View Full Version : General Website Gripes

Hi guys--
I don't like to complain but I have two general website gripes that have been bugging me for a long time and came to a head recently.
One is that there is a very quick timeout on this website. If I take a few minutes to compose a posting or a reply to a private message, the website will timeout when I try to post it and say I have to sign in. And most irritating is that the text disappears. Then I have to sign on again and re-write the post. It happened again this morning trying to reply to a PM. Twice it kicked me out when I tried to post--fortunately the second time I had copied the text before hitting the post button, so I signed on a third time and was finally able to post. And you can't tell you'll be kicked out because your log in shows that you are still logged in. This never happens on any of the other Corvette and other forums that I frequent, including ones by V-Bulletin. Only here. Can we not correct this with our web hosting firm? It is extremely annoying.
The second is that the website is often very slow. I have to wait and wait when I post a reply or go back and forth between postings. Have we switched servers in the past year or so? None of the other websites are as slow as this one in switching pages and it is often so slow that I simply give up and go to other forums. Is there not a solution to this also? Sorry--just a little annoyed this morning. --Bob

If other websites weren't so much better in these areas I would not have noted the situation. I am using Windows Internet Explorer 10. Seems to work fine with all other websites. I have never been timed out on any other sites, and they certainly all seem faster. But the fact that you don't have problems may mean it has something to do with my system. But a bit of a puzzle since I just don't have the same issues with other venues. --Bob

Bob I have seen the same speed issues.. I am always signed in do that is not a issue for me. There are days this site is very slow and other when it is fine. I too have asked and the response was it was five for them.. Must be me..
I have seen the issues on 3 different computers, 2 different androids and 5 different Internet provider connections

I'd like it if we could post pics directly or at least attach larger files.

I've never been timed out. Matter of fact, when I open the window, I'm logged in. I would be in trouble if I had to log in, wouldn't know how to do it.
And I'm always quick between pages, never wait long, five seconds would be slow for me.????

OP - Is you PC a Win 7 or Win 8 machine? If yes try running IE with no add-ons and see if that might help. START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > INTERNET EXPLORER (NO ADD ONS).
If it's a Win7 or Win8 machine maybe try IE11. I believe even in Vista there might be the 'no add-ons' option for IE10.

How about that super annoying 6 picture limit per post? I'd LOVE to see that disappear...

What HE said ^^^^^^^ =D>
I have never been "timed out". Never have to sign out and back in either - just have it set on "remember me". Not sure what that is about....???
And YES I have noticed the site is slow a lot of times. Especially when posting - it sometimes takes a while to go through. Also when switching between threads. This is the same either on my phone, laptop, or tablet. I still run Vista on my old laptop, with Chrome browser. And I don't have "slowness" issues on any other forum site....

Bob,
I had the timeout issue you are. One of the Mods made a change to my account and since then it has not been a problem. Also I to have experienced the page loading problem as well. For me it comes and goes. Seems that maybe this may be related to the web site traffic (peek times vs. non peak) or not.

I notice sometimes pages load slower too.
I do Linux + FF browser, but still attribute most delay to end user's ISP + hardware.
But I have seen some strange behavior which can ONLY be attributed to Z servers not sync'ed with each other.
Friday, Z-Factor's windshield thread came up in GP, but tonywy's post, which resurrected it from 2011, didn't appear on the last page, on the server I was logged onto. I clicked Back button, and you could see that tonywy HAD posted.
Click Forward, and the same display came up withOUT the post. :12 - :15 later, the post came up. Same server sync'ed, or different server, I don't know.
Some web forums' pages tell which of the site's servers that you're logged onto - forums dot techguy dot org is one of them.
Savy users can help admin ID server sync problems with that.....

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions, guys. Lee, I normally always copy it also and usually need that copy. Just doesn't seem like I should have to do that. Doesn't happen on other websites. --Bob
Later edit: PS, when I posted this reply it took about 10 seconds for the screen to come back.

I use Windows 7 and W Explorer 10. Version 11 seems to have some bugs in it and also does not work with some of my wife's business programs. I'll try the no add-ons. Thanks--Bob
Subsequent check: I am already running Windows Explorer 10 without add-ons.

Hi Jeff--I always sign out and frequently clear cookies and temp files. And I guess you are right--there are days when it works fine, but mostly slower. To my original question--did we switch servers some time ago? I now get all my email notices from Jim Voter's computer/email address for some reason. Is there some relation there? --Bob

No changes have been made to the server to my knowledge for many years. All invoices I have for the forum hosting are to the same company. They could have possibly made internal changes of which we are not aware.
Jim is co-administrator of the forum and probably changed that information in 2011. Email contact should probably be forum@zr1netregisry.com

Thanks for all the responses on this -- it is frustrating not to be able to pin down a cause for the slowness and the timeout problem. Seems that some people have experienced these issues while others have not. A dilemma, like an intermittent electrical problem. Hopefully someone will have a light bulb moment and figure something to do. --Bob

When you are posting or PMing......just copy work every minute or so. Then if timed out (or in my case I hit the wrong key)...just reload and paste.

Or, just lengthen the amount of time before timing out. I'm assuming the purpose for the time out to begin with is to limit the amount of idle traffic that is soaking up bandwidth. What if we doubled the time out limit for Members and left the current time out limit for guests? That would go a long way with those of us with time out issues and it wouldn't affect the guests.
BTW...this post just took 33 secs to post. And that's with very limited traffic.

I don't have issues that appear regularly and for those that do I'd think I'd look into my router configuration. Restarting it might actually fix your issues and restarting the modem also. I've had dial-up, satellite, DSL and cable service with generally a very good experience with all of them but it certainly doesn't hurt to restart the hardware occasionally.
I understand all of you mention it's only with "this forum" but it doesn't seem as wide spread as to indicate an issue with the "forum" server/s.
The other thing that could be a nuisance locally could be DNS. Just Google "Clear DNS Cache" and read a couple of the results. When the Registry Web-site was redone the DNS had problems for a few days sporadically and the fix at that time was to "clear the DNS cache" and let it build itself over. I'd restart modem and then router just for grins. Takes very little effort/time.

I was typing the argument that if it was my router it would be slow all other sites as well when I realized the same thing can be said of the site. If it was the site EVERYONE would be slow. And clearly not everyone is having this issue.
I took your advise, followed your instructions and cleared my cache. Let's see it that helps...

Bob, Sorry I do not know what change was made. However the comment I received was that it something to do with a time out setting. At the time when I was logged on for more than a minute while typing a message I would be booted out of the system and lose what I had typed. I still to this day will copy my entered message before I submit it, just call me paranoid. :)

Just curious.

No problems here, except for the short timeout, on a MAC OSX 10.6.8, Using Safari.
Lucky for me, when it times out, I can re-log in and the post I'm writing is still there.
I've lost posts like that elsewhere, very frustrating.

When I re-log in after such a timeout, I get a blank page. It says www.zr1.net (http://www.zr1.net) in the heading but it is blank. Have to close it and log in normally. And my previous post is lost. --Bob

Hi Jim--
Perhaps it is my system but as I have said before, it only seems to happen on this website. I am on several other corvette (and other) forums regularly and I have never experienced the slowness or the timeout issue with those. But thanks for testing!!--Bob
