars; MR3 had 36 cars; here's hoping we have a big turnout for MR4. If you've never made the Mountain Run, now's your chance ... it will be an experience you will never forget and most likely you'll want to repeat.

Wanted to give everyone a heads up, Fontana resort is booked solid for our event. I am trying to find accommodations to support 60 rooms.
I started posting the Venue on the Simple Corvette, C4 modified, LT4-LT5 owners, C4 Corvette, ZR-1 Net Registry and Specialty C4 groups in Facebook. With the traction I am receiving, I do not believe 60 rooms is going to be enough.
When George and I started this event three years ago, We started with the Magnificent 7. Our goal was to get 100 Corvettes to participate. I did not expect it to come to fruition so soon.

Fontana is totally booked (except for 4-5 rooms) by the MiniCoopers, who changed weeks from last year. We may be faster but those spunky little Coopers are quicker, at least when it comes to booking the rooms we thought we had. Ah well, 20-20 hindsight. And we only found this out in the last 12-18 hours ... so all the work Robert was doing on the rooms is basically a start over, but no worries there, he's a magician & a genius when it comes to finding accommodations.

And the maps that I've been working on for "more than a couple of hours" are out the window (maybe use them next year) so I'm working on alternate scenarios that will work with our new "headquarters". I was a bit disappointed when I learned what happened but dug back into my map software and believe that we're going to have a terrific mountain run. The wife always tells me to make lemonade when you're thrown a couple of lemons and my cup already "runneth" over.

So, no worries ... MR4 will be great ... and if you see any Coopers on the road ... well, I'm sure you'll think of something

Stay tuned (i.e. check this thread often). We're working hard on a quick solution and will post the outcome here ASAP.

Robert and I and company discussed holing up at London KY Saturday night. Then on Sunday, caravan to Gatlinburg (?) (exact destination TBA). However, the Wazoo group might prefer grouping somewhere else (along I-81?) Saturday night. Then, maybe those of us coming from the west could meet up w/ y'all and caravan to (Gatlinburg?).

Thoughts?

UPDATE !!!

MR4 hotel accommodations will be in Gatlinburg. Robert is completing the details and will be posting that info ASAP so that everyone can go ahead and make reservations, etc.

I will update the route maps in about a week (leaving for the mountains and won't have decent internet access). However, most of the routes from Gatlinburg will be very similar to the routes already proposed - just a different starting/ending place. Included will be the Dragon, Foothills Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, Smoky Mountain Loop, the best parts of Moonshiner 28, Highlands, waterfalls, scenic overlooks PLUS a couple of new roads that I will be looking at later this week.

It's gonna be GREAT ... if you've been on any of the previous mountain runs, you will drive some of your favorite roads PLUS have the opportunity to try out some new roads. And staying in Gatlinburg will be especially nice with an abundance of good restaurants, shops, and spectacular views.

Gunny
02-23-2016, 12:42 AM
Did a "quick & dirty" update of the proposed routes ... I posted some basic routes that we will be driving. More to come after I've checked out some new roads (as well as some of the old ones) later this week. Leaving for the mountains in about 6 hours ... may have to dodge a little snow & ice, but otherwise it should be good weather.

We will have a driver's meeting on Sunday evening no earlier than 8 PM, possibly a little later so that everyone will have time to arrive, check in, and eat dinner.

The road tours each day will begin at the hotel (or other staging area in Gatlinburg) and will return to the hotel each day except Wed, when we caravan to BG for pizza and

I've updated the route maps on my website. Click HERE (http://www.zrwon.com/cruise/mtn16/index.html) to see the routes for MR4. As with the previous runs, flexibility is the key to everyone having lots of fun, so if we need to adjust any of the runs we will do so. However, I think everyone will find it difficult to choose which route to take each day since all of them will be very good for scenery, roads, and more. At least one of the routes includes the Smoky Mtn Loop, Foothills Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, and the Dragon (twice, back-to-back) ... I'm unofficially calling this one the "Iron Butt Run" ... you younger guys can battle over who will lead this one. Last year, about a month before MR3, I started at 6 AM from my mountain home in the middle of the mountains and ran two complete day runs in one long day. It was beyond fun but I gotta admit that this ole body doesn't bounce back quite so quickly the day after driving 12 hours of mountain roads.

I'm driving back up later this week to work on the house but may have time to check out some more roads, restaurants, etc. Hopefully I won't be dodging snow/ice on the roads this trip ... two weeks ago I was really glad I wasn't in the Z because the roads were a tad slippery in several places.

Reminder: bookmark this thread and check back frequently for updates.

CARAVANS TO MR4

It's not too soon to start planning regional caravans to Gatlinburg. Your MR4 experience will be even better if you can caravan in groups from your region.

From the west - take I-40 east, then take exit 407 south to Gatlinburg.
From the north - take I-75 south to Knoxville, east on I-40 to exit 407.
From the northeast/east - take I-81 south to I-40, then west on I-40 to exit 407.
From the east/southeast - go north to I-40, then west on I-40 to exit 407.
From the south - go north to I-40, then continue to exit 407 ... OR, better still, go to Atlanta, take I-85 north to I-985 that becomes US-23/US-441. Stay on 441 through Cherokee NC, the Smoky Mtn. Park, and finally Gatlinburg. The hotel is a few blocks east of 441 right after you enter Gatlinburg ... can't miss it ... large hotel on the side of the mountain overlooking the city. Anyone driving up 23/441 contact me since that's the route I'll be taking.

I suggest using this thread for the initial organization of caravans ... if it gets too crowded/confusing then we might want to start a separate thread for each of the caravans.

