I have seen where Autocrossers seem to change pads before doing runs, is this common & any downsides besides doing it????? Thanks.

Track pads don't work on the street (not enough temp) and street pads don't last on the track (too much temp). Autocross truth lies in the middle.

I am a somewhat serious autocrosser and use specific pads - they work cold (with just a little heat) and I use them on the street but that's only transport as it's really an event-only car. These pads are noisy and dusty - would be obnoxious on the street.

The track-vs-street brake change should really include rotors since the pads need to "bed" onto the rotors and the two compounds don't mix. Search up brake pad bedding for more info but basically you deposit some pad compound on the rotor and that's your friction surface. On the street this happens by itself over some miles.

In summary, for casual/fun autocross don't worry about it.
For competitive autocross use specific pads, may or may not be an issue for street.
For track you definitely want dedicated brake pads and rotors and spend the hour swapping.
