View Full Version : When did you buy your ZR-1

When did you buy the ZR-1 you currently own?
Does not count if you no longer own it.
If you own more than one you can make multiple selections.

Might be interesting to pole a second question. When did you first WANT to buy one??

Wanted one ever since they came out. I remember reading some car rag and the author said Lotus designed a top-end for a 350 SBC lower. I later read that was actually a consideration for a fleeting moment, but fortunately the bean counters LOST that one!

I was bitten 9 years ago in 2005 when I got my '90, and I was bitten by a bigger meaner bug in 2012 when I bought the '94.
:-D
I think they are phenomenal cars.

That's the magic phrase there Scott - means you'll get MOST responses about ones that are no longer owned.

How do I know? I tried it yesterday - "(NOW on the boards, that is...) (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22321).

All I got is a couple of 'Would be's' (would be, except for WHAT???), and color discussions. And old records in need of update...

No big deal - it's all in fun.

Oh yeah - I got the one I have NOW in '12.

Bought my 90 with 4800 miles on it in 2000. Still have it today. Promised my Son way back in 2000 when he was 14, that when I got to old to drive it he could have it. He's holding me to my promise.

Got mine, 90 #2282, in August of 08 with 3512 miles on it, 28000 now.
Vette #5, 1st one a 69 roadster in 78, a 79 and two new C4s 84 & 89 they're gone
now and the Z's the best of the lot!
I'm the 4th owner. 1st guy put 160 miles on it and traded it for a
Viper and $. 2nd owner drove it a little bit over several years. The last
guy traded it, a 2003 roadster and $ for a Will Cooksey
edition Z06 after putting about 400 miles on it. (I've been in contact
with all of them or their families) The dealer sat on it in
his showroom for quite a while, couldn't sell it and finally "fire saled" it to me.
I plan on keeping it forever and have instructed my bride not to
"give it away" when I shoot craps (hopefully no time soon...)
OBTW: my brother in CA has an identical car he bought new in 90,
I guess it's a family thing?

I bought a base 89 in 2004 and enjoyed it very much but wanted one with more go. Found the Z by accident at a consignment shop in 2007. They had a Lingenfelter there too but you could tell it was raced hard.

I saw the ZR-1 the first time in 1989 at the Geneva car show in Switzerland and falled immediately in love with.

In 1997 I bought finally my dream and still have it.

Drove three in one day April of 1997. Could not come up with the beans, so settled that day for a 1990 L 98 six speed. Put 50,000 trouble free miles on it, but always regretted not spending the extra and getting the z. So roll forward to 2012 and bought my 1990 z. Love it. All three I drove that April of 1997 were about 50,000 mile cars located in Portland OR. All 1990's one red, one green, and one white. All priced in the low 20's.

Bought 1990 #2161 in 98 from a salvage yard with 88k miles for 12.3k. It was wrecked and has a previous salvage title. Slid backwards into a retaining wall on I-65 in Birmingham. Hit on the left rear, knocked the wheel forward 2 inches, cracked the rear quarter, broke the rear glass and destroyed the bumper cover. $2500 later it was back on the road with the damage undetectable. 34k miles later and i still love the car. My kinfolk will sell it after i`m gone.

I had never even thought about owning a Vette until this one fell in my lap last April. Now that we have become active with a local club - and I with the site here - I'm glad I got it!
Long story short - a guy wanted the '71 SS Nova I had and traded me the Z for it. I talked to him last night actually - and the deal has worked well for both of us...

Been a car nut my whole life, and the C4 has always been my favorite Corvette. My brother is a 'vette fanatic and has been after me for years to pick one up, but the only one that ever tripped my trigger was the ZR-1. I just figured they were off the radar, never really looked. Then in the middle of last year I saw an ad on FerrariChat for a 722 mile car for less than 40 grand, and I thought that can't be right. A little more looking and I realized excellent cars were trading in the teens (half the OPTION price), and that blew me away. A plan was hatched.

A couple months later an opportunity to sell the M3 landed in my lap and almost at the same time, a nice ZR-1 turned up practically in my back yard. Duh. Wife wasn't happy with me but she's coming around.

Bought my 90 in June 2005 quite by accident. Was looking for a 71-73 LT-1 when this Z popped up in the local ads. I had totally forgotten about these cars and it broght back memories of reading about this super vette in all the mags. I could only dream of owning one back then, but now I had the green. The car had 65k on it and now it has over 79k. I paid 18K. Maybe a bit to much.

