Gentlemen, the course is set the hotels locked in at a guaranteed rate. All we need now are drivers that are not afraid of couple twisty turning roads.
Last year 9 members and friends embarked on the first ever mountain run just before the Bowling Green C4 gathering. This year we have the same type adventure planned if you like to drive your Z or Corvette on twisting roads.
Day 1 will consist of Diamond back, Blue Ridge Parkway and part of old miners 28.
Day two will consist of six gaps, old miners 28, Smokey mountains and tail of the dragon.
Day three will be the same as last year Devils triangle on our way to the Corvette Museum.

Here is the information for the hotels:
May 11th we will meet up at the Holiday Inn express in Blowing Rock, NC the room rate is $65.00 which is fully refundable. If you decide to pay upfront the cost is $62.93
http://tinyurl.com/n5vw7rf

May12th we will be staying at the Holiday Inn express Dillard, GA the room rate is $76.54
http://tinyurl.com/k9gkdeg

May 13th we are staying at the Candlewood suites in Alcoa, TN the room rate for a Queens is $61.95 and the two Doubles is $64.95.
http://tinyurl.com/lu4ah5l

We are trying to keep driving down to 6 hours a day.
I will have more information on hotels and routes in the next day or so.

Do either of the days include the Cherohala Skyway? If not, you're missing out on a great road. Tellico plains TN to Robinsville NC. Absolutely beautiful drive and allows for somewhat higher speeds. Ive enjoyed it in the Vette and my VTX. There are several pull-offs that provide incredible views from about 5000'ASL. http://www.cherohala.com

Gunny

We did the Cherohala last year ... as well as the Dragon 2X, Smoky Mtn Loop, and Moonshiner 28. This year we're doing different routes, but you are absolutely correct, the Cherohala is a wonderful road. Assuming the Mountain Run becomes an annual event, we will definitely do the Cherohala again.

I hope I can make it this year. The wife doesn't mind an occasional 7k run through a few gears but she is not a big fan of the twisties. I may just have her meet me in BG. We're just down the road in Nashville so might be able to make that work.

Gunny
01-25-2014, 12:53 PM
I always thought that my wife was complaining unnecessarily about the "twisties" until I realized she was actually getting "sea sick" riding through the Dragon. Later I completely understood when I let someone else drive the Dragon and I rode ... I got totally sick. Bottom line: mountain roads are great ... IF you're the driver; not so much when you ride.

On the last day of the Mountain Run we drive north from Alcoa to Oliver Springs for the Triangle, then drop back down to I-40 west ... lunch will be in Cookeville. We are scheduled to turn north at Lebanon for the final leg to BG. You could easily drive to Nashville, pick up your wife, then come up I-65 to BG, arriving not long after we get there.

I enjoy the mountain roads every chance I get, but the fun factor increases exponentially when you run the roads with a bunch of Z-owners. 'nuff said.

Hope you join us.

Did the run last year with my son and it was a fantastic experience. Gunny's knowledge of the area roads and the spirited pace he maintained as our posse point man made it even more enjoyable. So for all you guys and gals out there with ZR-1s trying to make up your minds on this mandatory bucket list thing to do while you still can - JUST DO IT !! Guarantee it'll be most fun you'll ever have in your Corvette with your clothes on.

That makes total sense. I've never heard her complain on the bike. This sounds like a good solo adventure and an opportunity to meet some new "brothers".

Dramamine... Always got me past the first day or so at sea, after being in port a few months. Should work on "The Dragon" as well, I recon!

Gunny

Paul,

Dramamine does work quite well. Another item that works (without chemicals) is the wrist band with a pressure ball. I think these are available from sporting goods, pharmacies, etc. The wrist bands were recommended to me when I took 100+ students on a cruise to the Bahamas a few years back ... I was really surprised to discover that everyone who wore the bands had zero issues with motion sickness. So this might be a good idea.

Here's a photo taken last year as we navigated the Tail of the Dragon ... 318 turns in 11 miles

As much as I enjoyed the BG gathering, I probably had more sheer FUN running the mountain roads with Robert, Ron, Phil, TomTom, Mike and the others. At my age it was really tough keeping up with them young fellers

Even though I'm retired, I can't spend every minute
lurking here on the Forum... apologies for being a few minutes late...:)
Removed my leaking clutch slave cylinder this morning, waiting
for new one to show up from Jerry. Pain in the butt to get out, but with a little
patience it's not so bad... Installation should be easier?
Better to do it now than to crap out during the trip!
New battery too, the old one was 6 years old, same thought as above.

Our tentative plan is to leave CT with Chris and Bill Hedberg on Saturday
via Rt 84 - 81 stay overnite somewhere near where Rts 81 and
70 intersect, meet up with Jeff and hopefully with some
WAZOOers on Sunday AM for the ride to Blowing Rock NC arriving
around supper time? Blowing Rock isn't in a "dry county" is it?
Actual times and places TBD.
All reservations made except for 1st nite out.

Consider the Best Western, Lee Jackson Inn, at Winchester, VA. It has a Perkins Restaurant for breakfast. If you choose this, take I-81 South to exit 313B. Once on the exit ramp, get into the left most lane (even though you'll be turning right). As you complete your right turn, there will be a traffic light at which you will turn a partial left to enter the hotel and restaurant.

Access back onto I-81 South is quick and easy. I plan to have breakfast there, but have not yet set a time.

And so it goes...

OK ... a quick "head's up" to everyone making Mountain Run 2

Everyone probably has a cell phone ... bring it, but realize that it won't work in some of the locations that we will be in.
If you have a GPS, bring that too, but, believe it or not, your GPS may get "lost" on some of the roads (all the roads are paved).
If you have a radar detector it will be handy to have along ... I personally don't leave home without my Valentine
If you have (or plan to get) an FRC radio (Walkie-Talkie), bring that, too. Walkie-Talkies are our best method of communication in the mountains. If you don't have one, let us know since some of us probably have a loaner or two. If you're planning to get one I recommend Motorola ... they've always worked best for me.

PM the following to me:

your email address
your cell phone number

I'll put an info packet together and email everyone with the final details of the Mtn Run about a week prior. I'm still fine-tuning some of the routes, etc. and watching for any road closures ... tried running part of the Blue Ridge earlier this month but the roads were closed due to weather. Hopefully we won't have any of that to deal with.

Can't imagine leaving Winchester at zero dark thirty as the ride to Blowing Rock NC is about 6 hours (?) No need to get there too early. Guessing leaving after breakfast 9ish or ? How long does it take to get to Winchester from the Philly area? Then of course, we've got to figure on what time any WAZOOers will arrive in Winchester or wherever they'd want to meet if different?

Can't imagine leaving Winchester at zero dark thirty as the ride to Blowing Rock NC is about 6 hours (?) No need to get there too early. Guessing leaving after breakfast 9ish or ? How long does it take to get to Winchester from the Philly area? Then of course, we've got to figure on what time any WAZOOers will arrive in Winchester or wherever they'd want to meet if different?

Winchester to Phila is 3 to 3.5 hours.
Would love to meet up there but I am not leaving home earlier than 7AM!

... No need to get there too early. ...

Couple of thoughts as you come down I-81

Google maps suggests I-81/I-77 then west on 421/221 to Blowing Rock.
You can also take I-81 to the Tri-Cities area (Bristol-Kingsport-JC) and choose one of the routes to Blowing Rock from there. These are pretty good roads.
If you have some time to kill you can spend some "leisurely" time on the Blue Ridge Parkway ... be forewarned, the BRP is not fast and you should definitely check for road conditions/detours/etc. We will be doing a nice section of the BRP on Monday so you will get to see some nice scenery & experience some good roads.
Check Gas Buddy before you leave ... I think you will find North Carolina to be a bit high on fuel. I usually stop at one of the exits just north of the I-81/I-77 split for best fuel prices in VA. With luck, Georgia's prices will allow some savings and also come at appropriate times when we need fuel.

I'm going to suggest Sunday night dinner around 6:30pm in Blowing Rock. It will be helpful to have a short driver's meeting for final details/questions/etc. before we start the Mtn Run on Monday. Google maps suggests 4:20 travel time for me, so I'm planning on leaving @1:30 pm, giving me time for church & taking wife & 95 year old mom out to Mother's Day lunch.

Taking a harder look at travel times and mileages maybe I'll come down Saturday and visit my brother who lives 45 min from Winchester.
Either that or I'll just meet you all in Blowing Rock.

I'd like to pull out of Winchester by 9:00/9:30 Sunday morning. Yeah I know it is only 6+ hours to Blowing Rock from Winchester but there might some interesting things to see or do along the way and then of course there's lunch. Any suggestions what's good? Gas in Virginia is usually considerably cheaper nowadays than it is in surrounding States.
Gas in Wytheville, VA (Just before entering North Carolina I-77 & I-81) yesterday was $3.19 regular & $3.49 Hi Test.

$3.76 here in CT for regular! Anything less then that is a treat!

This is the last week to order a shirt or polo before the mountain run. I am going to place the order on 4/11 so we have the shirts before the mountain run starts.

Doug, Royal Blue (XL)100% Cotton Polo.
Efenfast Black (L) Cotton Blend Polo
Rex Black (XL)100% cotton Sweatshirt.
Chedberg Black 100% Cotton Polo(2XL, XL)
Dredgeguy Plain Red Performance polo.
Jim V. (L) Cotton Blue Polo.

I don't see anything in the store regarding the above.
How do we pay for what we ordered and how do we get them?

Sunday morning, looks like the plan is to leave Winchester around 9 - 9:30?
Are we going to try to meet for breakfast before leaving, maybe at 8?
Let's get some details set! I would be happy to do so but am unfamilar with the area, need some who knows the area to set exact location of meet up and maybe breakfast.

Blowing Rock isn't in a "dry county" is it?

hard to find reliable info but it appears that BR is not "dry" ... that said, I'm not sure about Sunday sales. Guess we'll find out when we get there. On a brighter note, Rabun County, Georgia (where we'll be Monday night) is definitely not dry ... and even if it were, I happen to know where a well stocked refrigerator is located

Oil change done and she passed my inspections. Had a slight vac leak and she was making a very high pitch noise at the plenum. So I decided to pull the plenum, tightened up some vac hoses and found one of the plenum gaskets had a tear in it. All back together and running better than ever! Took her on a 60 mile run just to make sure all is good and it is! Counting the days!

Not sure about spare parts and tools, you can't bring your whole toolbox and spare parts inventory with you. Whatever you bring for spare parts, won't be what craps out... But traveling in a group is always a good thing when in a 20+ year old car. (and we've got that covered!)
An AAA card is not a bad idea either.

FWIW: I carry a scissor jack, tire plug kit (a good "gun" type w/mushroom plugs), a can of Green Slime, tire guage, wire cutters (to pull out the nail or whatever), a small 12v compressor, gloves, flashlite and a breaker bar w/deep socket (for jack and lugs). It all fits in the compartment behind the right seat. Unless I tear a hole in a tire, with this maybe I can keep going. Check the air in your spare too, even though I'd try to avoid using it if at all possible.

See ya Sunday!

Gunny

What Doug said ... plus

if you have a spare serpentine belt, it's a good idea to keep it in the compartment behind the seat.

I usually carry a small array of sockets, extensions, ratchets, wrenches, torx bits, etc. I picked up a couple of plastic tool boxes from Sears that hold most of what I need and are compact enough to carry easily ... I believe they are compact truck boxes Item # 00965117000P Model # 65117.

The nice thing about this trip is the number of knowledgeable "mechanics" available should anyone need some help.
