Just got my Bill Bordeaux ZF-6 gear shift assembly to replace the entire B&M shifter the prior owner put in.

Looks awesome and the shifts feel great.

Awesome job!!!!!!

So, (reading between the lines and making a guess) ...

The B&M shifter is an improvement over stock, and the Bill Bordeaux ZF-6 shifter is another step up (in quality/performance).

True statement?

How does the Hurst shifter compare?

Since I got my ZR-1 I've been wondering if a replacement aftermarket shifter would be better. I'm especially not fond of the reverse lockout design. Not very ergonomic (for me, anyways).

The b&m is a step back from stock. They don't even make it anymore. From what I hear Hurst and Bill are both top notch. Bill was easy to deal with and has a great reputation also.

My son owns a 350Z. When he gets a chance to drive my ZR, he always comments how he likes the positive "notchiness" of the Hurst. Very mechanical feel of it going into gear. I have had 2 of them and loved them both. Did not have opportunity to try either the ZFdoc or B&M.

I've tried both. Bill's short throw shifts the best as stated the other shifts better than stock.

Great info.

Does Bill Bordeaux have a web site?

The Hurst shifter is also designed by a ZR-1 owner that used to be on this forum.
I got one of the first batch, before he sold the design to Hurst.

Very good short throw shifter.

I had a Hurst in my 89 and have one in my 90.. I have thought of buying a Bill B one to try. but I have been happy with the hurst

I just did a full stage 2 rebuild of the T56 in my 04 ctsv. It still shifts like junk compared to my ZFs. After so many years Ive come to the conclusion that the ZF is not only good.. its super awesome.

I had the B&M and its not bad. To me it was too notchy. the shift effort went up a lot and it was short. I liked it back when I was 20 yrs old. But the darn thing rattled like crazy. there was no isolation in its linkage etc. I got a Hurst for my friends car 8 years ago and drove it several times (96 lt4) and really felt it was a no brainer that it was the way to go. It wasn't too much shorter than stock, but has shorter throws, adds a bit of effort which I liked. WHen I got my Z I had a Hurst ordered while I was driving home from looking at the car ;)

I also have a ZFdoc short shift on my brand new blue tag I had him modify to handle the 8k rpm solid roller I built in my 93 and I love that shifter too. I cant really compare since Ive only had Bills on a 0 mile and modified zf (when gm dumped stock I bought one) vs a 65k mile trans but they are relatively similar. I haven't driven the 93 in 8 year so I cant really try and do a detailed comparison.

do you still have the 93?

Yessir !! I have considered parting it out and the motor and building the LT5 or doing the callaway aero body and painting the car silver and rebuilding the wheels to 20s with a nice brushed step lip.. Oh the ideas :) More than likely since the car is already built up I'll be dropping the motor in this fall or early next year.

Amazing how we all have different experiences and liking to products. I had my Hurst all these years in my 90 (over 12 years) and love it, but I bought this 95 that came with a B&M and much better for me. I like how easy it is to get into each gear, including reverse and how much more confidence with power shifting. No rattles or noise, just a louder click into in gear.

The B&M unit:

The zf doc unit is much smoother imo and the main reason I switched shifters.

Thanks for sharing. If I start to have problems with mine, I'll ship the stock one in the box to the ZF Doc. Bill B is awesome to work with and knows his stuff.

As I suspected and fairly obvious when you look at short shifter mechanics.. you can see the length difference between the B&M vs hurst and oem from the pivot point to the linkage piece that goes into the ZF. I don't know all the technical terms but as you can see.. this would raise the shift effort and make the shift throws shortest (also changes/increases the angle of the link piece that goes into the zf. The Hurst length is an in between oem and B&M. I tried to size the pics as close as I could on my phone

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing Mike! I dunno, I still really like my B&M shifter and wondering how much difference it makes from person to person based on size, driving style, seating position, etc. The B&M works much better for me than the Hurst in my 90. Not sure what other factors make it feel better. I had to run an errand today so I ran through the gears and not sure what I would want to improve on it, but good to know all the comparisons out there for our cars. We could always be like one member here building their monster LT5 with a sequential transmission/shifter (all his stuff is XXXXXX PORN) and not have to worry about it....ha, ha. I don't have that kind of coins in my piggy bank.

here we go.. all the C4 options (well B&M if you can find one I believe theyre discontinued)

Based on what I see:

B&M shortest throw and highest effort.

Hurst shorter throw and shorter height that oem

ZFDoc Shorter height than oem, throw/effort very close to Hurst, Retains vibration damper of stock shifter.

Oem : throw it in the garbage

Very welcome !:) I do like the B&M myself and it could very well have been a non-balanced LT1 I had at the time that caused the vibration through the shifter or the resurfaced dual mass when I put a centerforce in my 93 car (15 years ago or so). The shift effort being highest is not necessarily a bad thing. for me that gives a very positive engagement and solid feel especially when getting into a gear. I honestly wish I kept it. I ended up selling it with the black tag I had in my 93 car when I bought a new blue tag.

Thanks for your thoughts and I know you can drive as evidenced by your videos. I thought about having surgery and shortening my right arm, but I was not sure if that would help me. :dontknow:
