View Full Version : Seat opinions needed (94-96 STD or Sport)

This inquiry is only regarding the 94-96 Standard and Sport seats. I know many think the best seats are 90-93, but for the purpose of this thread this again is only 94-96
So I currently have 94 Sport seats in my vette. I like them but I really want two tone, current seats are black and while I like them I would like the two tone style. the problem is I don't think the sport style stitching likes right in a two tone.
The 94 Standard seat look great to me in two tone. I would be doing black with red inserts..
The dilemma I have is with the side bolsters, I like the sport seat side Bolster depth over the standard, I also like the lumbar and adjustments.. but I prefer the Standard style. now I have modified the foam for one standard seat and have fit it to the sport frame (had to modify the sport frame too). I think for me the best set-up would be the standard seat with lower sport side bolster, however, I think there would be too high of a cost for the custom leather...
here are some pictures of the comparison between the 2 seats (oh these are not the seats in my car currently These are extras I have)

So would you pursue the custom standard with deeper bolster? modify the sport frames for the Standard seats?
If you did custom leather, who would do it? I found the 94-96 seats are leather seating surface only, sides and backing are vinyl
Here is what I did with my 94 sport seats..... retro bucket style.

So I want to order the seats
Here are my ideas/options:
1) sport seat design but two-tone
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WfOftmE-W4M/VJrQp3jtupI/AAAAAAAAGVE/_LGenphafT4/w400-h300-no/2-tone%2Bseat.JPG
Colors as pictured
2) base seat design, but sport seat side bolsters
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-USfVgySHZ30/VJrQqHoDWrI/AAAAAAAAGVE/BVenNAQRk0o/w300-h297-no/base%2Bstyle.JPG
Yellow would Red on the above
Also would you do perforation on either?
SO would you just do the Sport seat covers or the Custom Base style? I have the foam to cut chop and modify for the custom base ones
Thoughts?

Looking at the foam and such I think the sport oem style is the way to go. Need to fix some foam on a set of seats first
Maybe all red and not 2-tone
The stock sport seat doesn't look like much, but they are definitely comfortable on long trips. I like the red/black sport seats shown above.

IMO, fit and function trump the differences in "look", in this case. Both look good, I guess.
That said, I like the standard seats for the 90-93s very much, especially compared to the 90-93 sport seat: comfort being the key factor for the 90-93s. But, based on lateral experiences with harder than I'd say the average driver ever experiences, the bigger bolsters on the back would be nice to have: more secure, me thinks.
JMO, I like the looks of the standard seat so much better than even the 94-96 sport seats. For me, having my cake and eating it too would put me in favor of beefing the standard side bolsters.
That's my vote, FWIW.

So looking at my seats, apparently the second set I have as 2 driver side bottoms. I iwll ned to find a pass side bottom foam or modify one of them

Also suggest while you are there seat heaters. That's my next project as I bought a pair of carbon fiber heat inserts for mine but have not installed them yet. The buttons look factory as well and fairly small. For me it's not so much for the warmth as they are for the direct heat to my back and rear lol.
I have heated seats in both my truck and my wife's mercedes I thought they were a useless option until I started using them and I really miss not having them now in my daily driver. So Jeff if I may suggest.

Struggling with what I want to do.. I have a set of perfectly good black seats in the car. I don't want to disassemble those..
I have a pair of sport frames with foam except I have 2 bottoms for the same side.. (forget if it is DS or PS)
I have one modded sport frame to fit the base seat.
my original thought was to cut the sport foam and use it with the base foam and make a set of custom seats.. not sure how easy that would be to do, but I know the base seat will fit the sport frame with some tweaking to the foam.
I have a complete set of correct foam for the base seats.
the sport seats are overall 'flatter' than the base seats, the base has a distinct side bolster on the back and bottom. That is why I though of doing a custom seat, the base seats are NOT Glued but hog ringed. my biggest concern is if I bought sport covers and trying to get them to fit and stay put on the foam (gluing)
My Base foam is not the best 100% but I can fix most of the issues with it and I can carve out the back of the foam to fit the lumbar.. I can make the sides fit.. maybe I need to just start cutting the foam.. it is not like I am ruining a perfect pair of seats..
GC Thanks for the tip on the heaters, I really want seat coolers though.. LOL

Alright, I think I have a plan.. need to hack up some stuff first, if it does not work then I need to want until I can buy foam and leather together..
I have hacked some foam up but need to cut up more and mend it together to see if my plan will work

I still wanna know the weight difference between early and later seats.
Jeff if you heck some seats up I don't need the electronics to work/side bolsters etc, keep me in mind.

I can weigh a later seat
-=Jeff=-
12-27-2014, 12:44 PM
Pete, I will weight the sport seat (94) before i take it apart
I am making progress.. I will be using the Standard covers, modded. since they are hog ringed and not glued to the foam. I have one sides foam almost complete and I found a guy that will do the covers for me.. he can make them as I want and they look good from the sample pictures he sent.
I will call him this next week to discuss what I want done and such..
here is my standard foam with lower sport bolster

Hey Pete,
I was reading through a couple threads and found this posted by Locobob:
Currently I have base model seats out of a 94-96 with power tracks. I find them comfy and pretty supportive but the leather quality on them is pretty poor. I'm a bit of a weight nazi so I decided to see where they fall - bathroom scale so not super exact....
Power track only = 15lbs
Seat without track = 20lbs
Seat with power track = 35lbs

Oh, yeeeaaaaaah! I really like that one too, Jeff; with or w/o the script. Wow!
I too prefer the standard seats - especially to the 90s(!!!) sport seats.
That's the seat w/o the script. I got to get my hands on some nice standard seat's and get them done up with nice leather etc. If anyone knows some F/S drop me a PM please.

Everything.. these seats have mostly base foam except the lower side bolsters.. I cut those out and used Sport side bolsters, so these are a bit deeper bolster then the OEM Base seats..
I also cut the back of the foam to fit the lumbar bladders and such

May be it's just me but I prefer the sport seats in my '92. When I sit in them I feel as though I am part of the car. When I am driving I have a better feel for the road and the cars performance. No offense but I think the later seats, '94-95 were designed for older wider buyers.
Just a personel opinion.
