1st of all don't judge me. I don't show my car, I drive it so it is not in show car condition.

Filled the car w/fuel and several days latter when washing it opened to fuel door to find a big hole. The fuel filler neck and boot were gone, looked down in the hole and about 12" down was the tank, rotated towards the back of the car.
Local Corvette mechanic says he has never seen anything like this, in ANY Corvette, let alone a ZR1. We are siphoning the fuel out of it and taking the back of the car off next weekend to see what has happened. Luckily the tank is sitting on the frame rail so it won't completely fall out of the car, fingers crossed.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening, in ANY Corvette???

Mystified in State College 1990 Polo Green ZR1 44K miles

I have 20,000 more miles on my car then you do, but no I've not heard of this happening before.

Edit: sounds like the straps that hold the tank in place either rusted or were replaced and over tightened thus snapping them.

I would pull the spare tire carrier and look at things from underneath before yanking the rear end.

XfireZ51,

Spare tire carrier has already been pulled. That was the first thing done. We're at step 2 now.

Would be my idea as well and never seen that happen as well

UPDATE: Straps did not break, rust or snap. Tank did not "fall"... Fuel tank imploded!
