I picked up a set of FX3 shocks from a fellow Z brother. I would like to go with coilover. The shocks have approx. 70k on them so I figured I should send them to get redone, correct? if so what is the process, cost? I see some have mentioned a Morroca setting in other posts. Thanks to all for any help

I sent mine in for a rebuild in the 90s. They came back kinda messed up. The Touring setting now is too harsh. It was said that an "improved" valving was used. It was not what I wanted. I wanted stock. Know what you want. Maybe you'll get it, maybe you won't.

About $125 a piece. Not sure if they are doing them at the moment somebody said they were out of parts but I cant remember whom?. Don't forget you will need to get them grooved to accept the coil overs as well. Have you thought about your front and rear spring rate yet?

Yes at 70K they are due Ricky. GC

I just sent all 4 of my original shocks in for rebuild. They could not rebuild the 2 rear shocks because they no longer have the rods and Bilstein is not going to produce anymore. The valves they may still have, but whatever stock they have left will be it. Don't think they're going to produce anymore parts (all parts produced in Germany)for the original shocks, at least that's what I got out of my conversations with them.

Forgot to mention I also have 4 of the new direct replacement Bilstein shocks. They look and function exactly the same, sans the decals. I think they redesigned the internals, so even though they won't reproduce the internal parts for the originals they should for the newer version.

I will reach out to them this week and see what my options are. GC as far as rates go I was thinking 425 front and 275 or 300 rear. Thanks to all for the info/help :proud:

dumb question but do the rods always need to be replaced during a re-valve/rebuild? hope I didn't waste my $$, I'll keep ya all updated

I bought from here http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index.cfm?mode=results&selected_model=224139&selected_year=1990
I bought the 2 rear ones first then later bought the 2 front. It's cheaper if you buy them all at once. Thought I saw they were having a spring sale on the homepage.

Depends. They won't know until they take the shock apart, but most of the time, yes they need to be replaced.

I didn't have to purchase any additional parts on my 91's rebuild, but they had less than 30k original miles on them. The shocks definitely needed a rebuild even by then...don't know if by age and oil leakage over the years or because due to the car being slammed close to the bumpstops that made the shocks ride at the end of their range that wore them out.

My spring wishlist includes getting an extra pair of front FX3's I recently obtained custom valved a little stiffer than what I currently have. Since I just drop them off at their back door, I will try to get the low-down on the rear rod availability and if they think the Germans will ever make more, I will let you know.

Thanks that would be great lmk :handshak: The shocks are in mint condition worst case I would just resell them at a good price,

$738 shipped for a brand new set is quite good.
http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index.cfm?mode=results&selected_model=224139&selected_year=1995
Latest internals and valving, factory perfect paint plus new shock warranty. I'm sure Bilstein will be discontinuing production of our FX3 type shocks at some point.

Not Always its more of an insurance policy during the revalve

Your are correct on availability Phil. They do not appear to have any Blistein's w/ FX3 for the early cars....90-92, I assme there is a difference in the shocks between early and and late models. I would say...get them while you can fellas!!

Shocks for the early years may still be available at e-shocks.com. I bought a set of 4 last month ... when I first called, they were temporarily out but received more the following week.

e-shocks (http://www.eshocks.com/bil_veh.asp?Model_Index=7Q33&Manf=All&SubChar=Q) - $770 shipped.

They are different. Amount of shaft rotation, I believe, is different.
