What a weekend....

Joined an event @ New Jersey Motorsports Park with the Porche Club of America (and many fine exotics were there)

At first I was disappointed that the track event wasn't cancelled because of terrible weather (hurricane joaquin) but I ended learning so much in the rain Saturday!!

Here is a video taken by a new Porsche AWD trying to catch up to me on Saturday!!

http://youtu.be/y6cn27c_5p4

This is a video of a friend who is a professional race car driver and instructor driving my car against other race prepped cars.

I have Hawk Ceramic pads installed and they worked flawlessly in the rain. Not only that, minimal dust. Even with heavy use!!!!

Car never ran over 220 degrees. Tires held up great!!! Minimal oil consumption.

Met so many awesome enthusiasts @ the PCA event. Definitely want to return to it next year!!!

Enjoy the videos!

Looks like one heck of a time! Your Z sounded so much nicer in the second vid than the Porsche did in the first. Way to go!

Much prefer road courses to drag strips, methinks

Just me, or was he short-shifting the Z?

Thanks for sharing!!

We caught him but unable to pass. Nobody passed us.

Did my best to represent.

Have to admit. Best time in my car.... EVER!!

HE did short shift a little but he wasn't used to the car and
there were water patches. Todd drove his vintage Lotus
to the extreme, even in marginal conditions!

hey guys! I was David's instructor (and a new owner of a 1990 ZR-1, totally bone stock, which I acquired in feb of this year!). I met David when I reached out for help on drivability issues (mine only has 8k miles on it, and basically had barely ever been driven, so of course the injectors were bad, vacuum issues, etc etc. David helped me change everything that needed doing and now it runs GREAT!!). as soon as I saw his blue monster, I told him "you gotta take that to a Drivers Ed at the track, ASAP man!!!!". and so, we did :)

His car is so much different than mine (more power, better suspension, bigger brakes, short shifter, 4:10 gears) -- biggest thing that was a little tough for me to get used to was his short shifter (which I really liked!) - it's just that with me used to my stock factory one (floppy haha), I had to concentrate when downshifting from 5th to 4th at the end of the straightaway; instead of getting 4th gear I'd get 6th, because in my car 4th is where his 6th is! and yes - I was short shifting his car at about 6k rpm - his is a monster, even at only 6k rpm, and I don't like to beat up on client's cars when I am driving them on track (I'm a pro coach and teach advanced drivers and race drivers how to drive faster/get better lap times at most of the tracks on the east coast. when I drive their cars, I typically only drive them at about 80-90% capability). I could have driven David's ZR-1 much faster, if I'd wanted to :)

oh and the Boss 302? he was ours no problem, but we went in on that lap. I'd shown David what the ZR-1 was capable of when 'unleashed' haha, and I didn't want to use up his tires and brakes too much (that's best left for him to do LOL!).

We both had a great time all weekend (David did GREAT for his first time ever, and especially in the wet conditions! unfortunately we didn't get video of me driving the ZR-1 in the wet chasing around and passing the Porsches and M3s and both Bosses on the first day -- now that was FUN too haha!).

all you ZR-1 owners out there who have never unleashed your cars? and let them do what they were born to do? you don't know what you are missing!!!

Todd

PS my Lotus Super Seven and I were one of the fastest in the Advanced/Instructor Group. basically only the Ferrari Challenge Racecar and a Porsche GT3 Cup racecar were faster. Me and my vintage 40+ year old racecar were like a David and Goliath show hahahaha! (i run a Ford 1600 pushrod crossflow motor LOL)

A great run David! Your ancient ZR-1 was certainly outmuscling the Porches and M3s, and your driving looked excellent. Much more exciting than my run at the NCM Motorsports park last may (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBwKZrENBS0&feature=player_embedded), but it was my first time pushing it a bit, too. Still had a great time, as I am sure you did. Glad you got some dry time as well as wet. --Bob

I agree! Working hard to have mine ready for BG next year if we have another track day like last!

Handheld camera? I'm REALLY surprised the PCA allowed that! Loose objects and handheld anything are a big no-no down here in Peachstate, will get you black flagged immediately.

The car sounds fantastic and I'm glad you had a great time, track days are addictive. Only a matter of time before you take it up a notch and look into racing. :D

Granny shifting extremely early. Did you tell him your powerband is between 5500 and 7000 RPM?

It was fun to watch, Next time you do one of these let me know I will send you one of my Gamin's to Record.

Difference with this event.

We had instructors. Flag persons. And classrom time

It made the event worth all the time and trouble!!!

We definitely should set up a track weekend!!

Just surprises me they allowed it. If there's an incident, that phone becomes a dangerous projectile. If you go back, definitely pick up a GoPro and a suction mount, works so much better.

I have got to get an exhaust on my car, just too damn quiet. Yours sounds fantastic.

I agree--I use a Go Pro mounted with an adhesive mount in the center of an old style harness bar (for old folks who remember him--made by Terry Farber). In fact that is all I use my bar for other than to carry a fire extinguisher. It only attaches to the seat belt mounting bolts so probably not really good enough for belts. And as you probably know I solve the exhaust sound issue with cutouts--listen to my NCM track video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBwKZrENBS0&feature=player_embedded -- it also sounds pretty good when open, but quiet when I want it so. --Bob

Bob,

Great point

I do have a harness bar in the back and planned on buying a new video recorder before the event, but.... I was sure that the weather would cancel the event!! Then the storm moved.

Should have ordered it anyway!!!

Thanks for the advice and I am buying one asap!

The new GoPros are probably okay, but I think there are better/smaller/cheaper cameras available. I've used plenty and my last two purchases have been the Mobius 1080p. I've liked Replay cameras, too.

I had a lot of problems with the first few generations of GoPros. Maybe they have worked out the bugs with their current generations, but I was really unhappy with them after too many disappointments.
