View Full Version : The ZR-1s will be defending the TEAM TROPHY on Saturday!!

Just 6 days away now, and the FBI/ZR1 gang will be defending the team trophy AGAIN! This will be a battle - especially beings that three of the big inch guns will not be attending and Pete's MEAN GREAN MACHINE is still "iffy" to make it on time. SO! It's all hands on deck! If ever we needed the likes of Todd and his 427 Z, Saturday would be a good time to be there to race!!:pray

(See East Central Region (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25177) page for track times info, etc.)
See ya this Saturday!!:dancing

"Drag racin' is like a box of chocolates... You never know what your going to get!"
Organizing any FBI gathering is like 'herding cats'! But, gazing into my crystal ball, it looks like-
Bob Gillig
Marc Haibeck
Lee Gafgan (sp?)
Pete P will be there but the car is still very iffy (engine not assembled as of yesterday)
Dominic to show, race = ?
Paul Workman
Robert DeMarco(?)
Karl
(Crystal ball grows dark...)
others???
...
Kevin's car was up and running a week ago (I was told he turned in a 10.3 sec practice pass, but the harmonic balancer is kaput.)
Al's engine isn't together either, and won't be ready by Saturday.
So 3 of the 5 low 10s and 11s cars are down. That means Bob and Marc have to carry the water, and at least one of the "little" 510 hp cars are going to need to make a decent (low 12s is likely; 11.x would be better) pass.
However, it is the best time run in the morning session that is considered. So, if a driver has a bad pass on one (or more) run(s) - misses a shift or whatever - that run doesn't cost the contests if another run is better.

Go FBI. ZR-1s......kicking azz since 1990!
See everyone there. I will drive there, but not racing. My zf wont hold 3rd under load.
This winter its going out to the ZF Doc for repairs and a upgrade.

I hear ya, Karl. Mine sometimes crunches into 5th. I switched to Redline Heavy High Shock per Marc. It might be better. But, I don't need to slam it into 5th very often, and I only notice if I miss 3rd and hit 5th doing a run. However, maybe next winter.
Anyway, be good to see ya. Wish you were racing. With temps in the low 50s, they should run some impressive numbers, IF traction isn't a problem!
BTW... I got an email from Bill (at CPCC) and he tells me the gates won't be open until 9AM...Just soze ya know!
Oh! Everyone: Be sure you register at the trophy tent; sign up under as a member of the ZR-1 REGISTRY CLUB as the club name, soze everyone is on the same page.

Here's to a quick recovery there, Paul. FBI needs to have its star racers sign a waiver that they won't do any work the week leading up to the big event.

Gentlemen,
How did we do? Much chagrined "maximus" as Dominic dubbed him was unable to contribute to the cause. I could not risk the motor with a bad balancer though.
Hope you guys prevailed.......would've been there for fun, but am out of town on business this weekend.

The track is under new management; took over in time to initiate some renovations for this season. But, still have some more to do.
The temps were below freezing the night before, and the C6 accident took place about 10 o'clock ±. I don't know if there was condensation on the cold pavement or not.
And, within a couple passes after they resumed racing is when the C7 got squirrely at about the same spot on the track, actually. That is when Bill (CPCC president) called a general meeting ad cancelled the meet. (Ans, yes, he did offer to return everyone's money, as far as CPCC was concerned. (But, the track management did NOT close down.)
I guess it was a good call: For one, it may have avoided another wreck. But, also...we retain the team trophy until next time, giving all the "big dawgs" a reprieve so they can get well and be ready on the rematch!
Pete! You might like to know that several of the other Chicago Vette club members remember the thrashing your car gave them that first year the ZR-1s came out to play. :-D
Gone now were any of the few snarky remarks about "those C4s" we heard the first couple years before winning the team trophy. Instead, now there were comments among themselves (and to me) to the effect that; "...some of those C4's that showed up here are damn fast!"
And, as I was leaving, one of the Crossroads club members told me they want the trophy back and intend to get it next time out! We'll seeeee!

Good to hear you guys are keeping the trophy for another year . Sorry to see the mahem also . Are there any videos of your runs or previous attempts ? Would be nice to watch if we can't be there ... A couple of my bike buddies plan on using a drone to take footage as we mash around the circuit on our vintage bikes next summer . Should be cool !!!
Congrats again on keeping the ZR-1 C4 on top ...

Love hearing that supercharger winding up! Marc said that after a little "tweaking" he dyno'ed it @ 740 hp. His biggest problem (he says) is learning how to launch it.
I saw Marc make a few passes, and his trap was fairly consistent; in the 133-134 mph realm. However, harking back to his launch quandary, ETs were in the mid 11s. For comparison, Pete's car has trapped in the 129.x mph range in 11.43s at that track in the past, and Kevin, Bob, and Al have tickled 132-134ish mph, clocking between 10.4 and 10.8s in their big-inch LT5s.
So, hopefully before that 'grudge match', Pete, Bob G, Kevin, & Marc; SHOULD be able to set the pace. And, if needed, then Dom, Lee, -=Jeff=, Karl - or myself (or ??) should be able to close the back door (again!) :dancing

NICE run, Lee!
Yep.... One of the "best kept secrets" of the LT5 and their ilk is the power delivery characteristics afforded by the OHC/4-valve architecture: loooong and steady; "pulls like a freight train!" Truly a very fun and unique power delivery, compared to anything I'd experienced prior to owning my 90Z.

Haibeck article on drag racing the Z
http://www.zr1specialist.com/HAT%20Web/Tech%20Info/drag%20racing.htm
Good info from one that knows!
Going back to the temperature of the track, for a moment, both the day that Dom climbed atop the guard rail in his Z, and last Saturday as well, the track (A) was NOT sprayed prior to beginning, AND (B) the temps the night before went down into the upper 20s. However, I've seen videos of Pete running 129 mph @ Byron when temps were low enough to see water vapor from the tail pipes and the breath of the (starter) person was wearing a jacket (and gloves(?) maybe); no hint of slipping anywhere!
(Thinking out loud...) Bolstered by one of the track attendant's comments about the track being wet (as he was dry-mopping the starting line), my hypothesis is the pavement may well have been in a "sweat" (condensation) due to the sub-freezing cold soaking the night before? After the C7 came loose for a harrowing moment (following the C6 accident by about an hour earlier), the Crown Point Corvette Club President called the event.
However, (still thinking out loud) by then it was near 11 AM and the ambient temps were in the mid 40s, and the sun was shining through mostly clear skies. A variety of vehicles, (including Marc) were or had been within minutes making some runs w/o issues, even as the CPCC president was calling off our event. So... I dunno. Questions, questions, questions....

Never fun seeing someone lose their car at the track like that. And the C7Z nearly bought it also. Wonder if the electronic "nannies" saved his bacon.
Of the times I have been to Byron, I may have seen someone lose fluid, but never seen someone hit a wall because of track conditions. I almost lost it in third gear one time at the top of the run after hitting some fluid at the end of the track. I was able to save it and they closed the track for about an hour after that cleaning things up.

I saw car hit the wall in byron.. C5.. but he turned off on of the electronic nannies that caused him to lose it into the wall