I did not know of this website then, and knew nothing about these cars as far as what to look for. Long story short, I bought the car and have been busy fixing all the little niggling problems that have all been thoughly discussed on this forum. The car has been completely sorted out, and the only gig is the driver's side lumbar air bladder. As soon as I can figure out how to r&r the seat back, I will repair/replace it.

I love the car!

As 'they' say..

'Back in the day'..I was a subscriber to and avid reader of the major car mags...Car and Driver, Autoweek, Hot Rod, etc. I have owned a number of fun cars..first was a '68 Chevelle 327/350hp 4 speed, followed by a '70 350 4 speed, followed by a '69 Vette, 427/390 hp 4 speed (stolen), followed by a '69 small block Vette hot-rodded to the max...when the ZR-1's were built, all I could do was dream about owning one, as the money was not there.. Four years ago, after selling some stock, I thought about buying myself a toy (mid-life crisis?)(the young girl toys were not an option)..thought long and hard about a Viper, royal blue with white stripes...then my brain recalled the original ZR's...I was amazed at the affordability of this supercar..looked around and found my '91 #1929 about three hours away..my wife and I took her SUV and picked it up on Mothers Day!, and headed home with the original sawblades mounted with the original tires in her SUV. Following a Haibeck update, the car has been absolutely trouble-free..just touched 18K miles..

Married 36 years...something has kept her around all of that time...lol

Now, back to cars....I drove it back to the Indy area, with her following at a respectful distance. On I-74 a little east of Champaign, IL, I noticed a black dot approaching as I rolled in the fast lane about 70mph with the cruise set. The black dot became a Porsche Cayman as it got close and he moved over to the right lane..and lurked there for a minute or two...I believe the driver saw the ZR-1 logo on the right rear, and decided he didn't want to be embarassed that day. He slowly passed me, hit the left turn signal, and gradually pulled away. I waited until he was about a half mile ahead, downshifted in 4th, and returned the favor. Seeing an approaching red dot, the Cayman pulled over into the right lane as the Z and I went by at somewhere around 120mph. The Cayman didn't want to play that day.. I had owned the car for maybe 45 minutes..

Another good question is, when did you buy your first Corvette ?

I will kick it off. My first Corvette was purchased in late 1954.

Cheers to all.

I was born in 1953 and purchased my first Corvette in 1970,a Red/White 1964 coupe with 250hp 327,PG trans,a/c,power windows, power brakes, and power steering. Have owned almost every year from 1955-75,with multiple cars of the same years.(really liked the Solid Axles & Mid Years) Have owned five C4's;an 85 Z51,90 ZR-1,91 ZR-1,93 40th Anniv coupe, and my present 94 ZR-1. Drove my 85 to Carlisle in 1997 and got the bug for a ZR-1 from Larry Merow and Phil DeJohn. Purchased my first ZR-1 in Kinston,NC on my 44th birthday in Nov.97.

Have had a love affair with these cars for a long time.

I still have my first vette (it's a 2008 though, so no biggie). Shortly after, a c4 was purchased as a beater so I wouldn't put mileage on the c6. I ended up liking that a lot more than I thought I would. I sold that to get my 91 zr which is my 3rd vette now.

Purchased my 92 in July of 2012 from a great couple in CT. Watched it online for almost a year and saw it for the first time in March 2012 after taking my son to UCONN. Flew to Hartford and drove it home sputtering with 7 bad injectors. Prayed all the way down the NJ Turnpike but got her home in one piece. Wazoo made it all better!

My '91 has been in the family since '93. My dad bought it in 1993 and drove it sparingly.

I learned how to drive stick on it when I turned 16, and my folks gifted the car to me when I graduated college.

It's been a great car and now has seen three generations of my family in it, as now my daughter goes for cruises with me just as I did with my dad.

I wasn't surprised by it. Most people are not the last owner of a car. The longest I have ever owned a car is about 6 years and the longest vehicle I ever owned period was a Jeep wrangler at about 8 years.

Lately I have entertained the idea of longer term ownership maybe due to my reluctance to borrow money, but most people are money ahead to not use of the entire value of a car by running it into the ground. My current strategy is multiple car ownership (which probably isn't smart), but I only have to rotate the daily driver every 3 years or so.

The story: I was at bloomington gold in the summer of "89" and spotted the GM display tent, being a corvette nut, i wondered over to see what they had in the tent. Big mistake, there sit a prototype ZR-1 with some GM engineers to answer questions about the corvette. Needless to say i spent the weekin at the tent, I had been bitten by the ZR-1 bug. When i returned home I visited my local Chevy dealer to see if he had information on the ZR-1. The owner told me he would check it out. A few days later he called and said he had information on the ZR-1. I rushed to the dealer. He said he could order one for me but I had to put a large deposit down because he would have to send a tech to school on the ZR-1 in order to order one for me. I did and he placed the order as soon as GM would accept them, that was in August( I think) 1989. Finely in December or January we received the build number of 983. The car was built in late January 1990 (I was at the plant to watch the final assembly of the car) and took delivery about 3 weeks later, the dealer wanted to leave it in his show room for a week.

