View Full Version : New starter spins, no flywheel engagement

Ok, new ZR-1 owner here, starting with the basics to improve rough running engine - coils, plug wires & injectors, and trying to do all the right stuff while the plenum was off. I even removed the secondaries and installed a chip from Marc H.

So tonight, pretty excited to hear it run after doing all the work - turn the key, starter spins but it's obviously not engaging the flywheel teeth.

My assumption is the NEW (well, rebuilt) Bosch starter from Napa is NFG, and I suppose the plenum and coils will need to come back out so I can get to the starter and see what's wrong.

Would you agree? Can you think of anything I might have done wrong, or should do now?

I'm kicking myself because my old starter was probably fine. I went into Napa to buy starter "refreshening" parts, and the counter guy talked me into a new starter.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ending note: I'm a bit bummed, but on the other hand, I know it will be great once it's working (I just need to be patient), and this second plenum pull will be tons easier than the first time (working with clean parts, no secondary tubing, etc.).

Get your old/OE starter back from the NAPA guy if at all possible. You don't want to sacrifice it for the core. Disregard if the one you removed was already a reman but I believe it's unlikely that it was. You had the right idea when you were looking for parts to "refresh" the OE if it was.

Hope you get it sorted out. Post 3 scroll down to starters, even has a link to a new one on e-bay.
