’89 build

I just wanted to share where my build is at. The drive train has been removed from the donor body and the engine bay cleaned up. The motor ’89-10 has had a first round of cleaning after having pulled first the plenum and the accessories. Clutch looks good so it is staying. Coolant came out as if it were just put in. Picking and choosing what to replace since it is apart and what to leave as is.

Originally my thoughts were to have the top powered coated, but the bills are adding up and after having seen We Gone’s work I have decided to paint the top end.

A second reconsideration was that rear end to use. Car -10 had a factory Dana 60. But again for the sake of keeping the budget and challenges under control, I have decided to stay with a Dana 44 rebuilding it to match the gear ratio of the 60.

To put it all back together, the plan is to assemble the drive train and then lift the body over and down.

I still need or simply may want a few parts so if anyone has the following:

Fuel lines
Water pump maybe.
And an ’86-’89 dash panel. The big one door to door.
'89 Bose wiring harnesses.

The plan, after the car is done, is to get it to Chicago, then drive route 66 back to Santa Monica. Let’s see how it goes.

Super cool that you're actually going to drive it

The schedule is to have the car complete and running by September of 2015. Drive Route 66 before Winter sets in. Then go on to put another 100,000 miles on it.

Once the motor is in and running there is body work to widen the rear and the interior trim out so the car is going to take time.

I admit to an understating why the cars are not being resorted. There are a lot of parts to these cars. Many parts a bit hard to find. And the parts are worth much more than the whole. If you are used to the older Corvettes where you could just take a good look at it and understand how it works, that does not happen on a C4, let alone an LT-5. But that is not the point, is it.

Thanks to all of you for the encouragement, George

Owners always want these cars to go up in value. This will not happen until we see more restorations like this and less part-outs.

Soap & Water

Afternoon spent washing the motor. First thought was that since I have no practical way to get the finish of the raw aluminum anywhere close to what it once was, that I would just leave the painted surfaces of the motor as they are with scratches and statins and all. But on the other hand, no one can see the transmission when the hood is open, so I think it will be taking a spray can to the heads and intake.

Do I paint the bolts first and then the surfaces, or the surfaces and then the bolts? I think the bolts.

Anyone with a water pump for sale?

I started to cover the bolt heads with tape but found is easier to use small sticky's I got from an office supply store. Here is my post on it. Went back and touched them up after I was done.

Steve. I had read your post. It was only after reading it that I had said to myself, "I can do that!". Your motor came out fantastic. George

FX3 shock actuators: Cleaning up some actuators for the car. Some of them have numbers scratched in the tops. Now these are all rears from two different cars. Anyone with ideas? Not that it is a big deal.

Anyone with a pair of fronts in good shape?

Fascinating project!:happy1:

Oh, and as it happens, Ami and I just got back home, after running Route 66 (sort of: I-40, 44, & 55 follows 66) all the way home from AZ. It will be a fascinating trip - some very beautiful places along the way, especially through AZ!

Keep me in mind when you get to Oklahoma. We live just about 3 miles south of Rt 66, near Arcadia, OK, where the round barn is. Would be fun to meet up with you.