I removed the plenum yesterday (6 minute plenum removal) and installing new RC injectors today. Also blocking TB coolant at injector housing and coolant return line to surge tank but you will not be able to tell from the appearance as it will appear completely stock. 1998 for me. 8500 miles at the time. I had been dreaming of one since high school when they came out. A good friend let me drive his around 1996 and I knew I had to make it happen. Two years and many hours of overtime later I was canceling the firebird formula I had ordered brand new while my ZR-1 was idling in the parking lot.

That doesn't look like South Dakota...:p
That is sunny Central Valley CA.......I follow the sun and warm weather..............drive the ZR1s year around.

Last Week.......ALL Fluids changed out (AMSOIL 10W-40, Castrol 10W-60, Mobile 1 75W-90, DOT 4)......and Differential Case Drain Installed.

This week the Standard Dynomite Top End Restoration.......
New Inj Housing, Plenum, Crank Case Vent Gaskets, TB Coolant blocked.....
New SL4-205 RC Injectors, New Coolant Hoses with rounded edge clamps, Pressure wash (hot water) under Plenum and total engine pressure wash (with everything under Plenum removed and valley drain cleaned). Starter Solenoid will be restored and Alternator polished (not painted). A Billet Aluminum Belt Tensioner Pulley was added yesterday.

Will also check all Oil Pan bolts and Water Pump bolts and possibly remove bolts and reinstall with Blue Loctite (One bolt at a time).

Notes:

1. If I had the gaskets in hand and new coolant hoses.....this complete restoration I would expect to take maybe a day with the wrenches. It is almost a must to have a high pressure washer connected directly to HOT water. The Transmission, Under the engine, front of engine, front suspension.....and particularly around the Oil Filter Adapter and below the Dipstick seem to be places where the most oil has been spilled over the years. Also have on hand a can of engine degreaser. Spray with degreaser and let it sit for a few minutes before hitting it with Hot High Pressure water.

2. On this LT5 it will appear TB coolant is intact as I plugged the rubber hose (going to Coolant Surge Tank) at the connection to Plenum and inserted 1/8 inch Allen Pipe Plug in Injector Housing. Also will retain original #40 Torx Plenum and Cam Cover Bolts. Carter Bling in Engine Compartment will be added. Original LT5 Color will be retained.....making this engine appear TOTAL STOCK.

3. New Tools These from Harbour Freight......

a. 1/4 inch drive Torx #40 hardened steel for Plenum and Cam Cover Bolts (just long enough to reach between those two tight runners on the Plenum).

b. 14 inch long combination 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch drive Flex Head Socket wrench strong enough (even using the 1/4 inch end) to remove the hardest to remove Torx Cam Cover Bolts. The 14 inch leverage eliminates the need for a cheater bar on the typical socket wrench.

That is sunny Central Valley CA.......I follow the sun and warm weather..............drive the ZR1s year around ;)

Last Week.......ALL Fluids changed out (AMSOIL 10W-40, Castrol 10W-60, Mobile 1 75W-90, DOT 4)......and Differential Case Drain Installed.

This week the Standard Dynomite Top End Restoration.......
New Inj Housing, Plenum, Crank Case Vent Gaskets, TB Coolant blocked.....
New SL4-205 RC Injectors, New Coolant Hoses with rounded edge clamps, Pressure wash (hot water) under Plenum and total engine pressure wash (with everything under Plenum removed). Starter Solenoid will be restored and Alternator polished (not painted). A Billet Aluminum Belt Tensioner Pulley was added yesterday.

Note:

On this LT5 it will appear TB coolant is intact as I plugged the rubber hose (going to Coolant Surge Tank) at the connection to Plenum and inserted 1/8 inch Allen Pipe Plug in Injector Housing. Also will retain original #40 Torx Plenum and Cam Cover Bolts. Carter Bling in Engine Compartment will be added. Original LT5 Color will be retained.....making this engine appear TOTAL STOCK ;)

Sounds great there Cliff! Total photo-doc and vid resto thread on the way huh!

Sounds great there Cliff! Total photo-doc and vid resto thread on the way huh!

I will take some shots I missed last couple times I restored a top end to get the complete set of Stock Vacuum lines and Vacuum line routing for a 90'.

