Yesterday morning I flew to Denver and picked up my new car. Drove almost 1000 miles back to Dallas and got back today. It was quite the adventure! I got a great deal on the car (13K), because it has a few issues such as a bad misfire.
I took 16 new FIC injectors with me and installed them before hitting the road home. the injectors made a big improvement but it still has a misfire to figure out. I also have to figure out what color it is! The car has had a color change but was done extremely well. The car is in overall good shape but there is plenty to keep me busy for a while as I try to perfect it. When I picked it up it had 41,808 miles. I bought the car from the second owner who only put a couple of hundred miles on it before storing it in a barn. The car is originally from Washington State.
The good:
Excellent paint but not original color. I love this gray though
Trans shifts great
clutch
Near new tires
Wheels
Brakes
B&B 3" exhaust
cool later model side vents
all glass is absolutely perfect
most all electronics work accept what is listed below
The bad/to be fixed:
wrong badges on nose and tail
missing the radio
electric seats move with some help
a/c doesn't get cold
drivers side of center console separating from the top plastic trim
misfire when under load
secondary's don't open, vacuum pump runs continuously
plenum was painted yellow then black... a lot of stripping to do.
some of the rubber seals need attention
cruise control doesn't work
intermitant wipers don't work but wipers work otherwise
arm rest latch broken.
missing piece of trim on the targa top where it unbolts on drivers side
Feel free to offer any advice on the issues. Thank you!

Fix the vacuum leak. You may fix the misfire along w it.

I am planning on that as a first priority, but am also thinking of getting rid of the secondary's. I am still learning these engines, but I thought running the car in the "normal" position kept them from opening? and wouldn't cause the misfire???

A vacuum leak is a vacuum leak. Keeping the secondaries "closed" doesn't seal it.

Thanks, thought maybe it was on its own sealed system. I did inspect the vacuum lines when I had the plenum off and everything looked good. There was a two wire connector near the center under the plenum that wasn't connected to anything and there was nothing for it to connect to. Any idea what this is?

Yeah I LOVE the color! Don't change it!
If someone put a "chip" in the car, (like a Haibeck chip) the power key defaults to the "full power" position. That said - you have a leak if the pump runs full time.
The seats are very easy to remove - there is a u shaped wire on the bottom front of the seat cushion that you push to get it out of the slot that holds it - and bottom cushion comes right out. Four bolts and a couple connectors and they are out. Make sure to lubricate all movement points.
I had the A/C on mine changed over to R-134. See if yours already has been switched. Doing this fixed mine (which didn't work before I had it changed)
Sounds like you have quite the project! Good Luck!

That color is great. It should have been a factory offering. When I was looking, I wanted either Charcoal or Steel Blue, with Steel Blue as my 1st choice. I finally found what i wanted, but, that gray of yours is talking to me. Looking forward to seeing more as you resolve the issues and make it your own. Good Luck

Wasn't there a solenoid just in front of the coil packs that had hoses connected to it? Maybe post a pic of the connector.

Yes sold it last June to finance a vintage race car restoration that raced such off road desert races such as the Baja 1000, Baja 500 Mint 400 etc, back in the mid '70's. We are racing it in the NORRA Mexican 1000 Vintage off road race next month.

Correction, the vacuum pump does not run full time. It is cycling about every 10 seconds. Is this acceptable or still a leak? The electrical connector that was not connected to anything was under the plenum just rear of the two very large rubber hoses in the center. It is a two wire connector which is water proof like all the others. It is coming out of a harness. I found nothing for it to connect to. I think I remember one the wires to be black/pink.

What you describe might have been for the gas tank purge solenoid. The secondary solenoid is to the front of the crankcase vent tubes. The hard line for the purge runs to the back passenger corner of the plenum and connects to a 5/16 or 3/8 rubber hose that goes to the tank along the frame.
I don't know why somebody would get rid of that-it vents the pressure out of the tank every time you start it rather than having raw hydrocarbons vent to the air when you unscrew the cap.

