View Full Version : Clutch Disengaging issues

Since I put the 90 back together, the clutch has been less than perfect...sometimes not disengaging....I redid the clutch once with some improvement and no significant issues.

Well two weeks ago the clutch went back to not disengaging and not allowing me to shift when the car was cold and parked on an incline or decline. (while running)

For shifts and grins I went out last night and pulled the collapsing rubber seal out of the master. The issue is not completely gone.

Will see if it lasts:cheers:

Fork got a curve in it?

Not sure whats going on....going to change the master and slave again to see if it helps. I had someone else do the clutch as I had my lift occupied by the Callaway.

Lee,

Are you referring to the rubber seal in the reservoir cover, or something else?

LGAFF

yes, initially it worked, but apparently a coincidence that the issue went away

Lee,
Must be something in the air here in CL. Last Sat. I wanted to take the Z out and couldn't shift into reverse. Reservoir was bone dry and black crud at bottom. I did not put the black cup back in, not sure what it's purpose is. Is it OK to leave it out? With it in there is now way to fill fluid up to the fill mark.

John you have a bad master or slave....give me a call

LGAFF

Changed slave....not sure it helped....

*push in clutch....single mass rattle stops
*On jack stands the wheels will spin when in gear with clutch in
**Will continue spinning even in neutral
*Hit brakes in gear with clutch pushed in....wheels stop even after brake releases

Been through 3/4 slave/master sets no changes.....

All new sycros last year

Could be fork, or pivot I guess

Lee,

Have you checked to see that the clutch pedal is not bent? This was the problem on my 84. Clutch pedal was straighter than it should have been and would not disengage clutch or did so reluctantly.

I checked it before and again last night....looks to be fine

Looking back, I know you might wish you'd done something else - been thar done dat too! I'm looking for the first excuse to put a dual RAM in mine, and I'm sure if you had it to do over, you might be or had done something like that before now, no?.

must be a trend... I had the same symptoms with mine. Still not sure what caused it. Rebuilt slave & master, no change. Took it all apart, and there is no obvious damage to the clutch or PP. Guess I need to take a closer look at the fork & pedal.

Not sure what to do next. I am going to put the RAM dual disc in it when I put it back together. More engine work to do first :-D

Todd,

If any ZR should have the dual clutch it's yours.

At a minimum I wish I had added a hydraulic throwout

Um yeah... 'cept the stock Valeo is a pull type pressure plate, and the RAM (far as I know) is a push type hydraulic throwout type; but I hear ya.

Time to move on boys & girls .
Stock Valeo pull type pressure plate and slave cylinder setup is nothing but a valley of tears experience.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but based on the posts, thought it might be of interest to the participants. If anyone thinks it's not appropriate, just say so & I will delete it.

FWIW, if you are considering a RAM Dual Disc Clutch, we have just marked them down.

Forgive me, but are you sure it's bled properly? Let me
recommend Ranger's method of doing the hydraulic fluid.

dom the Ranger thing was great.....now the entire system failed. Can you be here tomorrow around 3:30PM to help me push it into the garage?

Just yanking yer chain....I think its the master. switched the fluid 5-6 times...a few small black chunks and lost the pedal almost completely

It was the master. I filled the reservoir and the next day it was empty. I replaced it with one of those cheap Chinese ones. I will send the old one to Jim Jandik to rebuild. I love driving the Z and didn't want to waist any nice days. Just passed 10k, it had 7.8k when I bought it last August.

Thanks for all of your advice.

So yesterday shift no issue from a cold start....today will not engage a gear at all....found a large metal shaving in the Master cylinder in a screw shape....thinking maybe all of the material when they tapped the cast was just left inside...wonder if the line if clogging?

XfireZ51
09-14-2014, 03:26 PM
Have u thought of replacing hydraulic line?

LGAFF
09-14-2014, 09:41 PM
The line is only a few years old....unless you are saying its clogged??

XfireZ51
09-14-2014, 09:56 PM
Something is breaking down if the fluid is getting black after only a few hundred miles. Sounds like the line is the oldest thing in the circuit.
Is it a SS braided line?

LGAFF
09-14-2014, 10:02 PM
Yes its stainless ......from Classic Tube..

Well the clutch engagement issues went away this year, but it appears that after only about 8K miles the disc is shot; making me wonder what is causing all the problems? Too many projects right now and work, looks like no Corvette Shootout this year

LGAFF
08-22-2016, 07:43 AM
problem might be solved clutch fork and pivot were worn, the disc was completely toast in under 10K miles

Wow Lee, the fork and pivot must have been worn badly to cause a disk to wear out that quickly. You must be hard on your equipment...:icon_thum
