Where exactly is the darn turn signal flasher located?

I tried to finish up a project for a Route 66 car show tomorrow,
(today) but I can't find the flasher, I'm tired, and getting nowhere.

I removed the drivers side hush panel and looked underneath
the dash. The FSM says it's to the left of the steering column
under the dash. It is round and secured by a clip attached to
a block holding 3 other relays. Nice schematic-no help.

Electrical is not my favorite and I hate being upside down under the dash.
There is a sea of wires, connectors, inline fuses, and harnesses under there.

Is it forward towards the firewall? Up high by the top of the dash
or just above the hush panel?

I can't believe I can't find it! Any suggestions?
TIA (NOT a Transient Ischemic Attack!)

Hey Ted,

If it's not been moved and left hanging try reaching up at the clutch pedal pivot area. It should be up and left of pedal pivot point. I believe it's "outboard" of the relays towards kick-panel if it's not been moved! It's not a part of the relay bracket and it's likely "loose" and just been stuffed up there. What leads you to believe you need flasher? A bad flasher will generally click once with each move of the TS lever. Try using the turn lever a couple times and listen for it. Maybe!

When my flasher went bad, the turn signals would just not flash (they'd just be on permanently, no blinking). Here is where mine was (this was on my 1991, not sure if other years are different, though I'd expect not...)

Nice clean photo of drivers side wiring...thanks
Note the hush panel light wiring dangling down to the left and Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) Connector dangling down to the right (the two items connected to the Drivers Side hush panel).

Wow, does that look CLEAN compared to my mass of wires! Either some-
one meticulous bundled your wires, or a bomb went off under my dash.

Thanks for the photo! Tonight when its cooler, I'll look for it again.
102 deg today and HUMID. Yuck! But Route 66 was fun, even if
instead of the Z I took my Expedition....

Yup, and I moved the tail lights out
so they are flush and installed sequential
turn signal electronics. I'll see if I like the look.
I hope so after all this work!

WHY CAN'T WE JUST BE SATISFIED?

How and what parts did you use to move the lenses out? I would like to do the same if its not more trouble than its worth. Thanks.

I didn't just move the lenses out, I moved the entire light enclosure outwards and I custom cut some rubber perimeter gaskets. I saw an old post where someone just used either a thicker gasket or layered gaskets: Not what I wanted to do, plus the enclosure is a wider diameter when flush, so what about the space?

Got any photos of the finished product,Ted? Sounds like a cool mod.

Well, finally Got 'er Dunn! And I also found out why this simple task
was made so difficult. This ZR1 Net Brotherhood is GREAT!-
I couldn't (& wouldn't) do it without you!

Special thanks to c4koh (Steve) & Jeff. Your pictures told me exactly
where the flasher was: by the hood release lever.
So last night I again crawled under the dash knowing EXACTLY where to
look. I STILL CAN'T GET BEYOND THE SEA OF WIRES!

Thanks to JEFF FLINT'S suggestion (& Steve's front facing picture)
I removed the metal impact brace and voila, whoop there it is!

Quick and easy to swap out the flasher. I realized that when I bought
the car (1999) the previous owner had installed a Viper alarm system.
Everything was packed right behind the flasher. I use the alarm and
(knock on wood) it has never caused me any problems so I never removed
it. Quite a difference between Steve's neat under dash and my mess.

Here is a prelim picture of the new light housing position:

We will see.....

Happy to help, and pleasure to give back advice rather than taking it, which I have done in most every post :)

It lokos very nice, may think about the same for mine. Interesting you mention the VIPER alarm system. The photo I posted was from my original 1991 ZR1 (which I had in England) but my new ZR1 (which I've got now in the US) does have the VIPER alarm system, so I wonder what the wires look like with you saying that he alarm system was packed down there...

Best

Steve

Sequencer works.
I like it.