And maybe some other shots if I find some new technique or way of doing things :D

But my 10 minute Plenum Removal has been confirmed (once coolant is drained as in this case without TB coolant blocked at the start) The 10 Minute Plenum Removal TIPS (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?p=176510)

So no photos of that as I was racing and if I took photos it would be a 60 minute Plenum Removal :sign10:

But what I will do is show a couple NEW tools in that 10 minute plenum removal thread for those that have stock Torx #40s for the plenum that are hard to get at and need a bit of leverage....See above Dynomite Standard ZR-1 Restoration post above :sign10:

Holy COW! That was FAST! Faster ET than my Z could do in the 1/4!

(not sayin' much tho'; I haven't gotten around to yankin' that modded gasket from my TB, so it's still a LTx ATM - I won't have enough air to fill the new OBX's and 3" PE pipes that I got from Jeff)

Looks good!

And I know I am preaching to the choir....but all three Zs I have Maintained/restored receive as a minimum this top end Restoration....and all three had oil, dirt, leaves, as well as bolts lost beneath the Plenum.....and one had old injectors under the front of the engine.

If I had the gaskets in hand and new coolant hoses.....this restoration I would expect to take maybe a day with the wrenches. Spray with degreaser and let it sit for a few minutes before hitting it with Hot High Pressure water. ;)

A DAY??? A WHOLE DAY???

I'll spend an hour cleaning bolts and the holes that they go in! SOmething about bolts going in holes, like they're on ball bearings, that I just like. Oh what a pain when the ratchet won't 'grab', and you have to sink it all the way with your fingers... NOT!

And I have to clean BEFORE breakdown too. I don't like dirty tools either. Otherwise, ya' gotta' clean THEM before re-assembly! Bolts back in empty holes, dry-fit before final assembly, every tool back in it's spot every time you put it down - surgery as far as I'm concerned...

Cleaning solvent drying cleaned parts, painted parts drying, etc., ... I don't see how you do it.

Boy, not me. I don't bother cleaning or even putting a tool back till the job is done. AND I try not to use solvent where soapy water will do. I like to avoid contact where possible with solvent because of what it does to my nervous system. (always been easily affected by skin contact with chemicals)
One exception was when I rebuilt my ZF6. Everything has to be spotless including the tools when in on those gears.

Bought 93 #47 in summer of 2013 with 7250 miles. Looked at a number of them before making purchase. This car is my retirement present to myself. Have owned three corvettes prior to this one, as well as, other muscle cars. This one is the best. Have enjoyed car immensely. She just came out of storage. She will be ready to drive tomorrow. Fun, fun, fun!

Bought my zr1 in November of 2013. It was my second attempt at buying a zr1. the first attempt I was ripped off by a dealer in ft lauderdale florida. He was selling a damaged zr1 and since I had already paid a deposit, he threatened to take me to court and drain me of every cent I ever had since he was a millionaire he could do that. This was a SGC customer who had the engine beautifully detailed but did not bother to repair the damaged engine. Aaron Scott confirmed that for me and told me of the damage. I was a victim of extortion and lost 5k in the process. My choices were not many. The dealer later sold the damaged corvette to a desert storm veteran who called me after finding some information on the net that I had posted before I made the deal with the dirty dealer to keep quiet. It is very said to see a dealer knowingly rip off a U.S. soldier and getting away with it. It took me years to think of buying another zr1. I came around in 2013 and finally have one.

I have had faster cars for sure but the permagrin is what it is. The sound, the engineering and the performance is well worth it.

I bought my Z in 2000 from the owner of a Chevrolet dealership
here in CA. His son got in too much trouble with the car. :)
The salesman didn't even know about the Valet Key. It was
interesting that (at least at this dealership) the car was just
something else to sell; numbers in a book. My Gain!

PS: Dealership closed years ago.

Had it delivered just before things started shutting down due to Covid19.
Glad I timed it that way. Had things shut down before I made the deal I probably wouldn't have it today.

If selling; God, I hope not!

If buying; God, I hope so!

Just like the stock market, the price line is always moving.
With cars:
First down.
Then stable.
Then up.

I have mastered the art of "buy high".

Your goal should be to buy during the first two parts of that cycle.
The trick is figuring out when each is happening, and how far it will move.
If you figure it out, kindly let me know.

The better strategy is buy and enjoy, whenever.

July 2017, in Wexford, PA. Had been without a Corvette for 21 years by then, and without a ZR-1 for all of my (then) 43 years! She barely made it home (found the next day that the MAP sensor hose had come off and was clogged with oil).
