Finally hit 50 today here in Chicagoland. And SUNNY. Couldn't resist, so I grabbed the keys and started the car. Quick start-up "flare" and settled into its warm-up routine with a gradual slowdown in rpm until it finally went Closed Loop at about an 850rpm idle.
WB O2 indicating 14.7:1. Let it warm up until fan kicked on at 88C, then coolant temps started to drop. Shutoff.

Started it yesterday, but did not move it out of the garage. Got 10 quarts of oil and an oil filter to change next week if it's warm enough. Today is cold and rainy, not as encouraging as it was yesterday.
And so it goes....Jim

I've taken both the ZR-1 and the ZO6 out several times over the past few days. We've had an unusual amount of rain this winter as well as being colder than normal but nothing like what some of you folks north of the Mason-Dixon have been experiencing. OTOH, we had the worst ice storm in over a century during Valentine's week in 2014 ... my community was paralyzed and isolated for over a week ... no heat, no fuel, no restaurants, no grocery stores, and the banks couldn't open (no ATM's either). We were trapped on my street on 2 different occasions when the 100 ft tall pine trees snapped off and blocked the roads. Yes, we survived but it's not something I would want anyone to have to experience. Enough of past history ....
The ZO6 was anxious for the exercise and the excuse to show me how fast she could make it to triples. So was the ZR-1 but the black beast seems to have developed a vacuum leak under the plenum ... started trying to isolate it today, hoping it might be outside the plenum, but no such luck. I'll have a stab at it tomorrow. Might be time to consider deleting the secondaries ... Paul, where are you? I need advice.

With key on.....pull that center Plenum Vacuum line between the middle runners on the Drivers side and hold your thumb over the rubber connector you pulled. If the vacuum pump stops cycling you have found your leak. It is the Vacuum Check valve under the Plenum.
Thanks ... will check this tomorrow (time permitting) or Thursday. With key on I capped the vac line between the pump & plenum and it held fine (I once had a leak at that connector). With key on and everything hooked up normally the pump cycles every 5-6 seconds now ... slow leak somewhere.
Your best bet is to block TB Coolant at the Injector Housing so you can pull the plenum in 10 minutes or less. And nothing on the Plenum gasket such as sealants of any kind.....and not too much torque on the Plenum Bolts.
I have the TB Coolant bypassed ... do I still need to drain off some coolant?
What about a complete coolant bypass? yes or no? difficult?
I would leave Secondaires because it is soooooo much fun to have that Full Power Switch operational
If I can fix the vac leak, this would be preferable. Thanks for the help.

We are getting two good soaking rains here in N. VA this week, so hopefully it will melt all the remaining snow piles and wash some of this salt and sand off the road. Hope to get the new 380 out to a Cars / Coffee on Sunday :dancing Got to get this motor broke in before BG!

Hi George--
Sorry to hear about the weather. Hasn't been too warm up here but we didn't have the difficulties you mention.
When Marc did his 510 package on Warp Ten he removed the secondaries and I have been happy with the setup. No problems; the car has been completely reliable, idles smoothly and runs strong. I recommend it. --Bob

I hesitate to show Technical "How To" in this Who started their ZR1s thread as some guys just want to discuss weather after all this IS not the ZR-1 Technical Postings Section :p
But to reiterate given I deleted the "How To" Posts in this thread.....I have eliminated the Secondary Vacuum System and Secondary Mechanical System in a 91' and it runs great with Marc Haibeck Chip (Got to have the Chip installed if you eliminate Secondaries). I completely concur with Bob and Paul in that regard to the Secondary Delete Modification. If you are really after Horsepower, eliminating the Secondary Plates in each Secondary Port gives you more unrestricted Air Flow.
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/dynomite007/LT5/SecondaryVacuumSys-1.jpg
On the other hand.....in three other 90's I have kept the Secondaries for the simple reason the Secondary Vacuum System and Secondary Mechanical System are sooooo easy to maintain and once maintained no issues at all for a very long time with the Vacuum Pump coming on with Key on for a few seconds and never hearing the Vacuum Pump again.
Having the Functional Full Power Switch and on the 90's having that Full Power show up on the Screen is all part of having a ZR1

