View Full Version : ZF6 Drain/Fill plug torque
What is the proper torque for the drain/fill plugs on the ZF6?
Is there a difference warm vs. cold?
Any sealant on the threads?
My 90 FSM says 26 ft-lb in one place, and 34 ft-lb in another!
My 93 FSM says 26 ft-lb in one plane, and 36 ft-lb in another!
Thanks

tite enuf to not come loose!
it isn't load bearing, just a plug. You probably can't get a torque wrench in there anyhow unless you buy the German Hazet socket for that.

I use a 17mm Allen wrench
Thanks guys.
For the fill plug I used a 17mm allen socket with a wrench on the hex (exhaust in the way of using a ratchet). I suppose a crow's foot could be used with a torque wrench this way if you really wanted an exact torque, but like y'all said it's just a fill plug...

There are several opinions on this but I use a very light coat of Permatex 300 Form A Gasket on both surfaces of mating parts of all assemblies in contact with oil or water (water pump, oil pan and oil filter housing assemblies). I always use a thin coat of Permatex on the oil pan drain plug, transmission plugs, and differential drain plug also. This not only helps seal the plugs but also acts as a thread locker (A little less bolt torque with a good sealant). Tighten just tight enough to NOT LEAK.

Lots of ways to skin a cat, I recon...
I use Teflon (plumber's) tape on the threads of all (oil drain) plugs - acts as a sealant AND as an anti-seize agent.
Torque...IDK the ft#, but tighten (by fingers), and then as Dom says, a little tug on the socket wrench.
Never had a leak, never had a plug become seized (so far!).
Oh, and thanks, George, for that LINK! (I'm a sucker for having just the right tool for any job:cheers:.)
