View Full Version : Opinions and interest in a Vegas meet?

There has been some interest in getting a meet together here in Vegas, and I wanted to start a thread here to see what interest there may be in having something in Vegas this year.
I was thinking about the following things:
--Drag Racing at The Strip. We can hook up with the Vegas Vettes on one of their drag race nights.
--Road Racing at either the ZMax track at LVMS or at Spring Mountain; wherever we could get a good price for track usage, perhaps hook up with another club that may be putting on a track day.
--Corvette show with one of the other Corvette clubs here in Vegas.
--An evening cruise on the Las Vegas Strip from end to end. (It's always fun to turn the attention of tourists from the Bellagio Fountains to the street :))
--If the "Welcome to Vegas" sign isn't too busy we can get in there for some pics. They've remodeled the area to add it's own parking lot. It's pretty busy there most times...so this would be a hit and miss kind of thing.
--EATING!!!!! We've got some good eateries here that are off the strip, and we can do some caravanning to some of them.
--There's Red Rock we can cruise through, and the Valley of Fire....anyone remember the last time we went through Valley of Fire???? 110 in a 35 zone.
Thoughts?

I'd pay a decent cover charge to hit up up Spring Mountain again.

I am not a road racer but would defiantly come if we are going to the drag strip.
You know I've been a long time advocate of making LV a western national event. Our members in the west half need to be involved in the Registry with an event that's feasible for them to attend.
BTW, I'm always good with Spring Mountain.

My son, & I were in the first two groups to use the new course last September. Word then was that section, classroom & garage is to become the CTS area & Corvette will go back to where it was, after the dealer C7 training is finished (Mar?14). The new section, 1.1 miles, 11 turns, is exciting & very fast.
Example: uphill pretty much like it looks, about 70mph & not someplace you would want to exit the track on the outside.:dancing

The one thing about Spring Mtn. is that there is a lot of room for runoff and not many opportunities to run into a wall or tire barrier (unless you lose it on the straightaway). There's some pucker factor as even the shortest sections can still have you up to 100mph, but you get used to it by the time you have half worn a set of tires and got tired of spending money on gas.

:-D It is possible to get tired of spending money on gas? I can only envy your problem with tires & fuel.

Great! I will start getting some tentative dates together based on what's going on around here and post up some possibilities.
Hey C4Fanatic...this event will require ALL wheels on the car. You think you can handle that? :)

And then of course, neither would Oklahoma for a straight shot on I40. I know a good ZR-1 friendly B&B.

I'm glad to see so many willing to support a Vegas meet. Here's where I stand right now.
I'm waiting to get some info from Spring Mountain. They are looking to put on a Corvette Track Days this year, so hopefully we can get a date for that. Going at Corvette Track Days like we did in '06 will help keep costs down for that particular track.
I've also reached out to racing operations at The Strip for drag racing. I'm hoping to have us get together with Vegas Vettes for their Drag Racing Series, but I need to see what Spring Mountain has going on, since there is interest in hitting that track. If the dates for Spring Mountain and the Vegas Vettes Drag Racing don't coincide, we'll look to have our own "class" during the ET Bracket Series at The Strip.
I hope to know more in the coming days. In my mind, once I figure out the details for Spring Mountain, the rest should fall into place.
When we get tentative dates together we can get some lodging figured out...there's a couple of hotels out here somewhere :).
Thanks.

Maybe a poll on the different dates? The >100deg days are not that much fun
Mid~late September is nice. Early enough that snow won't affect travel from the mountain regions and a separated from BG by 4 months so it's not too close together for those who can make both.

Here's an update on Vegas.
Spring Mountain is planning on holding a Corvette Track Days this year, but the catch is they don't know when. It's pretty cost prohibitive to rent the track for a day, unless we know we're going to have a really good turnout.
Drag Racing is pretty easy, cost to run would be $40.00 and we can run in conjunction with the Vegas Vette Club, or we can run in our own segment during one of the ET Bracket Series Nights. There are 12 ET Bracket races through the year, so we could fit in at anyone of them.
I know there's an interest in doing Spring Mountain; however, what kind of deal breaker would it be if we didn't do Spring Mountain?

As far as Spring Mtn goes, I want to be all in, not a ride and follow pseudo track event...I guess I'm spoiled from having track access from a former member. I would be willing to shell out a decent cover charge for the road course, but then again $40 for drag racing is kind of hard to argue against.

In your opinion, what is a decent cover charge?
For that matter, what is the amount anyone would be willing to pay to run the road course there?
All feedback here would help, so we can figure if renting the track is a doable option or not.
Thanks.

I am still interested either way, would rather run Spring Mtn, if I had a choice, getting in on Vette Track days would be best option, renting the track, sky high, paying 2,3,4 maybe 500 would be doable, most fun with your cloths on

I would say about $300 or so. I know they have a vette day there once a year and since they get a lot of entrants, I think that was in the $250 range. I'm not sure how much they got to do. Porsche Club of America has rented that track in the past, but they have to share the track with members. Maybe those guys had 40 cars or so at the event- not sure what it cost.
My experience did not include any instruction etc. Once I went there and just ran the north loop (1.1 miles) due to the school being taught on the other part of the track. Just myself that time, but there is definitely potential to damage your car by going off into the gravel or by the course getting crowded with inexperienced drivers.

Yeah, I think the last time I was at a Corvette Track Days, it was $225.00, and that was for two days.

So you need 25 entrants at $300 for access to the larger portion of the track. One might consider inviting non C4-ZR1 entrants to fill out the roster. The organizer(not the track) would also have to group people into groups of about 10 cars in slow/medium/fast run groupings in alternating 20 min sessions. I think the track provides transponders for lap times. Not sure about the printouts though, but the track marshals and staff seems to do a good job at running the safety part of it.
Not sure if it is still the same, but one might have to share the course with club members (but not the driving school).

Getting 25 ZR-1's there will be difficult, open it up to 1 of the vegas vett clubs?

Great dialogue. Exciting to say the least. We really need a West Coast event. You guys are doing great at leading the charge. As far as getting 25 ZR-1s's to commit to drag racing, that may be a hard thing to do but....it would also be great!
Opening up the drags to other Corvette Clubs may be a good means to an end for drag racing costs. Almost a West Coast Gathering of sorts.

Well, for Drag Racing, we would look to run with the local Vette club and their drag race event they have about once a month. The Drag Racing costs are only $40.00 per entrant...so that's not the pricey event.
Spring Mountain is the pricey event, and yes, we may have to open it up to the other Vette Clubs out here too. There are 3 clubs out here now. I'm sure we can get some interest from them to join in. I'll reach out to them next week and see what they've got going on and who would be willing to participate.

Your best way forward is do the research, pick a weekend, and then advertise the event with a schedule of events and cost.
I might be interested if the event was in late September or October when the weather is cooler.

Lot's of great Senic cruises close by,
Cars and Coffee has grown and would be a great place to hit if it happens this Spring before it heats up.( Sat. 7am to arond 10:00 now)
Anything pictures around Vegas sign and, early risers get around more easily for the most part.
Any weekend thru the Spring. I'm in. But probably can't do Spring Mountain. Great idea, Constantine. I'll be glad to help. Joel
