Mine is scratched up. I ordered a repro piece but it's a piece of junk. I need to refinish the original. I know you can buy something like the coating in a spray can, but wondering if it comes out satisfactory - I guess I could practice on something else, not real confident in being able to do a good job myself, I guess.

Although "PLasti-coat (I think)" sold at Homedepot is similar rubbery coating, I strongly recommend that you not use it. When sprayed on it ends up being blotchy finish - nothing like original.
If anything, Testors Flat Black is the closest I have been able to find.
Even Testor's, if sprayed on too thick, rubbery factory finish will start to loosen and bubble up. I suggest multiple light sprays and wet sanding after 3-4 coats, followed by final coat.