I started mine last night, but maybe for the last time for a while. I'm starting to prep it for a paint job. Seems a shame, timing-wise, with the warm weather arriving and my ZR-1 running so well, but it will be nice to have a shiny Corvette in a month or so.
I think this is close enough to the thread topic: Last week I started my car and was immediately shocked and dismayed by a lot of mechanical noise. I immediately thought there were serious problems inside the engine and started to think it would need to come out and be repaired.
I started it again very briefly to check oil pressure. Gawd the sound was awful. Oil pressure seemed normal.
I took out all the spark plugs and let the engine spin freely with the starter motor. It didn't sound as bad but still sounded abnormal.
All of the plugs looked okay. I did a compression test and all cylinders tested well.
I put it all back together, started it up and after a few seconds it sounded normal.
That was a pretty scary night. Afterwards, I browsed ZR-1.net and based on what I read, it might have been the dual mass flywheel. Since then the car has run great.

I know what you mean with the sound as probably ALL the lifters that were under open valves when you last shut the engine down were collapsed :p
I like your idea of removing plugs and spinning the crank with the starter motor. That should pump up oil pressure but when you think about it.....plugs in or out the engine will have to spin equal number of times to get oil pressure to the lifters in any event.
But then again, the cam lobe is hitting the collapsed lifter at a much slower speed when you do exactly what you did by removing the plugs and spinning the crankshaft much slower with the starter than when the engine is fired up. That would result in a lot less banging/sound
Once the collapsed Lifters are pressured up with oil, you are good to go
I am thinking most lifters bleed down very very very slowly so it may take a month or more.
Good Idea for a ZR1 that has been sitting for several months or more......:handshak:
Thinking more......:D
A camshaft turning at 3,000 rpm (engine at 6,000 rpm) would be hitting the lifters with a lot more force/acceleration than when hitting the lifter when idling at camshaft rotation of say 400 rpm. So I am not so sure the banging on a cold start with some collapsed lifters is so bad at all.

Mine needs a new battery before I can start it
Mebby not. I've brought several back from the dead (reading zero volts!) with my old fashioned "dumb" battery charger; batteries that my "Whoop-dee-doo" automatic charger has pronounced "kaput!".
So...if it hasn't been in the grave too long, and as long as one of the cells hasn't shorted out (indicated by loss of one or more 2.1 volts/cell). Don't throw it away yet, unless the store is offering a big credit for the tired ol' thing (unless you have or can find an "oldie but a goodie "dumb" charger of your own?).
This is the 10th season for Ami's WalMart battery. And, due to a bad courtesy light switch in one of the cubby-holds that drained the battery totally flat (twice!), I was able to revitalize it both times. Still cranks the L46 like a new battery! Juuuuust a thought.;)

Paul learned the hard (i.e. expensive) way that it's best to go solo on the mountain run ... Ami had more fun in the mountains last year than anyone else and decided she needed her own ZR-1 ... and I think her Z is a bit "badder" than Paul's, but I'll let him chime in on this.

Got the Z out for her first run since the glaciers receded enough to clear the garage area. She didn't miss a beat and said "hello" to anyone listening from a mile or so! Took her to a local watering hole that makes the best burgers anywhere, and when I came out she had drawn a crowd of locals trying to guess what year it was. "Is it new?" (I love that one. Opened the door on my car, the handle worked great. Sat in the seat next and it supported my butt cheeks perfectly. Put the key in the ignition and it turned very smoothly while the engine fired up and settled to a silky smooth idle. The dash lights shined perfectly bright. I closed the door and the latch gave out the perfect thud sound. The dash needles gave the absolute perfect indications. The weather outside is 62.8 degrees, 52.1 % humidity, the barometric pressure was 29.92 inches of mercury, the sun hit the paint on my hood in just the perfect way. I was able to back out into the driveway 57.1 feet because I gave it a good wash with my garden hose at 32 psi of pressure. My BP was 120 over 80, breathing 21 breaths per minute. But hell if I am going to drive it just yet with that riot going on in my neighborhood.