I don't know about the electric deal - but I found this in the "solutions" section:
Marc suggests
Evaluating the tightness of the secondary vacuum connections. I like to use the electric pump’s cycle time as an indicator. The pump is calibrated to turn off at 12” Hg. vacuum. The actuators require 6” Hg. vacuum to fully retract. Therefore, if the pump cycles off, there is plenty of margin in the seal of vacuum system for reliable secondary throttle operation. One second of off time is enough to assure normal operation of the secondaries. If the pump stays off longer, it indicates that the system has an extra margin of vacuum tightness. A lot of off time, indicates that the system has a good margin of vacuum tightness. An extra tight vacuum system does not make the engine perform any better than one that allows the pump to stay off for one second.

Congrats,
As far as original color see if the RPO sticker is still in the car open the rear storage box should be pasted there. If not post up the last of the production #580XXX may be someone knows the car. You can also get a copy of the original build & window sticker from the NCM.
Just fixed my CC the switch to the clutch pedal needed adjustment. Look on ebay or other sources for a FSM it will be your best friend. Lastly I have never found anything that could not be answered by the fellow members here.

Thank you all for the input. I just pulled all the plugs and they were a nice light medium brown. Since I don't have the equipment to scope the engine, I did it the redneck way, which was to use a timing light and move the timing light conductor from wire to wire. I could actually see the misfire in two cylinders which was cylinder 2 & 3. All others looked fine. I believe 2 and 3 are on the same coil pack?
also with 10 second interval of the vacuum pump it sounds like I don't have a vacuum leak per the post above.
BTW, The original color was turquoise. Not even considering changing it back. The car looks great in gray IMHO and it is probably one of a kink.

I wish mine did that. It is about 5 sec on and 5 off. When I had the car at Haibecks he said it was good though - and I'm not gonna argue with the Master.. lol
At least your pump runs. Mine is DOA which means I don't get that priming it's supposed to provide. That's the next item on the list.

Ok guys, the engine now runs fantastic! I put a new coil pack in that runs cylinders 2 and 3 and WOW this thing is very quick! Now time to get it registered and some plates on it. The parts store had two types of Borg Warner with lifetime guarantees, a black one that looked stock and a gray one with cooling fins that cost a few bucks more. I went with the more expensive one that said Made in Poland vs, made in Taiwan. I am pretty sure the secondary's are opening as it was frying the tires through the gears.

first as this was never a factory color, who is to say you have the wrong color badges? They look fine to me.
you appear to be missing the rear license plate filler
Check the brake light switchs above the brake pedel if they are not centered the cruise will not set. also you cant set the cruise below 25 MPH.

funny story about the license plate filler. The PO left the plates on the car so I wouldn't get pulled over on the 900 miles drive home. I got about 40 miles and got pulled over for 12 over the limit. The cop told me it was illegal to have the plates on made me give him the front and rear plate. After that I just put the plate filler in the car which is painted body color.
I am starting to be OK with the badges but the front and rear Corvette emblems look wrong for a C4 and are coming off. I need a front license plate filler as I don't intend to run a front plate. This will need to be painted. Should I use a "Corvette" filler or the "aftermarket ZR-1" filler?
Thanks for the tip on the cruise control switch. I didn't post a picture of the engine but the engine compartment is getting attention next as someone did a crappy yellow paint job to the intake and the guy I bought it from did a quicky black paint over the yellow. The cam covers are looking tires, so I will pull a bunch of parts and find a good powder coater in the Dallas area.

I wasn't too happy having the plates confiscated only 40 miles into my journey and told the cop, I was going to get pulled over 200 times by the time I got back to Dallas! He said I would get pulled over but since I had the title and bill of sale I was good for ten days. I told him I was worried about spending more time on the side of the road than on it, but he couldn't care less. Believe it not, I was never pulled over the rest of the trip. I did get comments when I stopped for gas. "Nice car, did your plates get stolen?"

The silver ZR-1 emblems are not bad and look pretty good against the gray, like the silver wheels against the gray. But I believe the nose and fuel door emblems are C5, Look like C6 but have an oval circle and look way out of place on the car. Just ordered correct GM new ones.
The car is cleaning up better than expected and I may take it to a show this Saturday with some friends. I am using Blue Coral lens restore on the tired old looking plastic exterior lights and they are looking like brand new NOS. The engine is the ugliest thing now to deal with. Thank you! I just got back from DMV and am legal now! Until I get the front filler panel, I have a brand new Texas plate filling the space. but I hate front plates on a car.
I thought changing the color of a Z was crazy. Then I saw this car. Beautiful.
I thought the same thing and almost passed when I found out it was a color change. The I saw it and thought "WOW"! As many have said, "this is the color it should have come in". I still need to verify the color, but I believe it is either Spiral gray or Cyber gray. Based on pictures only it leans to Cyber but lighting changes gray a lot in pictures.

