Ok fellas..The car is officially up for sale now..I thought I had it worked out and the car started burning oil again and smoking at idle..For those of you that had followed my thread in the Tech forum know the problems I was having..As of recent,,car came back with very strong compression #s and was just checked out by a local performance shop..It is in their opinion the car is in need of either IH gaskets or Valve seals..I dont have the money or time to fix it,and quite frankly I hate the car at this point..It still drives and pulls hard in every gear without hiccup..However I cant take the smoke as it stinks and is very embarrasing..Im done with it..I will give a basic rundown of what I know has been done.. However I cant include every little specific as I threw everything at the car trying to correct the probem..This would include every electrical sensor,IAC motor,02 sensors,PCV valves, ect all within the last year..Again car runs and drives but smokes (Blue)at idle..The first person to show me 10K will take the car..I will NOT part it out..I will NOT take anything under 10K..The car is extremely well documented and I have every single receipt that consists of over 250 documents..Anyone interested can feel free to call me with any additional info they may need..Car resides in Central NJ and I will work with anyone that needs to set up transport..Below is a brief description about the car..I will have pics available in this thread tonight as I will go outside and take fresh pics so you will see it as it sits..AS FOLLOWS

91 ZR1 Black/Black,6spd,79K on odometer,,15K on mods.Exterior is good with no dents or rust..The car is a great 10 footer but would lok much better with someone who knows how to cut and polish out small scratches,oxidation,ect..The car has resided outside the last 3yrs..Interior is in good shape with no rips/tears,ect.

I bought the car. I figured it would be a perfect candidate for a Big Block Chevy Swap that I have always thought about. It had a big rad, big brakes, coilovers, HD Trans & 11" wheels. I have a complete 496 BBC engine sitting in my garage already. I thought I might try tinkering getting the LT5 running right. I asked about the ZR-1 wheels, he said they were sold previously.

I did not beat the guy up on price, as I thought he took it in the shorts on this project already.

I am only posting this because I think we should not bother him, as I think he would like nothing better than to totally forget his LT5 foray.

Thanks, Tim

What ECM and FI will u be using?

What ECM and FI will u be using?

Dom, This is something I totally don't understand. Most of the conversions that I have read about have been mid-80's. probably due to the cheaper price of the earlier cars, they are very unloved. I know Lingenfelter did 3, I think they were 90's vintage cars.

I was going to put my 496 in a 70 LS5 car & was looking at using the "FAST" system, which is a stand alone, self tuning system.

If I can get this thing running correctly relatively easy, I probably won't even consider doing the BBC swap.

This was one of those things that I was going to do when my time was not so important, probably 3 years out. It just seemed like the perfect candidate at the right price.....an opportunity.

Any offhand suggestions?????? Thanks, Tim

ECM and FI? 1250 Dominator.

Tim, I like this idea. I have the perfect candidate and a 572 that is two hundred or so pounds lighter than the LT5.

ZR-2 BBC I like the idea.

Robert.....The Tall Blocks just aggravate the fit. Although, you can get that in a standard height block, it just max's everything out.

If you're interested, let me know, I studied pretty good on it & have a bunch of links if you want.

They say a aluminum headed, intake & water pump BBC is only 80 heavier than a standard SBC.

I think after a certain horsepower, a BBC is downright cheap compared to a LT5

If it was me, I would use an 84-85 C4 as my base. They don't have CCMs to deal w. My 84 Z51 weighed 3250 w fluids. So imagine throwing in a lightweight LSx motor. Then the EFI and the PCM selection would be pretty straightforward using something like the 411. No hood clearance issues. Just thinking out loud. This was something I considered before buying my ZR. At the time, it was a more difficult swap. But today, they have kits for this. I think ZF-Doc even has a way of bolting ZF to LSx motor. Maybe an LS7.
Then throw on a set of CROSSFIRE INJECTION belt line moldings. ;);)

Alnukem,
Thank you

No problem, my VD 368 has been out of the car for 3 years, I'm a slow
Mover as well.

It's funny that you want to put your BB into a zr1 and I want to
Put an LT5 into a BMW 850, we'll have to exchange some pics
If these projects come to fruition!

Take care

Just a note for people that might use this thread in troubleshooting their car, I did buy Mitsumark's car last year. At the end of the day, it was collapsed oil rings & damaged sleeves. To be fair, I believe this car was tracked pretty hard. We have decided to replace the sleeves, rings & bearings. A little additional porting work will be done & Pete's Stage 1 Exhaust cams will be added to the already there, Split Duration 228/238 Intake Cams. I Hope none of you end up at the same place, but it could have been worse!

Thanks......You're a swell guy! lol.

I too still think it's a good deal. I'll have a rebuilt Ported 368 with cams & a free car with coil-overs & heim jointed suspension.....& how about this, the radio works!

The stigma of the previous builder & cams condition will be behind it.

It's kinda nice to know what is really in a engine, a lot of time the original owner looses specs, or the next guy. That info is going in a log that goes with the car.

So why didn't the collapsed ring show up on the compression test, was it an oil control ring?

Yes.

Were you able to diagnose the issue with the engine in the car? or was it found during dis-assembly. I assume the oil consumption and smoking reappeared and then you decided to open it an see. If you can diagnose a bad oil ring the car I would like to know how you did it, for a future reference that I never hope to need

I bought it knowing it had issues. I tried a few things unsuccessfully, gassed it up & drove it to Chicago to give it to someone who knows something. The Mechanic tried a few things & the decision was made to remove the engine. If you think you have this problem, one of the imports are known for it & it's pretty common to run Risolene or I think, GM Top End Cleaner. Please do your research first.

Knock wood no problems on the Z. I was asking about a previous build that used a good deal of oil but has really good compression.

alnukem
08-19-2015, 10:29 AM
With good compression, I believe typical suspects are valve guides/seals, oil rings, plenum leaks & gasket leaks.

Just a update, it's up & running after sleeve/ring replacements. While we were there, the stock exhaust cams were replaced with Stage 1 ones, the upper was ported more aggressively & a x-pipe added. Waiting for spring for Tuning.

Al,

I think you'll be pleased with Pete's exhaust cams, especially w the right tune.
Should be interesting to see how they work w the Split duration intakes.
W Xpipe, you want to look into using Z06 exhaust control valves.
