I'm new to the forum & currently own 2 1996 LT4s: a CE coupe & red/tan vert. I've always liked the C4 style & the time is right for a ZR-1.
In looking at a number of posts I see lots of mods that are popular, but what do you really "need?" I'm not gonna do any serious high performance driving or put on a lot miles.
I'm looking for Torch Red, Yellow or Aqua with any interior EXCEPT black; lo miles. Would appreciate any advice as well. :handshak: Located Los Angeles area.
Thx

Welcome......In regards to modifications.....it all depends on if you want to enjoy the driving as well as the wrenching. If you do not "wrench" then probably NO modifications are necessary.....just drive it :p

OMG Dynomite, you're makin my head spin! I checked out some of that stuff & it's neat. I enjoyed the wrenching years ago on C2s, C3s, Chevelles, but at this point, I just wanna turn the key & drive.
I susepct there's a few things like a Haibeck chip to do, but I want to keep as much stock as possible.
You gotta cool '90:cheers:

A stock car will do just fine for years of enjoyment more than capable on the street. Than you will get the bug for more HP. If you buy a modded car you will save in the long run. Good luck in your hunt.

Guess I'll have to grow into it first, then grow out of it into the mods. Can't wait…I think.

Can't help with Torch Red, Yellow or Aqua, but I do have a very nice Polo Green/Beige 95 for sale. I wasn't actually looking for a green one either but it came up at the right time so I bought it. It is low (31k) mileage, one of the last produced, stock appearing with about $25k of service and performance upgrades by the Marc Haibeck, the ZR1 Specialist. They include his 350/510 HP package (powerful but very reliable), 4.10 gears, a short throw but stock looking shifter and Michelin Pilot Sport tires. It is listed in this section (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24540 (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24540)) and there are plenty of pix and details about it. Also, many of the Net Registry members are familiar with it and/or have driven it if you have questions. And many members know me as well. I would be glad to talk with you about it if it is of interest.
No one actually needs modifications. In terms of what modifications, if any, you might want I can tell you what I have been through in 20 or so years of ZR-1 ownership. Your mileage may vary. I have had stock and done some simple bolt on mods like the short shifter and 4.10s. Then I wanted more power and went to headers and a Corsa Exhaust. Ended up with about 440-450 HP on my 93, which I sold in 2007 to a Registry member. When I decided to get back into the ZR-1 world in 2011 I decided that I absolutely wanted a stock late production 95. I found it after a year of searching, brought it here to Chicago, had Marc service it and do some of the bolt-ons I mentioned. Fine for a year or so but eventually I kept yearning for more power and kept lusting after the engines that had Marc's 510 HP letters emblazoned on the engine. It is a disease. Also my a stock 95 had a pretty crappy finish on the engine so I wanted it refinished. So I bit the bullet and had Marc do the work. It has been Great!! I rarely race it (drag raced it once, ran a 1/2 mile race and ran touring laps last NCM Motorsports Park at the Gathering this month; here's a video of that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBwKZrENBS0&feature=player_embedded). Otherwise it is a daily driver when the sun is out (not much here in Chicago this year!) I suggest you ask others on this forum who have had Marc's 500/510 or similar engines done to see how they like them. Great but not unmanageable power. BTW, it was originally a California car and could be put back to stock appearance and likely made to pass emissions with the take off parts I have.-Bob

Thanks Dynomite, an MD sounds like a great idea.
WarpTen, that's a beautiful car & I had considered that combo as well, not at top of my list. I'll think about that, is it a big deal to get past emissions?
.
Thanks guys:cheers:

My 91 has Marc's 510hp package with after market cats and still passes Ga emissions.