If you pull the Cruise Control fuse, the LTPWS light on the panel will stay off. You may check to see if the fuse is installed or not. It could mean your cruise control is fine but the Low tire Pressure Warning System is not.

When I go to start the car, the LPTWS light comes on and turns off as soon as I start the car. However, a couple of other oddities:
When I turn the key to the on position, I do not see a service engine light or one for the shocks. The service engine light should at least come on when the key is turned and go off when started.
I also don't think the adjustable shocks are working. Turning the switch does nothing to the ride, and currently it feels soft and a bit floaty. The shocks look good and are not leaking. Generally if Bilstein's are not leaking and holding pressure they are good.

Thank you We Gone, I did a search to familiarize myself with the shock operation. I am very familiar with Bilstein as I have had them on other cars and we use them on a vintage off road race car which were just rebuilt by bilstein for a race next month.
I read a few threads, which helped. One problem for me is getting up to speed on OBD1, I am very used to OBDII. Will a cheap OBD1 code reader pull codes for the shocks? I need to get one anyway since my check engine light doesn't seem to work. Since he bought it from a Chevrolet dealership that didn't seem to know how to work on it, and could not get the engine to run right, I am suspecting they somehow disabled the check engine light.
BTW, love your cleaning thread! I am about to do the same as soon as these last few bugs are worked out.

there's nothing to 'read' data-stream-wise on the fx3 shocks. Even the factory scanner just ground the appropriate pin for the shock controller which will spit out the codes via the flashing light in the dash. There are only a handful of codes for the shock controller anyhow. It is useful to find out which corner you have the problem on more than anything else.
you can just do the paperclip shorting method for now without having to buy anything. I forget which terminal, but it should be well documented online somewhere (or if you have the FSM).

Bought these grounding plugs years ago when I took his class, a lot easier than the paper clip method.

Next to a FSM, these plugs are the best thing you can spend your ZR-1 $ on!

I love the paint job on it. I bought a 92 Black ZR-1 back in 09. It was a mess. I finally got it squared away to be a real good driver. Took a lot of time and money but it was worth it. Just bought a 93 Ruby Red ZR-1 last week and drove it home from Rochester, NY to Franklin, KY. Went through a cousin of Hurricane Sandy. That's when you find out what works and what doesn't. Car had been sitting all winter and this was the first real hard driving that it did. It has a few issues like the cruise control, windshield wipers, dim switch doesn't work, etc. nothing like a Z car to get you going. I still have the 92 Z and I am torn about thinking about selling it. You have a great looking car!

Thank you. the only thing easy to fix so far was the engine. 16 new fuel injectors and one coil pack it runs perfect. I have been driving it and working on it this week to see what is wrong with it.
Issues to address:
Secondary fan - is trying to destroy itself. fan is floppy, probably looking and new electric motor. What a Bit6H to get out! FSM say's remove four bolts and unplug. Looks like the radiator has to come out to change this fan.
Shocks don't adjust - Pulled left front actuator, turned key on and no movement. Car rides soft. No error light on
A/C doesn't work, been sitting a couple of years, will convert to R134, evacuate and re-fill with R134
Missing Bose Head unit - Found one but need to get back to the guy, from there will see what other audio issues exist.
Steering wheel worn - Installed new one yesterday that was very nice from the "one Last effort" thread starter.
rotational squeak in front end. May new bearings
Intake and valve covers need to be redone. Plenum was painted Yellow then black and looks like a cheap rattle can job.
No check engine light. - does not even come on when key is turned.
Full service including changing every liquid on the car.
Full cleaning and detail - to be done after the above done.
Other than all that, I may take it too a car show this evening at Norma's Café in Addison, being put on by the Chevy club.

Thanks Mark,
Just got home from its first show. Had lot of fun hanging out with all my car buddies. Funny thing was that most of the comments were, "nice paint, is it original?" I had to keep telling people the ZR-1 didn't come in that color. It is still a mess see list above, but all pretty minor really.
