Hi all,
Just got my new Red 1991 #1139 shipped from Ohio to Minnesota and can't wait to drive it. I'm sure I will be looking for advice from the members here to help me on my journey. I have had several Corvettes in the past but never a ZR-1 and it has been about 18 years since the last one but who is counting.
I see for the poll that there are 9 other members in Minnesota. I was wondering which part of the state or metro area the they reside in?
As far as the car goes it has a few minor issues that I can see on the surface.
Good
Bright Red with Black interior
43,000 miles
95 style polished wheels
Both tops
Original windshield with minor delamination
Runs strong and clutch is good
Bad
Radio comes on and tuner works but no sound
Belt moldings and rear hatch gasket (not bad but will replace)
Need to paint the hood and front bumper (chips and scratches)
Couple of oil drips from about drivers middle overnight
Some wear in carpet under the clutch pedal
I have no previous owner info on the car as I bought it as a repo from a major lending institution. If anyone has some info on the car it would sure help.
Sorry about the long post but thank you in advance for everything.
Jon

From what I have found is that a dealer in Cuyahoga Falls, OH tried to sell it at one of our auctions last June with 38,000 miles and then it was repo'ed in the Pittsburgh area in January by Wells Fargo and brought to our auction in Columbus to be sold. I purchased it 2 weeks ago and just got it in yesterday.

I will post up some pictures as soon as the paint work is done. I have a large body shop onsite and was able to get it disassembled and primed yesterday and ready for paint today. BASF has 2 reps here installing a new Onyx paint line so I had them do some spray outs for the color match. There are 7 alternates and it took them 4 tries to get it right.

What color combo do you have? I have seen a Yellow and a Polo Green around my side of town but only rarely.
Is there a somewhere you go for any mechanical work or do you do most of it yourself?

I have lived here for 16 years and didn't know that Rippie was here. I googled them and found out that Rippie Motorsports is now in Waverly, MN which is about 1 hour west of the Twin Cities.
I don't think I will need to do anything major but it is good to know that one of the best Corvette tuners is that close.
My guys were to busy today so paint will happen tomorrow.
Thanks for the info.

If you want an exact match on the blacked out sections of the bumper SEM TRIM GLOSS black is what you want. This is a single stage paint with and without catalyst but it is a dead on match.

I have a black zr1 with black interior. I use Doug Rippie. He's on your side of town and does great work at a reasonable price. Doug has forgotten more about zr1 than most people ever knew.

That is good to know for future reference. Is he still in Plymouth or is it in Waverly now?

Thanks for the info. I was going to blackout and clear over the openings when the Red base coat was done but the fine line tape was pulling the black off. So i will do it after it is cleared.

It's a 80' tunnel that fits 4 cars at a time. We have 2 set side by side with a mix room between. We paint on average about 35-40 cars per day.

Driver's side middle drippage may be the infamous header stud leak.
The booth is off the hook...

Exactly to what do we refer here? The main 'hanging' stud; center of block perhaps?
Mine came out once, with the nut on the tip.
I got it set, when I got the D side headers locked in, but do I need to check for some sealing???

Once everything is back together I will put it up on a lift and try to figure out the oil leak.

I work for a wholesale auto auction company which has 65 US locations. We have a full line reconditioning shop with a 10 bay mechanic shop, a detail shop that does about 175 cars a day and the body shop which with more staffing can do up to 75-80 cars a day. Most repairs are 2-3 panels per unit.

Your car was done with the production product you use in day to day OR? I would assume your day to day production is all water-borne if so whose?

We have used BASF waterborne in the shop since 2008. At the time our location was the first to go with BASF from DuPont products. Now our company uses them exclusive in the 45 sites that have a body shop. Out location is used by BASF as a Beta site to test new products all the time along with 3M which also uses us to test different tapes and adhesives and checking our Ford and Chrysler factory inventory for how well their emblems hold up.

Haven't seen that one before. I would be weary of taking it off.
We usually test things like different tapes, sandpaper, foam for the door jams and a cling wrap for inside paint booths to keep the walls clean. They like that they can have as many as 100 bake cycles a week in a production setting. We have also done large repaint projects for Chysler in the past 5 years when they have had paint issues at different factories. The last one involved complete repainting of 2000 Jeep's that had a clear coat issue.

The oil drip is coming from the drain plug. I cleaned it off with brake cleaner and tightened up but it started to seep so I ordered a new plug and will change it when I do the oil change.

Was on my way home last night and seen a 91 or 92 ZR-1 about 5 miles from my house. It was parked at a metal fabrication business and it was late so I didn't stop. Maybe on Friday I will stop in and inquire about who owns it.

The drain plug has a washer type seal, thats might be whats causing the leak.

It seems to be the washer that you are talking about is the leak. The new plug and washer arrived today and will get installed tomorrow when the oil is changed.
Everything has been put back together and polished up and I plan on driving her home for the weekend tomorrow. I will mess with the radio next week to try and figure out why it's not working. Besides who needs a radio when you have that sweet exhaust note coming from the back!
I will post some pictures up tomorrow.

Put about 300 miles on my first weekend with the new car. Don't seem to have any issues other than trying to find a wiper blade that doesn't hit the hood.
In 2 days I have met Vern who has a 91 ZR-1 with 66K on it and he has a shop about 5 miles from my house and at a stoplight on Saturday I had a 91 Turquoise ZR-1 pull up to me. He didn't think mine was a ZR-1 because I have the polished A-Mod wheels and they don't have the offset at the lugs like the saw-blades do. He lives in Buffalo, MN which is about 25 miles west of me. It is such a small world out there and I am sure I will come across more the longer I drive it.
