Hello to everybody from Spain. My name is Marcos and I'm the proud owner of one 1.990 ZR-1 Black on Black with 42.000 miles. I bought it last August 2.014 and I'm the fifth owner.

The car arrived to Spain at the end of 1.990 and remain all these years here in Spain with other collectors.

This ZR-1 is in a very good condition. Everything is in original conditions but the last owner improved the car with OBX headers, complete OBX exhaust line, cooling system (aluminum radiators) and reprogrammed ECU because of headers/exhaust line.

I'm a Corvette lover since I was a child and this is like a dream comming true... It's my first Corvette and I'm very proud to be a part of this big Corvette family!!!

I'm going to post photographs next... I hope I can do it!!

All the best from Spain!!

Thank you Vetman!!

And G-Sting, I know only five or six ZR-1 in Spain (members registered in the forum) and I think there are no more than thirty in all the country. During 80's and 90's in Spain wasn't possible to buy a C4 because they were not officially imported. Thank's again for your reports.

First of all, I must recognise that the car I bought in 2014 had a good shape but not perfect. After a lot of years stopped with first owners the car had common problems with basic maintenance. The car could run but it would demands a lot of attention... The last owner previously to me began the Works and in these conditions the car arrived to my life.

First big issue: Front right brake caliper completely blocked. During my first months with the car sometimes the caliper remained blocked for a seconds and when you restart the way, it worked well again not for much time?
Finally, the caliper blocked definitively. That was the tip of the iceberg?

My ZR-1 went for the repair shop for first time and after checking all the brake system the main problem rose up. ABS Bosch Module solenoid become stiff. All the brake lines were obstructed with a lot of filth like mud. I think nobody changed brake fluid never. Solution to avoid future problems?? Changed ABS Bosch Module, all the calipers, all the brake hoses and bleeding complete system with a lot of fresh new brake fluid to clean brake lines.
During this first visit to repair shop, my mechanic found problems with original spark wires and one of four coils. He put all new: AC Delco spark plugs, MSD spark wires and AC Delco original coils. He refresh too alternator pulley because of bad bearing and some gaskets from gas line.

After that, the car won a lot of softness, power and brake feeling.
First step was done. Just now was time to interior detail Works at home...

...it will continue.

Thanks Conesare2Seconds :)

Next chapter was making a deep interior detailing to carpets, mats, leather seats, all the dash and air diffusers.

It was necessary replace switch bezel seat controls because was broken or discolored and some little pieces like bolts, retainers and so.

Roof wrench didn?t in place? Thanks to Corvette Central I could buy one together with ashtray rubber and a bolt interior kit.

After all this work and little pieces here is the result:

Another must to understand and work correctly with ZR-1's is to have original GM Service Manuals (reproductions in this case) and other manuals to complement original GM. I'm refering to Chilton and Haynes manual.

Thanks to a pair of good friends we could find one Tech-1 with all the cartridges. Amazing machine!! And basic to dialog with the car.

Thanks to Dredgeguy and Tiegsd

During all these years common problems appeared. Two times the INFL REST red light turn on after driving through one big storm. Water projected by left front wheel (driver side) plus splash water from lowest part of the car put humidity on airbag sensor assembly to chassis and light came to life...

Laborious work to take out the battery and to clean and protect with dielectric grease all chassis wire connections and, finally, clearing error code with Tech-1.

Today I'm going to post back up switch light problems. During 2019 summer, back up lights gave up. I bought the switch in Eckler's Corvette and after the wait to import the parcel I found the big problem... I could not put any wrench to take off the switch...

Photographs and a little study time with my friend (Camaro's owner) to build a new wrench tailor made...

Hard to take off because of the little space between gear box and exhaust line but after one hour the new switch was in right place and working.

Good morning!

During 2.020 and due to pandemic time and lockdown, all the outdoor activity was cancelled and my ZR-1 was during february in my repair shop to make all the changes to obtain Historical License Plate here in Spain. To obtain this special license plate it's necessary to put all the things like the day the car was born in Bowling Green in 1.990, I mean, It's necessary to change all the lights and electrical wires because in Spain is diferent our way to illuminate cars.

In Spain american illumination system is not allowed. Side rear lights (red ones) are forbiden. Front side lights (ambar ones) too, and in rear end, turn signal can't be red and must be ambar/orange. Front, our positional lights can't be ambar and must be white. My ZR-1 was converted to Spanish illumination system on 1.990, when was first imported, and now I needed to change to your original USA illumination system to make the car historical.

I leaved the car in february and, one month later, the lockdown arrived to Spain and could not recover it until July!! Hards months. During these months it was changed electrical wire system and put red rear lenses. All the front wires were changed because they were in very bad condition. During those five months passenger window switch and main engine glass elevator broke and needed to be changed.

July 2.020 was the reencounter!! Really, after five months was like buying the car again!!

With the car at home, only remained papers with the engineer to justify all the historical administrative file and present to our traffic public institutions. One month more and finally our vehicle inspection to obtain new number/letters license plate with an "H" from Historical.

I'm here again! Hi!!

During 2.020 I decided to solve the problem with original plastic air duct inlet. When your are pushing hard with "pedal to the metal", the duct collapses and the car loose power. When you return to normal speed with no hard pushing the problem disappear.

My original air duct was arched to inside center part.

Thanks to my good friend Jerry from Jerry Gaskets I could solve the problem with Silicone Air Duct.

After installation, the problem of collapse never came back and I could enjoy maximum power without restrictions.

Good morning again?. Today let?s talk about brakes.

During 2.021 I decided to improve brakes because original rotors were still in its place, with a lot of wear, and Road House brake pads installed by last owner were a big trash (negligible braking power with infinite brake stop distance). Bad brake pads with weared rotors were a dangerous combination for ZR-1 performance.

After looking for alternatives always keeping original style and original calipers but improving quality with modern materials, I decided stay here in Europe to obtain all parts from EBC Brakes in UK. Two complete kits (rotors plus brake pads) for both ?axles?, front and rear.

References are:

Front Rotor D7009 with Pads DP41131R.
Rear Rotor D7008 with Pads DP41167R.

That's all!

After few weeks and more or less 1.000 km (621 miles) of peaceful driving to settle rotor surface and brake pads, my new EBC YellowStuff Kit began to show all the improvement. Braking power and feelings are now in consonance with ZR-1 performance. In a few meters you can stop the car with confidence (before with Road House Brake Pads and original rotors was impossible).

From the installation until now brakes become better and better. Just now I can drive in any conditions with total confidence on my EBC's independently on your speed rate.

I'm very happy with results.

It will continue... :dancing

Good morning again?.

My last update was front ball joints and coolant hoses. All original after 32 years, leaking grease on rims and around its place and, what?s more, with an erratic/noisy feeling when you drove trhough bumpy roads. Steering too. I could feel little imprecise movements on steering wheel very unpleasant?

With the rubber coolant hoses the same. Time is unforgiving. The upper left hose (driver side) was leaking coolant near to original clamp. A little fissure around the clamp began to leak coolant over radiator shell. This was only the beginning because radiator had two or three fissures too. It was discovered when we took out hoses and was not possible to repair because of fissure location between ventilation sheets and lower parts had aluminum oxide too, big problem with difficult solution. The radiator was not original one, last owner put one double core aluminum bought on ebay (unknown trademark) more or less during 2.013. We needed to solve the problem with quality parts and DeWitts was the choice.

Taking advantage of the situation with all radiators and shell taked out, complete coolant was drained and restored. We had problems too with one broken nut side thread on air conditioner accumulator and was necessary to put new one from Four Seasons climate control products with complete restored R12 and washers.

We changed too gas filter (Mahle) and serpentine belt (Continental), both from Jerry's Gasket store.

After all the work, the car now runs smoothly and quiet. Stiffness or firmness are the words to describe present driving. Steering become direct and precise. And AC blows cold like never before. year after year we are improving everything necessary.

Some pictures about all of this?

Great read.
Thanks for sharing what you have done.

Out of curiosity, what is the benefit of the historic license plate? Seems a lot of work to achieve it.

1977CamaroZ28
07-29-2022, 03:12 AM
Thank?s Erik

About your question, main things are:

1-. To have special law for classic cars to avoid driving restrictions in big towns because of global warming (Spain has hard and restrictive laws about pollution).

2-. In Spain is mandatory to pass through technical Inspection called ITV (Literally: Inspection Technical Vehicle in spanish) every year when your car has more than ten years. This kind of controls are very hard and aggressive to the cars. With historical license plate you obtain special treatment. First you go to ITV every two year until the car has 35 years. After that ITV every three years (from 35 to 39 years). With 40 years or more, ITV every four years. And ITV inspection is less severe with classic/historical cars.

3-. You obtain special insurances with better prices and coverages than daily cars.

4-. And classic cars are exempt to pay some oficial driving taxes.

Mainly, these are the main points to obtain historical license plate here in Spain.

Good Morning again!! After some weeks of vacation I'm here again with more information about Spanish ZR-1 life!!

At this moment my ZR-1 has few works to do. Mainly, restore original wheels with a lot of damage with curbs (last owners didn't care about it driving inside Madrid streets), the HI-FI System Delco Bose Gold has the amps and speakers roasted and main unit has CD player blocked, but radio and aerial works perfectly. I'm thinking about send all the system to Dr. Don to solve definitely all the problems. And, finally, little things like some weatherstripping or small parts...

Related to last small parts, last November I could find wheel warning inflate sensors in good shape from my good friend Pedro in Madrid. He had one complete kit and we did a deal...

My ZR-1 only has one mounted on left front wheel, green one. I was looking for the rest to install when I will restore wheels. Just now I have all of them and my next step will be send wheels to Barcelona and install all the sensors.

I will keep all of you informed!!

Hi to everybody! After weeks on family matters I?m come back again with my black beast.

Last weekend I did general maintenance. Oil engine service with filter. Main fluid levels, radiator with main reservoir and expansion bottle; brake fluid and clutch fluid. Oil ZF Transmission and routine visual controls in rear differential, shocks, leaks, etc.