Congrats on the display opportunity. Will you make Mon & Tue runs and then depart Wed morning for BG? I really hope you will be able to make the Tue run as we will be on some roads you haven't seen plus we will have several terrific photo ops ... plus I hope you can be there for Tue night dinner.

The shortest/quickest route from the Park Vista to the UPlaza is 245 miles / 4:21 driving time according to google maps plus you gain an hour with the time change. It's mostly interstate and/or 4-lane so I think it can be easily be done in less than 4 hrs w/1 fuel stop ... i.e. leave Park Vista at 9AM and ETA UPlaza at 12 noon. Very doable.

What route are you taking? coming up 441 through Clayton? If so, maybe we can caravan from Dillard to Gatlinburg.Haven't thought about it yet. We'll touch base when it gets closer.

Checked google maps ... two basic routes from Kennesaw to Park Vista Hotel
I-75 to Knoxville, east on I-40, south to Gatlinburg - 232 miles/3:45
US-76/US-74 to Blue Ridge, Murphy, Cherokee then north on 441 to Gatlinburg - 189 miles/3:58

The route I-85/I-985 to US-23/441 to Clayton, Franklin, Cherokee makes some sense from mid-Atlanta but is less direct than the 2 routes above. I can rendezvous at Cherokee unless you decide on a route that goes through either Clayton or Franklin. If it works, great ... if not, I'll see you at the hotel.

George, I am good with meeting you in Clayton or Dillard. Might even go 575 North East on 130 North on 85 do top half of six gaps down through Cleveland up to Helen east to Clayton than North with you. What time do you want to depart out of Clayton?

Robert,

We plan to attend Sun AM services at the Sky Valley Chapel ... I need to find out what time the services are over but I'm guessing before noon, so we should be able to meet you in Dillard at the Chevron around 12 noon.

If you want a good route to 6 Gaps with a couple of legs of 6 Gaps I have a suggestion for you to consider. Try this LINK (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Kennesaw,+GA/Dahlonega,+GA/Dillard,+GA/@34.4948238,-84.2806573,10z/data=!4m30!4m29!1m10!1m1!1s0x88f53fe559b6b0a1:0x9b ab3fc183165892!2m2!1d-84.6154897!2d34.0234337!3m4!1m2!1d-84.4209081!2d34.4081153!3s0x885f87c13bf5161f:0x363 5adba569646ca!1m10!1m1!1s0x885f663a6c225031:0x4107 f4a9601eba83!2m2!1d-83.9843953!2d34.5261465!3m4!1m2!1d-83.8954591!2d34.7955348!3s0x885f3e78cab2fc31:0x187 7105e5456a20!1m5!1m1!1s0x8858d9a3c7f5217d:0x92f432 3e5801296c!2m2!1d-83.3871006!2d34.9700911!3e0). Looks like its 144 miles / 3:16 time. Then from Dillard to Gatlinburg is 82 miles / 1:55 staying on the 4 lane (K will be driving her SUV and I doubt she will want to do any of NC-28 north of Franklin. If this route (or similar) looks OK to you we could do lunch in either Franklin or Cherokee or even a late lunch in Gatlinburg. FWIW, this route takes you by the Atlanta Motorsports Park (http://atlantamotorsportspark.com) as well as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame (http://georgiaracinghof.com) in Dawsonville. Decent roads/scenery, a bit out of your way, but worth it IMO. I haven't driven at the Motorsports Park but Russ goes there on a regular basis ... perhaps he will chime in.

The most direct mountain route from Kennesaw to Gatlinburg is HERE (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Kennesaw,+GA/The+Park+Vista+-+a+DoubleTree+by+Hilton+Hotel+-+Gatlinburg,+Cherokee+Orchard+Road,+Gatlinburg,+TN/@35.0155395,-84.8154289,9z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x88f53fe559b6b0a1:0x9ba b3fc183165892!2m2!1d-84.6154897!2d34.0234337!1m5!1m1!1s0x885955d14fef59 27:0x11f36a1e3610b849!2m2!1d-83.5127609!2d35.703641!5i1) and is 189 miles / 4:00. Not many twisty-turnies but very scenic from Blue Ridge to Cherokee.

Plenty of time before deciding final routes/rendezvous points, etc. If we can coordinate a caravan from the Dillard area (or points north) that would be great. I'm guessing that my earliest ETA for Gatlinburg will be around 2 PM, later if we stop for lunch. I want to get in early enough to re-acquaint myself with the hotel parking lot, access, traffic flow, etc. Gatlinburg can be a bear with heavy vehicle & pedestrian traffic at certain times of the day but this can usually be worked around by choosing which streets/traffic lights to take.

I hope all the links work ... won't know for sure until I post this and then try on another computer w/a different browser.

It allows me to have the windows down w/o my ears being buffeted, cool air flow, and if you want to hear the song of your (C4)L83, L98, LT1, LT4, or LT5 without rattles ... this thing is the "beeze kneeze"!!

Kaye suggested lunch before the final leg and reminded me that the Valley Café in Dillard would be a perfect lunch stop. The location is on the left just before the Chevron intersection. From there it's about 2 hrs to the hotel.

Hello to the WAZOO and Northeast and WV - ZR-1 Mountain Run 4 participants,

MR4 is 11 days and counting down. We have 10 drivers from our area.

I am assuming that the NE group will be staying in or around Winchester, VA again this year. Is this correct?

For the WAZOO guys, I propose meeting somewhere along I-70, around Frederick and then meet up with the NE and WV guys on Sunday morning. What do you think?

WV guys, do you want to try to meet up with us?

Post on the Forum or "reply all" to our email with your thoughts. I will consolidate the responses.

I know of the I-81 caravan, the Atlanta Metro/N GA caravan, and I think IL/IN ... are there any other caravans?

Anyone driving to Gatlinburg sans caravan?