Hi Silverfox1--I fully understand--color choice is a personal preference. Let me know if you change your mind.
As I mentioned, I had not intended to get a green one either, but the condition, availability and price made me go for it. It was a completely stock car, but had there been one available at the time with all the modifications like mine has in a different color I would have bought that one. I think Polo/Beige is a really nice color combo now. The same thing happened when I bought HIL KING in 1994. I was not looking for a Quasar Blue car, but all of the above plus timing conspired for me to get it. Grew to love the color. In my old age I am thinking that almost al the ZR-1 colors are easy to love if everything else fits. On emissions, as We Gone said, his 510 passes. Marc can make almost any Z pass emissions and my car comes with all the takeoff parts like stock manifolds and cats, AIR and EGR stuff, etc.--Bob

Thanks We Gone & Warp Ten. I think CA is the toughest for emissions standards, & I want to try to stick with a "virgin" altho gonna be harder to find, I suspect. I have time, so I can wait for the right one. Thx :Eagle:

Finally have a few ZR-1s to consider.
#386 in Franklin TN, 21k mi, red/red (my fav), 2-Dunn, 2 tops, original tires which is interesting considering mileage. Described as "flawless." Inspection next Monday. IF car has good mechanicals, what are issues at that mileage? Asking $31,000 which seems reasonable.
Also, #387 in Chicago. 7,400mi, 2-Dunn, polo/tan, maintained by Haibeck. Asking $43,500. Very little price flexibility. Initial pics are beautiful.
My initial impression between the 2 are expect to put $2-$5k into #386 regardless of inspection report. BUT those are my colors & it is a Dunn car. Both cars will require new tires & unless I decide to go Top Flight, I'd try to get a few bucks for the originals.
QUESTIONS: Did the 2-Dunn heads "add" any hp/torque to the stated 405hp?
Floormats: my understanding is that OEM mats were plain, just the color of the carpet, no logos. Is that correct?
Thanks all & happy 4th! :cheers::proud:

You are correct on the floormats--just plain matching the carpet color. Dunn heads are discussed extensively in other posts here but the simple answer is they added very little if any extra power--certainly no discernible difference from the Brimals. Once you have porting done like mine and others, any difference is irrelevant anyway. --Bob

I seem to remember reading on the Registry site that there was an advantage to the Dunns, maybe just efficiency. I'll look at the threads here.
Thanks

If you are wanting an NCRS car. Buy a judging manual and read it throughly multiple times.
Everybody says stock "iincluding myself" however always something missing or not right.
Take it from me getting a car to NCRS TF Status can be expensive, especially the little whatnot parts.
I've got two cars that are NCRS zr-1s, if your like me that's too many to keep in that status quo!
Buy from an NCRS member who understands what it takes, I promise these owners know their cars better than most.
Cars are only original once, and knowledgeable Corvette people know the difference between cars that have been modified and put back to original from cars that have been untouched cars since birth.
Best of luck in your search.

My first priority is enjoying the car. I'm not necessarily looking for Top Flight material, but would be nice. I've got 2 super '96 LT4s, multiple show winners (CE coupe & vert) w/F45 right now & I'm done trying to find the correct bolt to make it "right." Obsessing is a dangerous compulsion.

I wouldn't get too cought up in the Dunn head hoopla, there are few 95s that have one of each. That $43+ for that Polo 95 is at the very top of the price scale and isn't this the car that has a few minor issues, something doesn't work can't remember what and it has one of those goofy SPEC stickers on the ashtray door? If this isn't the car my apologies for any confusion on this car. For close to $45K you will be able to find a car with close to no miles. Just sit on your cash and the right car will find you. One thing about us hardcore Z owners, we know of most of the cars that are floating around. Good luck on your search!

One other thing, if you can wrench on a car a ZR-1 won't be any problem. Lots of people see that motor and run but we owners know differently.

I haven't actually seen #387, but 1 of the pics showed the driver floor mat with a silver circle C4 logo ala Collector Edition type…..REALLY. The Dunn head thing wouldn't be a make or break & I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for it.
I'm really liking that #386 at $31K & at 21k mi the price seems in line. Any sources online to find out more about it. There's another red/beige in NJ w/ 21k mi asking $33.9 but I dont have the # yet.
Thanks :cheers::usa:

If #387 is Bob Atkins car...one of the cleanest cars you'll find. Great guy too.
Search #386 on Atlanta Craigslist. Fact only, it's been for sale a while.
A red/red #19, one owner, just popped up here in Vegas (Vette Finders). I could check it out if needed.
I'm one of the few that appreciate Dunn heads.

Thanks for the info Ted. Will let you know about #19 - miles? $$? I'll know more #386 next week after inspection - it's a purty car.

Agree but that's his initial asking price.
Funny with the #s. I had #385. Wouldn't mind still having it.