First of all and after my last purchase in Mirrock Corvette, I put my new old fuse puller tool in its place. I?m very happy completing my ZR-1 with these little things sometimes difficult to find. Thanks Mark

Good morning, I'm here again.

First of all, thanks Prez1967 for your words. I know that I'm not a expertise with ZR-1 mechanics but I hope this information and basic works will help other first owners with basic maintenance. For other big things I have my expert mechanic and here in the forum there is a big quantity of good and high level information.

In second place, last weekend I found one problem with clutch slave cylinder. I found one leak in the bottom part of clutch bell. First I thought will be oil leak from cranksahft seal to clutch but after checking the leak on the ground it was clutch fluid. Not engine oil. I checked clutch reservoir level and it was near to empty. Only two milimeters. I checked slave cylinder and I saw little leaks (I don't have pictures. I found that so late and I forgot to take pictures to the slave).

Next morning I talked with my mechanic and he confirms me that slave cylinder was still the factory one and near to thirty three years old...

I'm waiting to USPS for a new one to come to Spain. I will keep you informed.

Here you have my only two pictures from the area:

New rear tire bag found in Madrid too. My original one has the top bitten by mouses. I don't know when and how... But the hole is remarkable. I'm looking for a good expertise upholsterer to remake the top of the tire envelope.

I'm back again with the roaring beast!!

Last saturday my mechanic (Toni94ZR1 here in the forum, more than good profesional and better person) change old slave clutch cylinder.

The problem was with the internal washer leaking in the little rubber accordion pleats, and this, in turn, leaking to clutch bell and to the ground.

Without problems to install new piece. After that, some minutes to bleed the system.

Now the ZR-1 is again eating roads... 700 km (435 miles) in a single day.

Hi again!! I'm back with more last saturday morning pictures.

Yesterday I visited my friends at Sanz Sport in Valencia to fix wheel balance problem with pressure sensors installed.

Now it is so hard to find good results because of extra weight in each wheel. Complete sensor weights 230 grams. And for that extra weight it's necessary to spend more time to obtain good results.

After one morning fighting with front right and rear left wheels the car is near to perfection but not perfect.

After this second attemp all the vibrations between 110 Km/h to 140 Km/h desappeared. But now, still remain a very little vibrations between 140 Km/h to 180 Km/h. Very little but perceptible. Next saturday morning we will try again with these two wheels trying to rotate rubber to change "jump wheel moment" to eliminate definitely vibrations.

I know... I recognise... I'm so obstinate to drive my ZR-1 in its original factory conditions, but, if the problem persists, I will return the car to its last situation with only one sensor (front left one) like last eigth years.

Hi again to everybody!!

After working hard this morning we were able to solve tires balance finally.

We have rotated tire on the rim three quarters and after that to the balance machine again looking for a minimal "jump wheel moment".

Both front wheels and left rear needed two tries each.

Now the car is perfect. But I think that future tire wear will easily affect to balance again... I think that next time I will remove sensors to avoid these problems, returning to last situation (only front left sensor installed).

I had to try it!!

Hi again, after some months, finally, I must to uninstall all wheel pressure sensors because of vibrations. I had to try but it has had totally impossible.

Since last wheel balancing in january I have driven, more or less, two thousand kilometers. Each weekend vibrations became more and more heavy. And just now, it?s no way to drive over 120 Km/h (75 mph).

Another visit to my friends at SanzSport in Valencia, all sensors out and, after that, my ZR-1 returns to smooth and finest roll without problems with LTPWS light.

Some pictures from last Saturday:

I?m back again! Last weekend we have had our main gathering here for our Corvette community with Club Corvette Racing Spain (www.clubcorvetteracing.es).

Every year they organize the anual gathering with Corvette owners and other American Car/Truck owners in Vilanova i la Geltru (Barcelona).

This is the one and only gathering in the country because we have only one Corvette Club in Spain.

Here you have some Saturday event pictures. Sunday there are more cars and people but I couldn't stay there.

Thanks Joel!! Good idea!! :)

During all the day many people asked me to open the hood. So many times that I can't remember. Every time the hood was open a circle of people around the ZR-1.

For many people there was their first time in front of a LT5.

While I was near it was not a problem, but I'm not trusted that some hands will touch something in engine bay when I'm taking photographs to other cars or talking with other owners far from mine.

Very understandable. Great car I would not want anyone but yourself messing with it.

Big thanks to Dumitru from Moldova to have had the detail to send me these pictures.

Hello!! This past Sunday we participated in a photo rally with our Horta Classics Club. Thirty-five cars in total.

Good friends and cars from different manufacturers to spend the day following a roadbook and having to answer a series of questions related to the photos we had to find along the way. Each correct 1 point. Each mistake -1 point. Unanswered questions do not count. Departure time 09:30 am and arrival time 13:30 pm. If you arrive out of time, it penalizes 1 point for every 5 minutes of delay. Route of 109 km.

A few photos to put images of yesterday's magnificent day:

The winners did so with a Mini, the second with a Porsche 911 Carrera, the third with a Mazda Miata (MX-5) and the fourth with a Corvette ZR-1.
