View Full Version : Simple oil question?

I have 61,800 miles on the 94, is there any concern using MOBIL 1 high mileage 10W-40 for the LT-5, even though it is formulated for 75000 miles and above?
Right now i have MOBIL 1 5W-30 in the engine. I know that the Amsoil AMO 10W-40 seems to be the preferred choice for our engines, but am curious about the oil in question.
Thanks for any info.....

best oil you can use because of the high zinc content. it provides lubrication to the cam chains and it can be bought at any walmart. it is the best and its what I use.

Thanks for the reply Ed, one of my Walmart's did not have the 10W-40, I have two more to check tomorrow. Pep Boys has it in stock but for $39 a gallon. I do have my Pep Boys coupon that gives me either $25 off $100,
$15 off $75, or $10 off $50 for any purchase in the store. So I can use that to bring the cost down and I think on another thread here or CF, that there is a rebate being offered for MOBIL 1 for awhile.
Also reading the label on the High Mileage, noticed that there are sealant additives in the oil to help prevent leaks, hence maybe the 75,000 mile designation. It's not like out engines say ok we are at 75,000 now, and you need sealant additives, because you are going to start to leak oil. Guess I am being my anal self and over cautious....:)
I know the oil debate has been beaten to death, but always enjoy other opinions as well......

Click HERE (http://www.zr1specialist.com/HAT%20Web/articles/Modern%20Motor%20Oil%20and%20the%20LT5%20Engine.pd f) for a good discussion of oil and the LT5.

Mobil 1 High Mileage is listed as acceptable for the LT5 engine with OE valve springs. Amsoil AMO 10-40 is recommended for the LT5 as it has the optimum zinc formulation. This is why a number of ZR-1 owners use/recommend Amsoil. The M1 High Mileage is readily available at my local wallyworld but I can also get Amsoil from a local farmer who uses it in all his diesel engines ... and his price for the Amsoil is close enough to the Mobil 1 that I'm happy using Amsoil.

I worry about anything I can buy at Wal-Mart. It just seems to devalue it.

Steve, now you've got me worried that perhaps I shouldn't have applied for the greeter position at our local WallyWorld. They promised me 20% on all oil/filter purchases

mobil 1 is mobil 1 whoever sells it. it has a very high zinc content which is what we are looking for because of our cam chains. trust me I was an amsoil dealer years ago and I do love amsoil but why blow more money if I can get a great high zinc synthetic for much less at walmart. I would never skimp on a oil just for price,, quality is always first with me when maintaining my zr1. either one is good.

I think the reason the high-mileage formulation are advertised for 75000 mi and up is because that's about when the govt mandated warranty for catalyst lifespan expires.

Read the back of a Mobil 1 15-50 container. Contains high Zinc content for high performance engines. Bought at Wally-world for $26 for a 5 quart container. A lot cheaper than amsoil. My $.02 worth.

There are a few other Mobil 1 flavors that might suffice (come close to the "magic 1200/1300 numbers) if the 15/50 is not available: See Mobil 1 Product guide.

Very funny Cliff. Actually, Marvel redeposited metal onto the lobes that were pitted and scored. They're just like new. And yes, Pete's regrinds. 2012-13 winter we added the exhaust cams.

Wow...two really pervasive rumors in this thread.

1) Marvel Mystery oil "deposits" metal on camshaft lobes.

A myth.

2) LT5s require engine oils with high zinc/phosphorous content

Another myth.

Insufficient ZDDP in engine oils is only an issue with flat tappet cams and pushrod valve gear. LT5 is OHC so 800 PPM phosphorous is plenty. The idea that you need an oil with 1000-1500-PPM phos or your engine will fail is ridiculous.

Best oil to use in an LT5 for street high-performance and occasional tracking is an ester- or -mPAO based 10W30 synthetic. Such products are available from Gibbs Driven, Red Line, Amzoil and others and they'll all have 800-1100 phos which is plenty. Regular old Mobil One 10W30 is less expensive but, also, a good choice and it will have 600-800 PPM phos.

if tracking the car all the time a 10W40 is better.

I will cancel my order for a Case of Marvel Mystery Oil then :handshak:
