8 ZR-1’s at Mecum auction today in Indianapolis. Overall impression, mint condition cars sold at give away prices.
1. Lot S61, 90ZR-1, 112 miles, Metallic Red and Saddle. Mint condition, no flaws.$31,000 high bid, no sale wanted around $40,000.
2. Lot S106, 95 ZR-1 s/n 447, last 95 sold to public, yellow with black interior. 400 milles pretty bad delam around windshield, and paint bubbling on throttle plate pretty bad. Other than those 2 things mint condition. High bid $85,000 no sale wanted close to $100,000.
3. Lot S121, 90 ZR-1 Red on Red, 396 miles, mint condition. $33,000.00 sold.
4. Lot S122 91 ZR-1 765 miles excellent condition, $29,000.00 sold.
5. Lot S123 92 ZR-1 254 miles Red on Red, some windshield delam, otherwise excellent.$29,000.00 sold.
6. Lot S124, 93 Ruby ZR-1,1425 miles excellent condition, 45,000.00 sold.
7. Lot s125, 94 ZR-1, Red on Red, don’t know mileage, mint condition $35,000.00 sold.
8. Lot S126, 95 ZR-1, 60 miles, Red on Red, Mint condition,$60,000.00, sold.
After what I saw today, If you have a ZR-1 that you love, drive and enjoy it all the time, because it’s never going to be worth a fortune to anyone else.

So You paid approx $70,000 for a car back in the 90's You have never really driven the car or enjoyed it's potential, and now you sell it for less than half of the original value( not considering inflation) Pretty Good investment for the NEXT OWNER.

I am driving the living $hit outta my ZR-1.....

This may sound like heresy, but I think those prices are pretty good.
I don't sympathize with the weenies who buy a car, don't drive it, and then foolishly expect a "return on their investment". Gentlemen, that's not what cars are for.
The ZR-1 is a great car, the fastest American production car of the twentieth century. But it is not a rare car, and that's what drives auction prices. If GM had made 700 of them, instead of 7,000, the prices would be up there where you want them. And if they had made 70 of them, the prices would be stratospheric, available only to the wealthy one percenters. Is that what you would prefer?

I prefer a situation, like today, when the average enthusiast can easily buy a fine, clean, well maintained, example of this great machine for less than $20K. And, if you're short of $$$'s, you can get a solid one that needs some sweat equity to make it right for half that.

I bought mine in '94 for 1/2 the sticker price, and have been enjoying it ever since. What's not to like?

'Invested', has to be the most mis-used word when it comes to cars' sales and purchases...

I don't think someone 'invested' $77k for the new car, expecting $93k, 8 - 11 years later, even if it was left 'NIB' - new in box.

Probably "spent on this collector piece", is more appropriate, when it comes to vehicles' description for sale.

Apparently I have Opposite Syndrome. I own a first-year ZR-1 and it's the last year that's worth the most. And I own a last-year 308, and the first year models are skyrocketing. Just means I'm going to drive them a lot more!

Patience guys. Everyone buys these cars for different reasons. Some to drive, some to mod, some to keep stock. There is no wrong answer. The market will wake up sooner or later, just too special of a car. I'm buying all I can afford. Market, I believe, is at bottom. I might be wrong, but I might not be. No one really knows.
