I heard that ZR1s had special windshields....From the factory
Did it have a square cut out in front of the steering wheel..? Meaning,
When you look at it you can see a square section that is a different shade from the rest of the windshield...

yes, the cut out was said to be for garage door opener, more likely radar detector. My understanding the delamination problems stems from a special ZR1 only UV ray blocking process or something along that line, ( GM = oops ! ).

Yep, early cars had a wider opening. I think the delamination is from improper handling and prep. GM also had this type windshield in a van (can't remember the name Astro I think) and it did not have any issues.

Yes, due to packaging issues created by the larger LT-5 engine, the engineers needed to save space, and one of the ways they did that was by employing a smaller (and less effective) AC compressor. In order to assist the smaller compressor, they used a special UV-protection laminated windshield to cut down on interior temps. The cutout in front of the wheel allows radar detectors, door openers, etc. to transmit without interference. There were 2 differently-sized cutouts: the larger (earlier) one and the smaller (later) one. The windshields tend to delaminate due to poor assembly techniques.

Since original replacements are anywhere from $1800 to $3k it's pretty typical for owners to swap out for a standard C4 windshield.

Yep! I replaced mine with a standard tinted windshield. Works fine and looks much better than the stock one, which was delaminating. Cost me ~ $600 installed, including seals.
However, I didn't like the seal provided by Lifelite, so I had one from Corvette Rubber installed instead. (approx $150, if I recall correctly) The Corvette Rubber seal is MUCH closer to the stock firmness, which is very important to avoid problems with interfering with the window operation or closing the door.
